Announce Recall of Pom-poms on Precious Moments® Tender Tails® Stuffed Toys WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Enesco Corp., of Itasca, Ill., is recalling the pom- poms from about 472,000 Precious Moments® Tender Tails® stuffed toys. The pom-poms on these toys can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children. CPSC and Enesco are aware of three reports of pom-poms detaching from these stuffed toys. No injuries were reported. These stuffed toys include the Lady Bug (476080), Bee (464295), Butterfly (482234) and Reindeer (381969). The pom-poms are the antennae on the heads of the lady bug, bee and butterfly toys. The pom-poms are holiday ornaments on the antlers of the reindeer. The item number can be found on the purple adoption registration attached to the stuffed toys. The Tender Tails(r) toys are about 6 inches long. An attached label reads, in part, "TENDER TAILS®," "by ENESCO" and "MADE IN CHINA." Gift, card and collectible stores sold these stuffed toys nationwide from May 1998 through August 1999 for about $7. Consumers should immediately cut off the pom-poms from these stuffed toys. Consumers should return the pom-poms along with their name, address and phone number to Enesco to receive a free Tender Tails® Hippo toy. The Hippo toy will be retired at the end of the year and given out while supplies last. Another Tender Tails® toy will be given to consumers in exchange for returned pom-poms when the supply of Hippo toys runs out. Calvin Klein Cosmetics is aware of eight reports from consumers of the candles burning with a high flame, resulting in one minor burn injury. These candles were available in two sizes - 2.25 inches high and 1.5 inches high. The large candles were sold separately and in gift sets, while the small candles were given away as samples, gifts with purchases and included in gift sets. CPSC, Lakewood Engineering Announce Recall of Oil-Filled Electric Heaters WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Lakewood Engineering & Manufacturing Co., of Chicago, Ill., recalled about 23,000 low-profile, oil-filled electric heaters. Over time, the electric heating element in the heater could come into contact with the metal frame. This poses an electrical shock and electrocution hazard to consumers. Lakewood was not aware of any reports of electrical shock or injuries involving these heaters. Lakewood discovered this hazard from an examination of returned heaters and as a result of testing. Consumers can identify these heaters by looking for model number "7400" metal stamped with the Underwriters Laboratories certification on the rear side of the heater. Consumers should unplug the heaters before examining them. These heaters are white, about 10 inches high and 36 inches long, and "Lakewood" is written above the power control. Home supply stores, such as Service Merchandise, and catalogs sold these heaters from August 1998 through March 1999 for approximately $50. Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled heaters, disable and discard them. The firm is out of business and a remedy is no longer available.

Announce Recall to Repair Ceiling Fans WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Air Comfort Products Division of Emerson Electric Co., of St. Louis, Mo., is recalling about 20,000 ceiling fan installation kits. Over time, the bracket holding the fan can fail, causing the fan to fall or hang by its electric wires. The fans can fall at anytime, possibly causing injuries to bystanders. In addition, exposed wires could pose an electrical shock hazard. Emerson Electric is aware of 12 reports of the brackets failing, causing the fans to fall. A 13-year-old boy suffered a laceration on the nose from a falling ceiling fan. These ceiling fan kits are model CF10N1 made to use with Emerson fans. The kit is used when a fan is installed on a sloped ceiling or in a "close to the ceiling" mode. The kit only poses a hazard when installed in the "close to the ceiling" mode -- which allows the fan to be mounted higher on low ceilings. The outside housing or canopy of the kit comes in two pieces, and was sold in five colors -- brown, polished brass, antique brass, white and antique white. Lighting showrooms, electrical distributors and hardware stores sold these ceiling fan kits from December 1984 through December 1989 for about $20. Consumers should immediately check to see if their Emerson ceiling fan's housing has a two-piece canopy. Air Comfort will arrange to help consumers identify if their ceiling fans are part of this recall and provide installation if needed. Consumers should immediately stop using the ceiling fans installed with these kits and have them repaired. These cigarette lighters, which operate with push-button electronic ignition mechanisms to produce the flame, have child-resistant mechanisms that do not work. Young children could ignite the lighters. CPSC and American Hua Mao Enterprises are not aware of any injuries involving these lighters. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries. These lighters are refillable, gas fueled piezoelectric catalytic lighter and are equipped with a non-functioning child resistant feature, a lever that slides horizontally under the ignition mechanism. Once the lever under the ignition switch is moved over to allow ignition, it stays in that position until manually reset. The lighters are advertised as Windproof #L2 and #L3 models. The #L2 are two-colored, ceramic-coated metal, oval-shaped lighters with round edges. The #L3 are copper-colored and have a horse molded on the body of the lighter. Both models were sold in black leather-like cases with the model number imprinted on it. They have a stick-on-label reading "MADE IN CHINA." Small retail stores and souvenir shops in New York and Maryland sold these lighters from March 1997 through November 1998 for about $4 to $6. Consumers should immediately stop using these cigarette lighters and return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund. CPSC, Marco Alert Consumers to Gas Fireplace Recall Due to Fire Hazard WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Marco Manufacturing Inc., of Lynwood, Calif., re-emphasized the recall of more than 22,000 gas decorative fireplaces to repair their vent systems. If the interior vent pipe separates from its connection to the exterior wall of the house, hot exhaust gases can start a fire inside the wall. Marco and CPSC are aware of 22 fires involving these fireplaces. Several of these fires caused extensive damage. No injuries have been reported. The Marco gas fireplaces subject to this recall have a sealed glass-front panel and vent systems that exit the house through the side wall. The fireplaces can be identified by a six or seven digit model number starting with 794 or 797. These model numbers can be found on a label inside the unit's lower grill door. Most of the fireplaces have model designations that include the letters, "CCT." Older models have the designation "MGC36DV." The model designation can be found on the owner's manual. Gas appliance, and hearth and fireplace distributors and dealers sold these fireplaces from February 1993 through November 1997 for about $1,000, and the separate vent system for about $140. Most of these fireplaces were installed during new home construction. Marco already has repaired about 9,000 fireplace vent systems since July 1998. All other owners need to stop using these recalled fireplaces immediately. Marco will arrange for free repair of recalled fireplaces. For additional information, assistance in determining if you have a recalled fireplace or to arrange for a free repair, consumers should call Lennox, which bought out Marco, at (800) 655-2008. Earlier this year, Marco agreed to notify all consumers who have these recalled fireplaces and make the repairs. However, this alert is being issued because not all consumers have been notified by the company about the fire hazard and repairs have not been completed.

Inc., of Richmond Hill, N.Y., is recalling about 6,000 children's vampire capes and about 6,000 children's witch brooms. The capes and the brooms, which fail to meet federal mandatory standards for flammability, could ignite readily and present a serious risk of burn injuries to children. CPSC and Rubie's Costume Co. Inc. are not aware of any injuries involving these capes or brooms. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The vampire capes are made of black vinyl. The edges of the cape are scalloped. The capes are packaged in a plastic sleeve with a cardboard insert, which reads in part, "Child's Vinyl Vampire Cape...No. 50282...Made in China." The Rubies logo and a picture of a boy wearing the cape are also on the insert. The witch brooms are 27 inches long with a bamboo handle and brush made of twigs. The brooms were sold with a sticker around the handle, which reads in part, "Child's Authentic Witch Broom...Style No. 85." The Rubies logo is also on the sticker. Toy, party, costume, discount and drug stores nationwide sold the capes and brooms for about $2 each from September 1997 to October 1998. Consumers should not let their children wear the vampire capes or use the 27-inch witch brooms this Halloween. Consumers should return the products to the stores where purchased for a refund. Announce Recall of Rattles WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Michael Friedman Corp. of Brooklyn, N.Y. is recalling about 2,000 rattles. Small parts can break off of the rattles, presenting choking and aspiration hazards to infants. CPSC has received one report of a rattle separating and releasing small plastic balls from inside. No injury was reported. The recalled rattles are sold under the "Hobby Horse" brand name. The rattles, measuring 5.25 inches high, look like roses. A green stem-like handle extends from the bottom of the pink or purple "rose" and bends upon itself in a somewhat circular fashion to form a handle. The words "Hong Kong" are embossed on the lower portion of the "rose." The rattles were packaged in clear plastic shrink wrap attached to a purple polka dotted bluish cardboard header, labeled "Hobby Horse...Baby Rattle." Small children's clothing and discount stores nationwide sold the rattles from March 1997 to May 1998 for about $1 to $2. Consumers should take the rattles away from infants immediately and discard or destroy them, or if possible, return the rattles to the store where purchased for a refund. The chains on these bicycles were produced with a malfunctioning chain assembly tool. These chains can break during use, which could result in loss of control, causing the rider to fall and be injured. Specialized has received 10 reports of chains breaking. No injuries have been reported. The recalled chains were sold on the following 1998 model year Specialized bicycles: Stumpjumper M2, Stumpjumper M2 Comp, Stumpjumper M2 Pro, S-Works M2, Ground Control FSR Elite, Ground Control FSR Pro, and Ground Control FSR Limited. Specialized Bicycle-authorized dealers nationwide sold these bicycles from January 1998 through May 1998 for $500 to $3,000, depending on the model. CPSC, Oscar Mayer Announce Recall to Replace Decals on Pedal Cars Because of Lead Hazard Washington D,C - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Oscar Mayer Foods Corp., of Madison, Wis., is recalling the decals on about 16,000 Oscar Mayer Wienermobile pedal cars. These decals contain high levels of lead. High levels of lead presents a poisoning hazard to young children if ingested. Oscar Mayer is not aware of any illnesses or injuries involving this product. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of illness or injury. These hot dog-shaped pedal cars are orange and yellow, and measure about 46 inches in length. They are intended for children 3 to 7 years of age. Decals on these cars are located on the front, back, sides and interior panels of the pedal cars. Grocery stores in the U.S. and Canada distributed many of these pedal cars through special promotions and also sold a small number by mail order from June 1995 through May 1998. The cars were not available for purchase in retail stores. Consumers should immediately stop children from playing with these pedal cars. Announce Recall of Super Clean Aerosol Foam WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Castrol North America Inc. of Wayne, N.J., is recalling about 338,500 cans of Super Clean aerosol foam. The defective cans could allow the cleaner to gradually leak out through the seams. Direct contact with the cleaner could burn or irritate consumers' eyes and skin. CPSC and Castrol have not received any reports of the cans leaking. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Only the 22-ounce aerosol cans of cleaner are being recalled. The can is mostly colored purple with a plastic purple cap. The labeling on the can reads in part, "Castrol Super Clean...Solubilizes Grease on Contact...Foam Tough Task Cleaner/Degreaser." Cautionary information on the back of the can advises consumers to "Wear gloves and eye protection." Large and small retail stores nationwide, including Advance Auto, Auto Zone, Chief Auto, CSK, Kmart, Pep Boys, Strauss Discount, Wal-Mart and Western Auto, sold the cleaner from January 1997 through March 1998 for about $3. Consumers should stop using these 22-ounce aerosol cans of the cleaner. Announce Recall of Deluxe Grill Rocks WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Keanall Products Inc., of Ardmore, Tenn., is recalling approximately 4,200 packages of Deluxe Grill Rocks, used as replacement briquettes in gas grills. The rocks can break apart when heated, possibly causing pieces to be ejected from the grill, and resulting in burns to nearby consumers. Keanall Products is aware of seven incidents where these rocks fractured and pieces were ejected from the grill. One consumer sustained minor burns. The Deluxe Grill Rocks are pyramid shaped and reddish brown in color. The product is available for sale in a box containing approximately 54 pieces. The package reads, "GRILL Care gourmet series...DELUXE GRILL ROCKS...Continually cleans as you cook -- virtually maintenance free." Much of the wording on the package is in English, French and Spanish. The packages also show a photo of shrimp cooking on a grill. The Deluxe Grill Rocks being recalled were manufactured by CharmBrik & Stone Inc. in Mexico. Wal-Mart retail stores nationwide sold the Deluxe Grill Rocks between January 1998 and April 1998 for about $10. Consumers should stop using these Deluxe Grill Rocks immediately, and return them to the store where purchased for a refund, or call Keanall toll-free to return the product using the company's overnight mail account. Limit switches within these heaters can emit sparks, presenting a fire hazard. Cadet Manufacturing has received 44 reports of fires involving these heaters. Most of these reports resulted in fires that self-extinguished. However, Cadet has received two reports of fires causing considerable property damage. No injuries have been reported from these fires. CPSC has received a 45th report of two deaths from a fire involving a Cadet heater where a sofa was nearby. The cause of the ignition of the sofa remains under investigation. The heaters involved in this recall may have the Cadet or Encore brand name on the heater's grill. The heaters involved in this recall must have the following: 1) a model number beginning with FX, FW, LX or ZA followed by three numbers on a label on the front of the internal heater assembly; 2) a limit switch made of black plastic casings on the heater assembly. These casings look like small black discs and have wires attached. Only heaters with black plastic limit switches are included in the recall. Some models will have a single limit switch and others will have two limit switches. Before checking the markings on the heater assembly, consumers will need to remove the heater's grill and the screw at the top of the heater assembly. Before doing this, consumers must disconnect the power supply to the heater or fuse box. Announce Recall of Heat Detectors WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Chemetronics Caribe Inc. of Luquillo, Puerto Rico, is recalling 12,000 STARGARD AT Series dual contact heat detectors. Heat detectors monitor room temperature to provide an alarm in the event of fire. The recalled heat detectors can fail to operate properly, not detecting the presence of fire. Chemetronics Caribe has received one report that a heat detector failed to operate in a field test, but no injuries have been reported as a result of their use. The heat detectors are components of a fire detection alarm system. They are primarily a commercial product and not sold for home use. The Series 400 STARGARD AT dual contact heat detectors are round, white plastic disks about 4 1/2 inches in diameter. At the center of the device is a three-level round metal disk. "STARGARD AT" is written in small, gray type beside the metal disk, along with the company name. The recalled heat detectors have one of the following date codes stamped on their side: "0594" through "1294" "W1-Y95" through "W52-Y95" "W1-Y96" through "W52-Y96" "W1-Y97" through "W22-Y97." Distributors of fire detection equipment sold these heat detectors nationwide from May 1994 through May 1997. Consumers should stop using these heat detectors immediately and call Chemetronics Caribe at (800) 496-8383 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday for free replacement of the heat detectors and installation arrangements. Inc. of Wichita, Kan., is recalling about 20,000 camp axes. The axe handle could crack or break during use, causing the axe head to separate from the handle. Consumers could be injured if they are hit by the separated axe head or handle. The Coleman Co. Inc. has received two reports of the axe heads separating from the handles. No injuries have been reported. Only the Coleman deluxe camp axe (model 836-430T) is involved in this recall. The axe has a black plastic handle, about 13.5 inches long, and steel axe head, about 2.75 inches long. "Coleman" is imprinted on the handle. The axe comes with a black case for the blade. The axe is packaged for sale in a plastic shell with a green and red backer card that reads in part, "Coleman Deluxe Camp Axe...836-430T." Space Master Sliding Attic Ladder Recall by Werner NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT:Ken Giles JUNE 19, 1997 (301) 504-7052 Release # 97-144 CPSC, Werner Company Announce Recall to Repair Space Master Sliding Attic Ladder WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), The Werner Ladder Company in conjunction with the Kentucky Ladder Company is recalling about 400 Space Master sliding attic ladders. When in use, the ladder can slide down from the attic and then slide back up for storage. The ladder has a simple metal hook to lock the ladder in the stored position. On some ladders, the hook/lock was attached upside down, which could result in the ladder not being properly secured in the storage position. The ladder could become dislodged, slide down, and injure someone. CPSC and Werner are not aware of any injuries involving the ladders. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. All of the ladders have been marketed under the Werner "Space Master" brand and designated as Model WS2308. Major home center department stores sold the ladder nationwide from January 1997 through May 1997 for about $75.
