Multi-Use Strollers (Century) – Design Flaw (2001)

Century Recall of Multi-Use Strollers Century Products Co., of Macedonia, Ohio, is voluntarily recalling about 650,000 "Take 2," "Travel Solutions," "Pioneer," "Travelite," and "Pro Sport" 4-in-1 strollers. The strollers can unexpectedly collapse or the car seat/carrier adapter can unexpectedly detach. When this happens, an infant or young child inside the stroller or an attached car seat/carrier can fall to the ground and suffer serious injuries. Century has received 681 reports of incidents, including 250 injuries when the stroller unexpectedly collapsed or the car seat/carrier adapter detached. These reports include three concussions, two skull fractures, one fractured elbow, and two chipped teeth. The remaining injuries include bruises and cuts. The recalled strollers are for toddlers when used alone and for infants when a car seat/carrier is connected to the stroller. The model names for the recalled strollers can be found on the footrest, the seat pad, the legs of the frame or on a white label on the side locks. Consumers should stop using these strollers and call Graco, which now owns the "Century" brand name, toll- free at (800) 345-4109 anytime to order a free repair kit. Consumers should have their strollers available, as Graco will help consumers determine if they have one of the recalled models. Consumers also can log on to the company's website at www.gracobaby.com Parents should continue to use these carriers as car seats. CPSC and Graco remind caregivers to always restrain infants according to the instructions when in the car seat/carrier.

Infant Car Seats (Century) – Safety Concern (2000)

"Riding in a child safety seat on the car's rear seat for every trip is the safest way to transport young children in a motor vehicle," said NHTSA Administrator Dr. Sue Bailey. "The recall announced today is only related to using the seat as a carrier (not how the seat performs while in a car). Parents should continue using these carriers as car seats." The recall involves all Century rear-facing infant car seats/carriers with one-piece handles, manufactured from January 1991 through July 1997. The date of manufacture, written as month, day, year (010191 through 073197), can be found on a label on the side of the seat. The recalled car seats/carriers have a molded, one-piece, one-color plastic handle colored white, gray, or tan.

Century Offers Cash Reward for Recalled Infant SwingsFour strangulation deaths reported WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Century Products Co., of Macedonia, Ohio, offered a $30 cash reward for the repair of each Lil' Napper infant swing. These swings were recalled in 1997 following reports of three deaths and one near strangulation from entanglement in the swings' shoulder harness straps. CPSC and Century have since become aware of a fourth death to an 8-month old infant girl in Texas. The swings, which were manufactured by Century from 1991 through 1997, have shoulder harness straps that are placed over each shoulder and buckled between the infant's legs. If the straps on these swings loosen or are unbuckled, an infant can become tangled in the straps and strangle. Despite a nationwide effort over the past 2 years to alert the public about this recall, Century believes that many of the 125,000 swings originally sold could still be in use. Century took steps to get the word out, including direct mail notification to thrift stores and notices in new infant and convertible car seats. The recalled Lil' Napper infant swings can be identified by the following model numbers, located on the bottom of the swing's seat: 12-344, 12-345, 12-347, 12-475 or 12-476. The Century brand name is on the motor assembly at the top of the swing. Each swing has a plastic, two-position seat with a removable plastic tray. The sets are covered by either a vinyl or fabric seat pad. There are four white tubular metal legs supporting the swing. The repair program is no longer available. Parents and caregivers should immediately stop using these infant swings and discard or destroy the product. If you have one of these swings, however, Century is still offering the $30 cash reward to compensate for having to discard or destroy the product. CPSC, Century Announced Recall to Repair Fold-N-Go® Care Centers WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Century Products Co., of Macedonia, Ohio, voluntarily recalled about 50,000 Fold 'N Go Care Centers for repair. The care center's bassinet could have loose fabric, which can create a pocket near the floorboard in which an infant can become entrapped and suffocate. Century has received four reports of babies getting their head caught between the bassinet's mesh side and floorboard, including one child who reportedly required overnight hospitalization. The repair is no longer available. Consumers should destroy the product. Only Fold 'N Go Care Centers with model numbers 10-750 or 10-760 manufactured before September 1998 are being recalled. These portable, wheeled care centers include a playard, a changing table with a side storage compartment and a bassinet. Model 10-760 comes with a canopy. The model number and manufacture date are found on the tube supporting the underside of the playard. "Century" is imprinted on the side of the playard. Juvenile product stores nationwide sold these care centers from March 1998 through August 1998 for about $100 to $130. Consumers should stop using the bassinet immediately and destroy the product. These swings have shoulder harness straps that are placed over each shoulder and buckled between the child's legs. If the straps on these swings loosen or are unbuckled, a child can become tangled in the straps and strangle. CPSC and Century were aware of three deaths and one near-strangulation that occurred when children from 6 to 9 months old became entangled with the harness straps around their necks. The repair kit is no longer available. Consumers should discard or destroy the product. Lil' Napper infant swings subject to this recall are model numbers 12-344, 12-345, 12-347, 12-475, and 12-476. The model number is located on a small white sticker on the bottom of the swing seat under the foot area. Each swing has a plastic, two-position seat with a removable plastic tray. The seats are covered by either a vinyl or fabric seat pad. There are four white tubular metal legs supporting the swing. The Century brand name and swing controls are on the motor assembly at the top of the swing. Other Century swing models have different restraint systems and are not being recalled. Juvenile product, department, and discount stores nationwide sold the swings beginning in 1991 for about $90. Consumers should stop using the Lil' Napper swings immediately and discard or destroy the product. Graco, which now owns the "Century" brand name, is offering a $30.00 incentive to anyone who has one to destroy it. The incentive, and more information, is available by calling Graco (800) 345-4109.

Certain models of these strollers have restraint buckles that could unlatch and fold locks that could break causing the stroller to fold unexpectedly if the front wheels of the stroller hit a curb or other stationary object. If the restraint buckle unlatches or the fold locks fail, a child could fall out of the stroller and be injured. Century has received approximately 1,400 reports from consumers about these problems, including 78 injuries, such as bumps and bruises. The recall program is no longer available. Consumers should discard or destroy the strollers. The affected strollers are Century TraveLite SPORT strollers with model numbers 11-171, 11-181, or 11-191. These strollers were made from February 1995 through October 1995. The model number and date manufactured are located on the side tubing of the stroller. Department, juvenile products, and discount stores nationwide sold these strollers beginning in February 1995 for about $60 to $80. Consumers should immediately stop using these strollers and discard or destroy the product. The recall program is no longer available. January 29, 1992 Release # 92-046 WASHINGTON, DC -- Century Products Company, Macedonia, OH, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is voluntarily recalling its 1991 model wind-up infant swings with "Whisper-Wind" motor. Century has received 31 reports of injuries to consumers involving these swings. Most injuries were to consumers who were attempting to open the motor housing or repair swings that had stopped working. If the plastic cover over the swing motor is removed, the powerful, coiled wind-up spring will unwind rapidly and forcefully and may cause serious injury. Injuries reported to the firm include puncture wounds and lacerations requiring immediate medical treatment. The recall applies to approximately 181,000 Century Whisper-Wind infant swings manufactured during 1991. The five swing models involved were sold for about $30-80 nationwide (model numbers: 12-319, 12-329, 12-344, 12-345, and 12-349). Recalled units bear manufacturing date codes 9101 through 9112. The date codes are located on a white label on the bottom of the swing seat. The replacement program is no longer available. Century and CPSC warn consumers not to try to disassemble the swing or remove the motor housing. Consumers should discard or destroy the product. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Originally issued June 29, 1989; Revised August 27, 2001 Release # 89-062 Century Products Company Retrofitted 100,000 "Seamore The Action Seahorse" Bath Rings WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Century Products Company of Macedonia, Ohio voluntarily took action to retrofit approximately 100,000 "Seamore the Action Seahorse" Tub and Pool Toys, model 2772, because of a potential choking hazard. The push-nut and neck-pin located on the neck of the seahorse can be removed by a young child and swallowed. These bath rings were sold nationwide from March 1986 to December 1988 for approximately $25.00. While the CPSC is aware of one non-injury consumer complaint involving these small parts, Century Products Company has not received any reports of choking incidents by a child using a Seamore Bath Ring. The seahorse is a plastic infant seat shaped like a rocking horse. Rubber suction cups on the bottom of the seat secure the seat to the bath tub or wading pool. Water spouts out of the horse's mouth when the head is rocked. Consumers should check the manufacture date code to determine if their unit is one of the defective products. The date code is located on both the packing carton and the underside of the seat which can be seen through the three holes located on the bottom. The retrofit program is no longer available. Consumers with a defective product should discard or destroy the product. Date codes over 8812 indicate that improved neck-pin assemblies are in place and are not being retrofitted. Release # 88-112 WASHINGTON, D. C. --In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the New York State Attorney General's Office, Century Products Company Macedonia, Ohio were offering a redesigned replacement horn for its Century Roadster Walker. The horn is located in the center of the steering wheel and can be torn or bitten off by a child occupant. There have been eleven potential choking incidents reported, including one in which a horn piece was removed from a child's mouth to prevent his choking. Approximately 80,000 walkers with defective horns were distributed nationally. To prevent a potential choking hazard, consumers are urged to remove the horn immediately from the steering wheel by grasping the horn with pliers and pulling the horn out. Owners should check the date of manufacture on the carton and on a sticker located underneath the "fender." Walkers manufactured after January 1, 1989 come equipped with the redesigned horn and do not need to be replaced. The replacement horn is no longer available. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Originally issued December 1983; Revised August 27, 2001 Release # 83-063 CPSC and Century Products Announced Repair Program Washington, D.C. --In cooperation with the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Century Products, Inc., of Stow, Ohio, today announced a voluntary repair program involving two models of its super coupe baby walkers. The models involved are No. 8209 and 8210, which were produced between September, 1982 and November, 1982. The Super Coupe Walker contains an adjustment for the seat height which allows the walker to be set at 20 different height settings. When the height setting is adjusted in the low to middle ranges and if force in excess of 20 pounds is applied to the walker, the possibility exists for the walker to collapse. The collapse could result in the infant falling to the floor and the pinching or laceration of the infant's fingers when the unit folds up. The Commission is aware of at least six instances of walker collapse resulting in two lacerations. Century Products, Inc., upon learning of the potential for collapse, notified all retailers and made available to them a repair kit to be placed upon the units before their sale. All affected units in the possession of retailers at the beginning of 1983 were to have undergone repair by the retailer. Century is now advising consumers to check the underside of the walker's plastic tray to see if stickers containing the model number 8209 or 8210 still appear. If so, this may be an indication that the repair was not made. Units containing any other model number are not affected. The repair kit is no longer available. Consumers owning Super Coupe Models 8209 and 8210 should discard or destroy the product. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Originally issued August 22, 1977; Revised August 27, 2001 Release # 77-092 High Chair Recall WASHINGTON, D.C. (AUG. 22) -- Century Products Inc. and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) today announced a voluntary recall of Century's non-folding 747 Command high chair. According to the Commission's staff, this chair could break at the weld which joins the metal support column with a metal seat support plate. If this should occur, the chair seat and any young child in the seat could fall to the floor. The recall involves only the non-folding 747 Command high chair in which the metal pedestal column is welded to a metal support plate fastened to the bottom of a plastic seat and involves no other chair manufactured by Century. The non-folding 747 high chair can be identified by numbers found on the back of the plastic seat. Only units bearing these numbers, 7403 through 7412, 7501 and 7502, are affected. Approximately 600 of these chairs were produced between March 1, 1974, and February 28, 1975, and distributed in Alabama, California, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, ad Pennsylvania. The retail price of the units was approximately $24.95. Consumers who have one of these high chairs should stop using it and discard or destroy the product.
