Heaters and Humidifiers Recalled by Honeywell NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 8, 1998 Release # 98-091 Company Phone Number: (800) 632-9498 CPSC Consumer Hotline: (800) 638-2772 CPSC Media Contact: Yolanda Fultz-Morris, (301) 504-7066 CPSC, Honeywell Announce Recall of Heaters and Humidifiers WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Honeywell Consumer Products, of Southborough, Mass., is recalling about 1.6 million heaters sold under the Duracraft brand name, about 8,000 heaters sold under the DeLonghi brand name and 150,000 humidifiers sold under the Duracraft and Honeywell brand names in the United States and Canada. The heaters and humidifiers can overheat, presenting a fire hazard. Honeywell has received 56 reports of heaters overheating or catching fire, causing one minor injury, and six reports of humidifiers overheating or catching fire. Some of the fires relating to these heaters and humidifiers caused extensive damage. Only Duracraft model CZ-303, CZ-304, CZ-308, CZ-318, CZ-319 Heat Express and DeLonghi model CER-1 portable electric ceramic heaters are involved in this recall. The model number is located on a silver sticker on the bottom of the heater. The heater is 1500 watts and is colored black. Control knobs are located on the top or front of the unit. "Heat Express " and "Duracraft " or "DeLonghi" appear on the front of the unit. Only Duracraft model DH-950 Moisture SelectTM humidifiers and Honeywell model HCW-3040 Moisture SelectTM humidifiers are involved in this recall. The model number is located on the bottom of the humidifier. The humidifier is colored white and has a clear water tank that holds about two gallons. Control knobs and two output vents (one for cold moisture and one for warm moisture) are located on top of the unit. "Duracraft" or "Honeywell" appears between the two output vents on top of the unit. Retail outlets including discount stores, home centers, club stores and catalogue showrooms nationwide sold the Duracraft heaters from January 1989 through March 1998 for about $50 to $75. The DeLonghi heaters were sold from January 1989 through December 1990. Similar retail outlets nationwide sold the Duracraft and Honeywell humidifiers from May 1995 through March 1998 for about $50 to $80. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled heaters and humidifiers and call Honeywell at (800) 632-9498 anytime for instructions on returning their product for a free replacement. The humidifiers can overheat, posing a fire hazard. Duracraft has received approximately 85 reports of these humidifiers overheating and catching on fire or producing smoke. There are no confirmed reports of injuries or deaths, but there have been reports of minor and major property damage. Duracraft model DH-901 through DH-904 humidifiers with date codes that fall within the range of 900101 to 941231 and all model DH-3001 through DH-3006 humidifiers are involved in this recall. The model number and, if applicable, date code are located on a sticker on the bottom of each humidifier's base. These humidifiers have a rectangular shape. Each humidifier includes a rectangular water tank ranging in size from 1 to 4 gallons. The tank is located next to the mist chamber which has an attached control panel. "Duracraft" is written on the front of the unit. Major retail stores nationwide sold the humidifiers from January 1991 through June 1996 for about $40 to $80. Consumers should stop using these humidifiers immediately and call Duracraft toll-free at (800) 290-8495 anytime to receive a free replacement part to repair the model DH-901 through DH-904 humidifiers or to receive a replacement unit for model DH-3001 through DH-3006 humidifiers. Portable Baseboard Heaters Recall by Duracraft NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Ken Giles August 27, 1997 (301) 504-7052 Release # 97-177 CPSC, Duracraft Announce Recall of Portable Baseboard Heaters WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Duracraft Corp. of Southborough, Mass., is recalling about 50,000 portable baseboard heaters. The fan of the model CZ-520 heater could become stuck causing it to overheat, posing a fire hazard. Duracraft has received 20 reports of these units overheating, producing smoke or causing fire, and resulting in minor property damage. Duracraft is not aware of any injuries involving the heater. The model CZ-520 Space SaverTM Baseboard Heater's exterior housing is constructed of white thermoplastic and a black steel grill, and has two heating control knobs on the right side -- a power switch and a regulating thermostat. The electric heater measures 22 inches long, 6 inches wide and 4¼ inches high, and tilts to various angles on its hinged stand. The word "Duracraft" is written in gray on the top, right side of the unit. The model number, CZ-520, is located under the words "Made in China" on a silver sticker on the bottom of the heater. This model heater was manufactured in 1995. Only date codes that begin with "95" are involved in this recall. The date code can be found on a small white sticker on the bottom of the heater with "DATE" written on it. Major department stores and home centers sold the heaters nationwide from September 1995 through March 1996 for about $60. Consumers should stop using these heaters immediately, even if it seems to be functioning properly. April 28, 1992 Release # 92-077 PRODUCT: Duracraft Corporation's 16" brass-plated fans, model numbers DP-161, DP-1601 and DP-1602 manufactured before February 1991. The affected models can be identified by the stamped date-of-manufacture code at the bottom of the fan base. The first two digits of the code represent the month, the last two, the year. PROBLEM: Fans' blades may fracture and fly from the fan grill, possibly striking someone nearby. Additionally, grill clips may not adequately hold fan grills together. WHAT TO DO: Call Duracraft at 508-490-7000 for a free modification kit containing replacement blades, stronger grill clips and installation instructions. DISCONTINUE USE UNTIL FAN HAS BEEN MODIFIED. WASHINGTON, DC -- Duracraft Corporation, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced the voluntary modification of its Duracraft models DP-161, DP-1601 and DP-1602, fans manufactured before February 1991. Some of these 16" fans have blades that may fracture while in use possibly striking someone nearby. In addition, the grill retaining clips sold with the fans may not hold the fan grills together. Duracraft reports 47 instances involving fan blade parts escaping from the grill. The suggested retail prices of these fans were $40.00 (DP-161) and $60.00 (DP-1601 and DP-1602). Only brass and platinum plated 16" fans, model numbers DP-161, DP-1601 and DP-1602, are involved in this product modification. No fans made after January 1991 are involved. To determine the model number and the date of manufacture, check the stamped date-of-manufacture code on the product label on the bottom of the fan base. The first two digits of the code represent the month. The next two digits represent the year.Owners of affected fans who call Duracraft's number, 508-490-7000, will receive free modification kits consisting of replacement fan clips and blades and installation instructions. Notice of this modification program is being mailed to Duracraft customers who have sent in warranty cards for these fans.Owners of these fans should not use them until they have received their modification kits. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is announcing this modification program as part of its mission to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury and death associated with consumer products. The Commission's objective is to reduce the estimated 28.5 million injuries and 21,600 deaths associated each year with the 15,000 different types of consumer products under CPSC's jurisdiction
