WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation, of Armonk, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling about 220,000 AC adapters that are used with certain models of IBM notebook computers and other mobile devices. These AC adapters can overheat, posing a fire hazard. IBM has received nine reports of the AC adapters overheating, including one report of fire causing minor damage. There have been no reports of injuries. The recall includes AC adapters used only with IBM ThinkPad 310 (type 2600 only) and IBM ThinkPad i Series (type 2611 only) notebook computers, and IBM WorkPad z50 (type 2608 only) companion devices. The AC adapter is a small rectangular black plastic box that, on one end, has a permanently attached wire that connects to the computer, and on the other end has a detachable cord that plugs into an AC outlet. It is approximately 2.5 inches long by 4.5 inches wide by 1.25 inches high. The label reads in part, "AC Adapter," "Made in China" and "Delta Electronics (Dougguan) Co., Ltd." It has a FRU p/n number of 12J0537, 12J0539 or 02K6562. Electronic and computer stores nationwide, and the IBM web site and other on-line retailers sold these AC adapters with mobile devices from May 1997 through November 1999. They also were sold separately for about $50. Consumers should contact IBM to receive a free replacement AC adapter. Consumers also will receive a 15 percent discount coupon for Options by IBM merchandise when the recalled AC adapter is returned. September 22, 1995 Release # 95-171 WASHINGTON, D.C. - CPSC, the IBM Personal Computer Company of Somers, N.Y. is announcing a program to repair 56,000 color computer monitors. Some of the monitors may have been incorrectly assembled and, if not properly grounded, may pose a shock hazard.The 17-inch color computer monitors have a 15.4-inch viewable image size. They have been sold directly by IBM, and by authorized IBM resellers for approximately $1000 - $3000 since September 28, 1993. The involved monitors have model numbers 9527-001, 9527-011, 9527-T01, 9527-T21, 9527-005 and 9527-015 located inside the front pull-down panel, or on the information label on the rear of the monitor.IBM, which reported this matter to the CPSC, has not received any reports of electrical shock. Owners of IBM 9527 series color monitors in the United States should call IBM at (800)426-7378 to schedule a no-charge repair. January 20, 1995 Release # 95-065 WASHINGTON, D.C. - CPSC, IBM PC Company of Somers, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling 32,000 AC adapters supplied with the Thinkpad laptop computer in the United States. The AC adapter has an internal fault that can pose an electrical shock hazard. The Thinkpad computer is not involved in the recall.The recalled AC adapters included with Thinkpad models 360CS, 755C, 755CE, and 755CD were sold nationwide after Oct. 1, 1994. Only adapters marked with both Model AA19210 (found on the black portion of the label at the bottom of the unit) and DATE: 9452 or a lower number such as 9451, 9450...(found on the white strip of the label) have the fault.IBM, which reported the possible hazard to CPSC, has not received any reports of injury from the adapters. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury.Owners of the Thinkpad computer who have questions about the recall or need help in identifying whether their adapter is part of the recall should call IBM at (800) 426-7378 anytime.
