Announce Recall of MARTHA STEWART EVERYDAY® Brand Tea Kettles WASHINGTON, D.C.- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Kmart Corp., of Troy, Mich., is recalling about 24,000 MARTHA STEWART EVERYDAY® brand tea kettles. Boiling water can be expelled from the kettle's spout, presenting a burn hazard to consumers. Kmart has received 14 reports of boiling water being expelled, resulting in three minor burn injuries. The recalled tea kettles were sold under the MARTHA STEWART EVERYDAY brand name, and are stainless steel or white, sage, or slate colored porcelain. The words, "MSE Thailand" are printed on the knob attached to the lid of the kettle. Kmart sold the tea kettles nationwide from October 2000 through March 2001 for about $25 to $30. Consumers should stop using these tea kettles immediately and return them to any Kmart store for a refund. Consumers can also call Wilton Industries Inc. toll-free at (800) 273-9398 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, to receive a refund or a replacement tea kettle.

The mask's glass lens can break into sharp pieces, causing lacerations to a child's face, eyes or hands. Kmart has received one report of the glass lens shattering. No injuries have been reported. The "Splash Club" Aquatic Child's Swim Mask is made of either purple, aqua or lime-green plastic. It has a clear glass lens and an adjustable head strap. "Tempered Splash Club Glass" is written on the mask. The mask is packaged in clear plastic with a cardboard insert labeled "Splash Club Aquatic Child's Swim Mask." The following UPC code is on the package: 072000 72970 0. The mask was made in China. Kmart and Super Kmart stores nationwide sold the swim masks from February 2000 to July 2000 for about $3. CPSC, Appliance Co. of America LLC Announce Recall of Juice Extractors Sold at Kmart WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Appliance Co. of American LLC, of Great Neck, N.Y., voluntarily recalled about 229,000 Betty Crocker juice extractors. The juice extractor's filter and lid can break apart, and project metal and plastic into the air, causing injuries to nearby consumers. Appliance Co. of America had received 17 reports of the juice extractors' filters and lids breaking apart. Six consumers suffered minor cuts to their hands and arms. The Betty Crocker juice extractor being recalled is model number 1480, which is written underneath the unit as part of a mark that reads "BC-1480 Juice Extractor." The juice extractor is white, and measures 12.5-inches high, 6-inches wide and 8.75-inches long. Kmart stores nationwide sold these juice extractors from September 1992 through June 1995 for about $21. Consumers should stop using these juice extractors immediately, and discard or destory them. The firm is out of business and cannot be contacted, and a remedy is no longer available.

Announce Recall of Portable Heaters WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Holmes Products Corp., of Milford, Mass., is recalling about 45,000 heaters. The thermostats in some of these heaters are improperly positioned, which can cause them to overheat, posing a fire hazard. Holmes Products has received 11 reports of these units overheating and catching fire. Six of these incidents resulted in minor property damage. No injuries have been reported. These "Wide-Angle," portable heaters, manufactured in 1998, are approximately 12 inches high, and are in the shape of a half-circle. The front is white, and the back is gray. The units have two knobs on the top. The date code, which includes the number 98, is located on the back, right-hand corner of the units just above the box containing the Underwriter's Laboratories (UL) logo. Other writing inside the UL box includes, "MODEL: HFH-297" and "MADE IN CHINA." "Holmes(r)" also is written in the UL box and on the front of the unit. Mass merchandise stores, such as Kmart and Target, sold these heaters from September 1998 through July 1999 for about $27. The fabric used in making these ornaments is flammable, posing a fire hazard. CPSC is aware of two incidents where plastic on these angel ornaments melted from the heat of the bulbs. These tree-top angel ornaments are about 10 inches high, have gowns that are white, gold, silver or a combination of these colors, and have lights attached to each wrist and at its base. The seat of these pool toys can tear, causing small children to unexpectedly fall into the water and possibly drown. Kmart has received four reports of the boat's seats tearing and causing children to fall into the water. No injuries have been reported. The Deluxe Inflatable Kiddie Boats are vinyl and consist of an orange inflatable circular tube with blue handles and a seat in the middle. The boats also have an inflatable, clear plastic barbell with various colored balls inside attached to the front of the boat. Writing on the boat includes, "KIDDIE BOAT . . INTRODUCES YOUR CHILD TO WATER . . . SPLASH CLUB," and has a picture of a dolphin jumping through a hoop. CPSC, Hedstrom Announce Recall of Glide Rides WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Hedstrom Corp. of Bedford, Pa., recalled about 1.5 million Glide Rides, sold with backyard gym sets, for in-home repair. The Glide Ride's "J-bolt" assembly can break, causing children to fall or drop to the ground and be injured. Hedstrom had received 17 reports of children falling or dropping to the ground when the "J-bolt" broke, resulting in scrapes, bumps, bruises and one reported bone fracture. Hedstrom backyard gym sets with Glide Rides involved in this recall were manufactured from November 1992 through October 1996 and involve over 220 models. The model number and manufacture date are located on the Glide Ride's top bar. Both wooden and metal gym sets are involved. The Glide Ride is a two-person passenger ride, commonly referred to as a teeter totter. The Glide Ride measures about 38 inches from seat to seat and 56 inches from the bracket on the top bar to the foot rest. Department, toy and discount stores nationwide, including J.C. Penney, Toys R Us, Kmart and Wal-Mart, sold Hedstrom gym sets with the Glide Ride from April 1993 through December 1997 for about $150. The Glide Ride also has been sold separately for about $45. Consumers should stop using and discard or destroy this product immediately. The firm is out of business and the remedy is no longer available.

CPSC, Kmart Announce Recall to Repair Patio Rocking Chairs WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Kmart Corp. of Troy, Mich., is announcing a recall to inspect and repair about 148,000 wrought-iron patio rocking chairs sold under the brand name "Gables." If assembled improperly, the rocking chairs can collapse, causing its occupant to fall. Kmart is aware of 84 reports of the rocking chairs collapsing, resulting in 80 injuries. One injury involved a cut to the head requiring three stitches. The remaining injuries included several reports of back pain and numerous reports of bruises. All but one of the incidents occurred when consumers sat on a display model of the chair in a Kmart store. The "Gables" wrought-iron rocking chairs have a green textured finish, and are sold as part of a five-piece patio set that includes a 54-inch oval table and four high-back chairs with spring-rocker function. The Kmart item number is 21-34-59 and the UPC code for the patio set is 018866001024. These numbers can be located on hang tags found on the set when sold and customer receipts. Kmart stores nationwide sold these rocking chairs from September 1996 through August 1997. The five- piece set sold for about $250. Consumers should check the positions of the rocking chairs' four bolts, located under the seats, to determine if their chairs have been assembled properly: The bolts located toward the back of the chair should fit all the way in the drilled hole. The bolt located toward the front part of the chair, closest to the rocker coil, should stick out about 1/16 inch. Be certain to check that all four bolts on the chair are tight. If consumers are not satisfied after inspecting their chairs, they can return the entire five-piece set to their nearest Kmart location for a refund. The chairs can unexpectedly collapse and injure consumers. Kmart has received 10 reports of these chairs collapsing. Six reports involve finger tip amputations and crushed fingers when consumers' fingers were caught in the folding arm of the chairs as they collapsed. Two reports involve reports of back pain when consumers fell to the floor. The chairs consist of a white metal frame with a seat made of a striped vinyl fabric. The striped seat is available in the following colors: royal blue/white, navy blue/white, orange/lime, lime/orange and hunter green/white. The arm rests of these chairs are colored to match the seats. The chairs measure about 34 inches high and 22 inches wide. A white label on the back of the chairs reads, "MADE IN CHINA." The chairs had a cardboard hang tag labeled, "SLING GARDEN CHAIR...KMART" Kmart stores nationwide sold these chairs from February 1997 through September 1997 for about $13. The glass in the masks can break into sharp pieces and cut divers. Kmart has received seven reports of masks' glass breaking, resulting in one diver's hand being cut. The Healthways Ocean Side dive mask is made of fluorescent yellow, marine blue or raspberry plastic and clear tempered glass. The mask was part of a dive set that included a snorkel and fins. The words "Healthways Ocean Side...Tempered" are printed on the front of the mask. The dive set is packaged in a blue, yellow and white cardboard box labeled in part, "Barbados Healthways Ocean Side...4-Piece Dive Set...Made in China for Kmart." The dive set is visible through a plastic window on the front of the box. Recall Infant Boys' Rompers WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Wear Me Apparel Corp. of New York, N.Y., is recalling about 30,000 Little MiraclesTM rompers for infant boys. The paint on the rompers' cap snaps presents a potential lead poisoning hazard to young children. The paint on the cap snaps violates the ban on paint containing lead under the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Act. Wear Me Apparel Corp. and CPSC are not aware of any injuries involving these garments. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Little MiraclesTM rompers involved in this recall have style numbers 9448 or 9449 on the reverse side of the care label. These romper styles have three orange or red snaps at the neckline. The rompers are 100 percent cotton with short sleeves and a snap crotch. Both styles are available in five sizes: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-9 months, 12 months, and 18 months. The rompers have two sewn-in labels in the neck. One label identifies the Little MiraclesTM brand, and the other label displays RN 46795 and provides information on the garment's size, fiber content, and care. Kmart stores nationwide sold the rompers beginning in October 1996 for $4.44. Consumers should return the rompers to any Kmart store for a full refund. The paint on the rompers' buttons is dangerous for young children because it contains an excessive level of lead. Because of the excessive lead levels, the rompers violate the Consumer Product Safety Act. Kmart initiated the recall in response to a consumer's concerns about paint chipping from the buttons after washing the rompers. Kmart and CPSC are not aware of any injuries involving the garments. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The short sleeve, crew-neck rompers, which come in white with pink flowers or white with blue flowers, were available in three sizes: 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months. Three shiny plastic buttons on the front of the garments each measure approximately .5 inch in diameter. Sewn-in tags in the neck of the rompers read in part, "YOUNG CLASSICS (TM) 60% COTTON 40% POLYESTER RN # 42000 BANGLADESH." The style number 1832 appears on the rompers' hang tags. Kmart stores sold the rompers nationwide for $6.99 from January 1996 through April 1996 under the Young Classics label in the Kidsworld department. Consumers should return the rompers to any Kmart store for a full refund. Chifferobe (Kmart) – potential safety concern (1996)

January 16, 1996 Release # 96-059 WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), two furniture manufacturers are warning consumers that some of their children's bedroom furniture may pose a serious tipover hazard. Ridgewood Inc. of Ontario, Canada, and Charleswood Inc. of Wright City, Mo., sold approximately 585,000 chifferobes (combination dresser/wardrobes) and approximately 309,000 four-drawer dressers under the brand name "Cosco Youth Options." These chifferobes and dressers may become unstable and tip over if heavy objects are placed in the top drawers, several drawers are open at the same time, or a child climbs on the unit. Consumers are urged to remove the feet/glides to greatly reduce the risk of tipover. If the furniture tips over, it could fall on a child, causing serious injury such as fractures, internal injuries, or suffocation. Ridgewood and Charleswood have received reports of one chifferobe tipover and 11 dresser tipover incidents. The chifferobe incident and two of the dresser tipovers allegedly involved serious injuries to children.This warning involves Ridgewood and Charleswood Chifferobe Model Numbers 80813 and 88813; and Four-Drawer Dresser Model Numbers 80413 and 88413. The furniture may have been marketed and sold under the name, "Cosco Youth Options." The white laminated chifferobe, measuring approximately 51 inches high, 46 inches long, and 16 inches deep, consists of a closet along the left side of the unit, and two shelves and three drawers on the right side of the unit. The white laminated four-drawer dresser measures 38 inches high, 30 inches long, and 16 inches deep. Both units are sold with rounded, black, plastic feet/glides, measuring 1.5 inches high, which can be attached to the bottom of the furniture. Leading department stores and juvenile furniture stores, including Wal-Mart and Kmart, sold the furniture nationwide since 1991. The chifferobe costs approximately $89 to $109, and the four-drawer dresser costs approximately $79 to $89. The outfits were sold in two shades of blue with white and have airplane apppliques on the sweater and short sleeved top. The outfits were sold nationwide during January and February 1994. PROBLEM: The snap fasteners on the front of the cardigan sweaters and collars of the short sleeved tops may detach from the garments creating a choking hazard for infants. WHAT TO DO: Discontinue use immediately and return the outfit to the nearest Kmart for a full refund. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- CPSC, The Kmart Corporation, Troy, MI, is voluntarily recalling approximately 6,500 boys' infant 3- piece outfits consisting of a blue and white cotton/polyester cardigan sweater, short sleeved top, and checked pants. The snap fasteners on the front of the cardigan sweater and collar of the short sleeved top may detach from the garments creating a choking hazard for an infant. The outfits sold for $12.99 in Kmart stores nationwide during January and February 1994. The outfits can be identified by the hangtag, located underneath the left arm of the garments when sold, stating in part "Dept. 2116, M4311, Style 2129, Item 4200." The outfits were sold in two shades of blue with white and have airplane appliques on the sweater and short sleeved top. Consumers who purchased these outfits should discontinue their use immediately and return them to the nearest Kmart store for a full refund. CPSC learned of this problem when Kmart reported to the Commission that it had discovered 155 garments at various distribution centers with detached snap fasteners. There have been no reports of injuries. CPSC is announcing this recall as a part of its mission to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury and death associated with consumer products. The Commission's objective is to reduce the estimated 28.6 million injuries and 21,700 deaths associated each year with the 15,000 different types of consumer products under CPSC's jurisdiction

JANUARY 13, 1993 Release # 93-031 PRODUCT: "Islander" children's sandals by Melville Corporation. The sandals have balloons fastened to the vamp of the sandals. PROBLEM: The balloons may come off, presenting a choking hazard to children. WHAT TO DO: Consumers should return the sandals to the place of purchase for a full refund. WASHINGTON, DC -- CPSC, Melville Corporation of Rye, NY, announces the voluntary recall of its "Islander" children's sandals. The sandals can be easily identified by the balloons that are fastened to the vamp of the sandals. The balloons on the sandals may come off. Because the sandals are intended for use by young children, the balloons, if detached, present a choking hazard. To date, the CPSC and Melville are aware of two incidents involving the sandals. Neither involved an injury. These shoes were sold throughout the United States in Kmart department stores and Pay Less Drugs stores between February and September of 1992. The sandals sold for $3.99 a pair. Consumers who purchased the sandals are asked to return them to the place of purchase for a refund. July 15, 1991 Release # 91-094 Pacifier Recall WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Luv n' Care Ltd. of Monroe, LA, is voluntarily recalling 620,512 pacifiers because they failed to meet CPSC's mandatory safety requirements for pacifiers. These failures included nipples coming off when tested by CPSC, and the lack of the required warning statement, "Warning-Do Not Tie Pacifier Around Child's Neck as it Presents a Strangulation Danger" on the packaging's main panel. Pacifiers affected by this recall include model numbers: G24, P8, P24, P20, P20/2, P21, P22, P25, P26, P27, P42, P43, P45, P46, P47, and P52. On the outside surface of the pacifier shields are the words "Luv n' Care." Balloons, animal characters, or trains may also be printed on the pacifier shields. These pacifiers have a small unmoveable loop on the end instead of a handle. Some models come with a hard plastic protective cover. Pacifiers with a large moveable loop handle are not being recalled except for the P8 pacifier which has a round white shield that has no printed decorations on it. These pacifiers were sold nationwide from January 1990 to April 1991 and sold for between $.79 and $2.00 each. They were sold in retail chains, discount stores, catalog outlets, and toy stores where infant items were sold, including Eckerd Drugs, J.C. Penney and K-mart stores. The pacifiers were made and distributed by Luv n' Care. Consumers are urged to take the pacifiers away from babies and young children immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund of the purchase price. Consumers with questions about this recall may contact the Consumer Relations Department, Luv n' Care at (318) 388-4916. CPSC learned about these potentially hazardous pacifiers through consumer complaints received by the agency. May 22, 1991 Release # 91-074 Kmart Recalling Gift Gallery Potpourri Burner Washington, DC -- Kmart, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is voluntarily recalling an estimated 18,000 Gift Gallery Potpourri Burners, Item #20-00-21, which sold for $5.97 at Kmart stores from September 1990 through February 1991. The tealight candle, which is sold with the Gift Gallery Potpourri Burner, burns too hot and may pose a risk of fire. The firm reports one incident where the tealight of the product was difficult to extinguish. No property damage or injury was reported. Consumers should return the Gift Gallery Potpourri Burner to any Kmart store for a full refund. This product was available in one color: cream with strawberries on a vine. Recalls Model #1615 Mountain Jr. Bicycles WASHINGTON, D.C.--Ming Ta Supply U.S.A., Santa Clarita, California is voluntarily recalling its 16-inch Mountain Jr. Bicycle, Model #1615, imported from Taiwan. The 16-inch sidewalk bicycle, which was sold by K mart stores throughout the country in March and April 1989, is not equipped with a chain guard to prevent a child's clothing from getting caught in the moving chain, the seat post is too long for a sidewalk bicycle, the handlebar stem is painted over making the minimum insertion marks unclear, and the bicycle is not provided with safety or operation instructions. These problems present a significant risk of injury to young children. A total of 11,000 Mountain Jr. Bicycles were imported by Ming Ta Supply, U.S.A., and only 7,900 of them were distributed to K mart Corporation stores throughout the United States. K mart sold approximately 1,200 of these bicycles in March and April of 1989. Bicycles sold after June, 1989 have been reconditioned. Although no injuries have been reported to the importer, K mart, or to the Commission due to these defects, the recall is being undertaken as a precautionary measure. Consumers who have these bicycles should bring them to any K mart retail store for reconditioning as a sidewalk bicycle. The store personnel will add a chain guard, replace the handlebar stem and seat post, and provide a set of safety and operating instructions without cost to the consumer. The 16-inch Mountain Jr. bicycles equipped with chain guards have been modified and are not subject to the recall.
