Announce Recall of Ceiling Exhaust Fan and Light Units WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), NuTone Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio, is recalling more than 500,000 Ceiling Exhaust Fan and Light units. The light socket in these units could be wired incorrectly, which presents an electrical shock hazard when replacing the light bulb. Consumers can continue to use the fan and light units, but should not attempt to change the light bulb or examine the units, unless the power has been turned off at the circuit breaker. CPSC and NuTone are not aware of any injuries involving these fan and light units. This recall is being conducted to prevent shock-related injuries. This recall involves the NuTone models 663LN, 663LNMP, 663LNB, 669L, 669LB, VF305C and VF307C Ceiling Exhaust Fan and Light units, which are wired to remote wall switches. When installed, the white grill of the fan/light units protrudes from the ceiling in a shallow "V" shape. The grill measures 12 1/4 inches long by 10 3/4 inches wide. It has a white light lens at its center with air intake vents on each side. The NuTone name and model number are not visible on the grill, but are listed on the installation instructions and on the cardboard packaging. Consumers with units matching this description should call NuTone at (888) 336-6151 anytime. NuTone will provide additional guidance to help consumers determine if their unit is involved in this recall. A free repair kit with installation instructions will be sent to consumers with recalled fan and light units. Various national chain and independent hardware stores sold the units nationwide from June 1996 through July 1997 for about $60 to $75. The units also were installed in newly constructed homes during this time period. Other models of NuTone fans with larger grills or fluorescent lights are not involved in this recall.

March 20, 1996 Release # 96-083 WASHINGTON, D.C.- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), NuTone Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio, is announcing a recall to repair more than 25,000 "NuTone" brand ST-1000 Stereo-Cassette Players. Components in the power supply board may overheat, causing smoke damage or fire.NuTone is aware of at least 16 incidents that resulted in property damage, ranging from melted cassette players to damage to the house itself. NuTone is not aware of any injuries involving this stereo. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury.The radios, measuring 14.5 inches long by 9.25 inches high, can be mounted flush against the wall and wired to remote speakers throughout the home. The stereos come in two colors, white and walnut. The words "NuTone" and "Model ST-1000" appear on the front of the radio to the left of the radio dial. The cassette deck is located at the lower right corner. The cassette players also feature volume, balance, tone and input selector dials on the front. Various retail stores and electrical distributors sold the stereos nationwide from January 1990 to December 1995. The stereo-cassette players were also installed in newly constructed homes during the same time period. Model ST-1000D (walnut) and Model ST-1000WH (white) sold for approximately $200. Model ST-1000PKD (walnut) and Model ST- 1000PKWH (white) sold for $246 as part of a set that also included two speakers, wire, an antenna, and a transformer.Consumers who have a Model ST-1000 Stereo-Cassette Player should stop using it and call NuTone at (888) 336-6151. Nutone will provide consumers with the name of a local service organization that will send a representative to the consumer's home to inspect and, if necessary, fix the radio free of charge

Decorator Paddle Fans (NuTone) – Socket Bracket Issue (1992)

March 5, 1992 Release # 92-059 WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), NuTone, Inc. of Cincinnati, OH, is announcing a voluntary corrective action plan to replace the die cast socket hangers on approximately 310,000 "NuTone" brand paddle fans. The paddle fans involved have a ball and die cast socket ceiling-mounted device. In some cases the die cast mounting bracket may crack, allowing the fan to fall. The fans were manufactured from the Spring of 1983 through the Fall of 1984. They may include the Verandah, Hacienda, Sea Island, Decorator, and Slimline model 36" and 52" fans. The paddle fans sold nationwide through NuTone Electrical Distributors. The CPSC was informed of these potentially unsafe fans by NuTone, Inc., which discovered the problem after receiving a broken socket hanger from a NuTone service station. NuTone reported five incidents of the die cast socket hanger breaking. No injuries were reported. Consumers with the paddle fans are urged to discontinue use. Consumers should not attempt to disconnect or dismantle the fans themselves. NuTone will replace the die cast socket with a sheet metal bracket, free of charge. This bracket will insure that the fan will not fall. Consumers in the continental United States with NuTone paddle fans installed prior to 1986 should call 1-513-527-5100 to receive a safety notice providing instructions and information on the identification and correction of the affected paddle fans. Consumers can also write: NuTone, Madison and Red Bank Roads, Cincinnati, OH 45227, Attention: Paddle Fans. Consumers should specify their name, address and telephone number plus the words "Paddle Fan Corrective Action" in the letter. NuTone will provide a safety notice instruction and the name of a local service organization which will install the replacement bracket free of charge. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is announcing this repair program as part of its mission to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury and death associated with consumer products. The Commission's objective is to reduce the estimated 28.5 million injuries and 21,600 deaths associated each year with the 15,000 different types of consumer products under CPSC's jurisdiction

NuTone Paddle Fans Corrective Plan NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 21, 1984 Release # 84-052 Voluntary Corrective Action Plan For Paddle Fans Washington, D.C. -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, NuTone of Cincinnati, Ohio today announced a voluntary corrective action plan for approximately 250,000 "NuTone" brand fans manufactured since May, 1983. The Company has received reports of several incidents of fans falling, including 4 incidents involving personal injury. The paddle fans involved have a ball and socket ceiling mounting device. Under certain conditions, the ball may pull through the socket allowing the fan to fall. Only those NuTone paddle fans manufactured and sold after May 1, 1983, are involved in the corrective action plan. MuTone fans can be identified by the name "NuTone" stamped on each of the 4 blade irons which connect the fan blades to the paddle fan. The plan calls for the addition of a retaining ring which will be installed free of charge to all installations containing ball and socket mounting device made on or after May 1, 1983. This ring will prevent the ball from pulling through the socket and will help insure that the fan will not fall. Consumers in the continental United States with NuTone Paddle Fans installed on or after May 1, 1983, should call l-800-543-8687; consumers in Ohio should call l-800-582-2030. All others should write NuTone, Madison and Red Banks Road, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45227, Attention: Paddle Fans. Give name, address and telephone number plus a simple statement "Paddle Fan Inspection Desired". NuTone will arrange for a service representative to inspect the fan and install the retaining ring. The paddle fans were sold nationwide between May 1983 and July 1984, through NuTone electrical distributors. Information concerning this corrective action plan is also available to consumers by calling CPSC's toll-free Hotline at 800-638-CPSC.
