Wooden Beads & Tops Recalled NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Ken Giles December 17, 1996 (301) 504-7052 Release # 97-042 Wooden Toys Recalled Because of Lead Paint WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Oriental Trading Company of Omaha, Neb., is voluntarily recalling approximately 44,400 wooden toys because some of the paint on the toys contains high levels of lead. CPSC standards ban toys containing high levels of lead. Young children might swallow lead if they chewed on these toys. Although no reports of illness or injury have been received, this recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of lead poisoning. Two types of wooden toys are involved in this recall. One toy is a set of 32 wooden beads with a cord for stringing the beads, packaged in a clear plastic bag labeled (in part): "OTC Item No. M-027/653 QTY: 1PC MADE IN CHINA." The other toy is a set of six spinning tops, packaged in a clear plastic bag labeled (in part): "OTC ITEM NO: M-027/294 QTY: 1 SET MADE IN CHINA." These two toys were sold from September 1994 to November 1996 through the firm's catalogs for under $4 and through retail stores. Consumers who purchased these wooden toys from toy stores should return them for a full refund or full credit. Consumers who purchased the toys through Oriental Trading's catalog should call the company at (800) 228-0045 to obtain refund instructions.

Pumpkin Erasers (Oriental Trading) – choking hazard (1994)

October 31, 1994 Release # 95-018 Washington, D.C. - Today on Halloween, CPSC is warning consumers that Halloween pumpkin erasers resembling candy pose a choking hazard for young children. The erasers, imported by Oriental Trading Company of Omaha, Neb., do not meet CPSC's small parts regulations under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. CPSC issued this warning when Oriental Trading refused to join the agency in a voluntary recall of the erasers. The Halloween Toy Eraser Assortment, model number 9/260, consists of 60 assorted erasers in the shapes of black bats, white ghosts, and orange pumpkins with green stems, which sold for $4.50 in the 1994 Oriental Trading Company Halloween catalog. The assortments are packaged in clear plastic cylindrical containers with a sticker on the lids that read, "Item No. 9/260, Q'TY :1 TUBE(60 PCS), MADE IN TAIWAN." Underneath the container's lid is a cardboard Halloween night scene with the words "Eraser Fun" printed below a haunted house. While CPSC asked Oriental Trading to stop sale on all of the erasers, the pumpkin erasers, which measure 3/4 inch long and 3/8 inch thick, pose the greatest choking risk for children under 3 years of age. CPSC urges consumers, who may find any of these erasers in their children's bags as Halloween treats, to take them away from young children immediately. Parents and caregivers should be careful not to let younger siblings play with toys that are only appropriate for older siblings

AUGUST 27, 1993 Release # 93-100 PRODUCT: Five toys/children's jewelry items distributed by Oriental Trading Company, Inc. The items include plastic toy maracas, item #16/008; plastic toy baby bottles, item #16/16; plastic heart-shaped stetchable bracelets; plastic stretchable charm bracelets; and beaded charm necklaces. PROBLEM: During CPSC testing, small parts detached from each of these toys and jewelry items, presenting a choking hazard to young children. WHAT TO DO: Consumers are urged immediately take the recalled products away from young children and return them to the stores where purchased for a full refund. WASHINGTON, DC -- CPSC, Oriental Trading Company, Inc., Omaha, NE is voluntarily recalling the following five children's items because they all present choking hazards. - Item #16/8, 7-inch plastic toy maracas, 240,000 were sold between December 1989 and July 1992. The maracas were sold two to a package in a clear, plastic bag with a cardboard header labeled, in part "Rock 'N Roll CHA CHA." - Item #16/16, plastic toy baby bottles, 216,000 were sold between June 1985 and July 1992. The bottles were sold three to a package. Each package was labeled in part "*** Bottles with Real Rubber Nipples - Made in Hong Kong***." - Item #24/329, 4-inch heart-shaped stretchable toy bracelets, 42,000 were sold between September 1989 and July 1992. Each bracelet consists of 12 various colored hearts strung together on a elastic cord. The bracelets were sold 12 to a package and were sold in a clear, plastic bag with an affixed adhesive label reading, in part "***Made in China***." - Item #24/394, 15-inch plastic beaded charm necklaces, 39,600 were sold between May 1991 and July 1992. Each necklace consists of a beaded strand with 10 various colored shaped hearts, stars, and other similar items attached. The necklaces were sold 12 to a package and were sold in a clear, plastic bag with an affixed adhesive label reading, in part "***Made in China***." - Item #24/395, 6-inch stretchable charm toy bracelets, 42,000 were sold between June 1991 and July 1992. Each bracelet consists of a beaded strand with various shaped objects, such as hearts, attached. The charm bracelets were sold 12 to a package and were sold in a clear, plastic bag with an affixed adhesive label reading in part "***Made in China***." Neither CPSC nor Oriental Trading Company, Inc. is aware of any injuries involving these products; this recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. During CPSC testing, small parts detached from each of these toys presenting a potential choking hazard to young children. These toys were found during an inspection of the firm by CPSC. The recalled toys were sold in toy stores, discount stores, and various other retail stores nationwide and ranged in price from 20 to 80 cents each. Consumers are urged immediately take the recalled items away from young children and return them to the stores where purchased for a full refund. April 18, 1990 Release # 90-076 Oriental Trading Company, Inc. Recalls Two Wooden Trains Because Of Choking Hazard WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Oriental Trading Company, Inc. of Omaha, Nebraska is voluntarily recalling two models of wooden trains because of small parts which could detach and become a choking hazard to young children. When the CPSC tested the wooden trains in accordance with regulations under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, wooden pegs, wheel axles, smoke stacks and the alphabet man's head came off or separated. Neither the CPSC nor the company is aware of any injuries involving this product. This voluntary recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The trains were sold by mail order catalog and by retailers from December 1988 to the present. The trains are described as follows:TRAIN ALPHABETIC SPELLING (ITEM #WP 257 27/58) consists of an engine with a pull cord and three cars. Each car has a flat bed with letters of the alphabet painted on rectangular wooden men and are attached by wooden pegs. Approximately 2,200 units were distributed nationwide for $3.95 each. GOODS TRAIN (ITEM #27/46) consists of a multi-colored engine and three multi-colored cars with red wooden wheels. Each car carries various wooden items, including a hopper car and a tank car. A pull cord is attached with a wooden bead on the end. Approximately 3,500 units were distributed nationwide for $5.40 each.Consumers are urged to take these toys away from young children immediately. Consumers owning either the Goods Train or the Alphabetic Spelling Train should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers who purchased either wooden train from Oriental by direct mail catalog may return them to the company at 4206 South 108th Street, Omaha, NE 68137 for a refund plus postage. Nebraska Importer Recalls "Funny Clown" Dressing DolL NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: November 21, 1989 (301) 504-7908 Release # 90-011 Nebraska Importer Recalls "Funny Clown" Dressing Doll WASHINGTON---Brightly colored toy clown dolls, marketed as the "Dress Up Clown," are being recalled by Oriental Trading Company, Inc. of Omaha, Nebraska because they contain small parts that present a choking risk to young children. The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The clown dolls, although marketed as the "Dress Up Clown," came in a package labeled "Funny Clown." They were sold by mail order catalogue and by retailers nationwide for $3.00 each between December 1988 and the present. Clothed primarily in red, blue and yellow, this doll has yellow string hair, a clown's cap and is about 13 inches long. It also has a snap, a button, a zipper, a buckle and shoe laces intended to introduce young children to various dressing functions. The clown doll may be identified by a cloth tag sewn onto the doll's cap that says: "Oriental Trading Co., Inc." When the Commission tested the clown dolls in accordance with the regulations under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, zipper clasps, buttons and buckles came off the dolls. The Commission alleges that these small parts make the dolls banned hazardous substances because they present a choking, ingestion and aspiration hazard to children. Consumers owning the Funny Clown dress up dolls should return the dolls to the place of purchase for a full refund. August 4, 1988 Release # 88-062 Rainbow Kids Dolls Recalled By Importer WASHINGTON, DC - Oriental Trading Company of Omaha, Neb., is voluntarily recalling its Sweetheart Rainbow Kids dolls because the arms and shoes can come off and present a choking hazard to young children. Neither the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission nor the Oriental Trading Company is aware of any reports of injuries involving the doll. The dolls, which are 5 1/2 inches tall, have rosy cheeks with freckles, striped caps, simple clothes and white plastic shoes. "Made in Hong Kong" is stamped on the doll's back. Some 45,000 dolls were sold nationwide between February 1986 and March 1988.Consumers should immediately take the dolls away from young children and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
