Announce Recall of Bungee Baby Bouncer WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), E and I Inc., of Bancroft, Idaho, is recalling about 4,000 Bungee Baby Bouncers. The device allows a baby to bounce while supported in a harness or "belly band" by an elastic "bungee cord," suspended from a doorway. Knots tied in the black rope that supports the bouncer can unravel, causing the baby to fall. CPSC and E and I Inc. have received six reports of knots failing. In four of these incidents, babies bumped their heads from falls. The Bungee Baby Bouncer includes a purple harness, a clamp that attaches to the doorway frame, two wooden dowels measuring 15.5 inches and 3.875 inches long, a rope and a purple elastic bungee cord. "E and I's BUNGEE BABY BOUNCER" is written on the harness, and "BUNGEE BABY BOUNCER" is written on the doorway clamp. The product's safety precautions advise the bouncer is to be used for babies approximately 4 months old to walking age, and for babies not heavier than 25 pounds. Chelsea and Scott's One Step Ahead catalogs, and baby specialty retailers in Utah and Idaho sold the bouncers from September 1998 through March 1999 for between $35 and $40. Consumers should immediately stop using their Bungee Baby Bouncer, and return only the bungee assembly to E and I Inc. for a free repair. Consumers will be reimbursed postage charges. Consumers can send their bungee assembly to: E and I Inc., P.O. Box 66, Bancroft ID 83217-0066. For more information, consumers should call E and I Inc. at (800) 853-6001 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. MDT Monday through Friday. The metal hook that attaches to the doorway clamp can break, however, a safety cable prevents the bouncer from falling. The company also is replacing these metal hooks as part of this repair.
Bicycle Cranks Recalled by Shimano NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Ken Giles July 1, 1997 (301) 504-7052 Release # 97-149 CPSC, Shimano Announce Recall of Bicycle Components WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Shimano American Corp. of Irvine, Calif., is voluntarily recalling more than 1 million cranks installed on bicycles in North America. The crank is used to connect the pedal to the frame of the bike. If the crank breaks, the rider's leg can be injured by contact with the broken crank or the rider can lose control of the bike, fall and be injured. Shimano has received more than 630 reports of cranks breaking in North America resulting in 22 injuries, including cuts and fractures. The cranks have been installed on more than 200 models of bicycles manufactured since 1994 and sold under at least 49 brand names. Most bicycle manufacturers have sold bicycles that are involved in this recall. The cranks also may have been installed as an upgrade as part of the Altus, Acera and Alivio groups of components. The cranks are numbered FC-CT90, FC-M290 and FC-MC12. These numbers are located on the back or inner side of the right crank arm. Consumers should check their bicycles' crank assemblies. If they are involved in this recall, consumers should stop using their bicycles immediately and call Shimano at 800-353-4719 to arrange for the free replacement and installation of a new crank assembly at a nearby authorized repair shop. Consumers can also arrange for the free replacement with their bicycle dealers. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Media Relations Originally issued March 13, 1996; Revised July 9, 2001 (301) 504-7908 Release # 96-080 CPSC, Scott Usa Announce Recall Of "Unishock" Suspension Forks WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission, Scott USA Inc. of Boulder Colo., is voluntarily recalling approximately 13,600 "Unishock" suspension forks. The forks may crack or separate, causing a rider to lose control of the bicycle and fall. Scott USA has received 640 reports of incidents of these model forks cracking or separating, eight of which resulted in injuries. The injuries reported have included two concussions, two separated shoulders, one laceration, and three abrasion injuries, or "road rashes." The forks have the "SCOTT" logo on the side of each fork leg. A sticker on the front of each leg reads, "UNISHOCK" with the designation "S", "LF", "VR", "TX" or "R." Bicycle stores sold the forks nationwide as original equipment on the following 1993 and 1994 models of Scott USA bicycles: Ultimate CST, Team Racing, Comp Racing, and Unitrack ST. The following 1994 models are also included in this recall: Ultimate CST, Team Racing, Comp Racing, Unitrack ST, Unitrack CC, and Unitrack FSR. Approximately 350 Scott bicycle dealers sold about 5,600 bicycles with the forks nationwide from August 1992 to June 1995 for between $669 and $2,495, depending on the model. During the same period, 1,450 bicycle stores also sold approximately 8,000 forks nationwide as after-market equipment for about $200 to $400, depending on the model. Only forks with the designations listed above are involved in this recall. Forks with white legs bearing the name "UNISHOCKS" are not part of this recall. Consumers who own recalled suspension forks should stop using them immediately. They should bring bicycles with recalled forks, even if the forks were purchased as aftermarket equipment, to any authorized Scott bicycle dealer. Each defective fork will be replaced free with a new, comparable suspension fork. For more information, consumers should call (800) 292-5874.
