Tiger Industries Inc., of Mesa, Ariz., is recalling about 1,800 go-karts for repair. The go-karts have exposed live rear axles, and riders can be seriously injured or killed if their long hair or clothing becomes entangled in the rotating rear axle.

Some of the paint on this furniture contains lead, which is toxic if ingested by children. High levels of lead in paint violate the Consumer Product Safety Act. CPSC and PJ Toys are not aware of any illnesses or injuries involving this furniture. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of illness or injury. The recalled furniture was decorated in either a circus or princess theme. Item numbers can be found on the original packaging. The toy chest's lid support can fail, allowing the lid to fall onto a child's head or neck. A child could become entrapped at the neck and strangle. CPSC and Crate & Barrel have received two reports of lids falling. In one instance, a lid fell onto a woman's head, causing her chin to strike the front edge of the chest. Through their retail stores, Crate & Barrel has received about 116 consumer requests for replacement lid supports. The Crate & Barrel toy chests also function as benches. The seat of the bench, which is the toy chest's lid, lifts up to store toys inside. The toy chests, measuring 29 inches long, 18 inches wide and 18 inches deep, are made of maple, birch or beech wood. A 2-inch high railing encompasses the sides and the back of the chest, along with spindle-type rails on the sides. These toy chests have either one or two metal lid supports. Crate & Barrel stores and catalogues sold the toy chests nationwide from September 1994 through March 1998 for about $130. Consumers should immediately stop young children from using the toy chests, and call Crate & Barrel at (800) 352-0688 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CDT Monday through Friday. Crate & Barrel will provide a new lid support, free of charge, to stop the lid from falling to prevent a child from being injured or fatally trapped. The balls in this toy are less than 1.75 inches in diameter, which poses a choking hazard to young children. CPSC and Laiko International Inc. are not aware of any injuries involving this toy. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. This wooden toy consists of a red, yellow and blue wooden frame with plastic inserts lining the four holes in the top. A wooden hammer and four solid-colored wooden balls are included. The balls are red, green, yellow and blue. They are designed to be hammered through the holes in the top of the toy, and then roll down a ramp to the front of the toy. The cardboard box packaging includes writing in several languages. The English writing states in part, "WOODEN TOY KNOCK-A-BALL *** ITEM NO.785 *** MADE IN CHINA *** NON-TOXIC." Toy stores and other small retail stores nationwide sold these wooden toys from August 1997 to June 1998 for about $10. Consumers should take these toys away from young children immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. The handles of these rattles could present a serious choking hazard to infants and young children. Because of the rattle handles' shape, they could block a child's airway if inserted in the throat. CPSC and STK International Inc. are not aware of any injuries involving this rattle. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The rattles are called "Turning Ball with Whistle," and are designed to be an infant toy. They are made of multi-colored plastic with a handle connected to a ring holding a rotating segmented ball. This ball contains a clear plastic ball holding two small metal balls. The handle is made up of large colored beads and has a whistle on the tip. The rattle is packaged in a clear plastic bag with a cardboard hang tag reading, "TURNING BALL WITH WHISTLE *** NO. BI-194 *** MADE IN CHINA ***." Discount dollar stores nationwide sold the recalled rattle from December 1997 through May 1998 for about $1. Consumers should take these toys away from young children immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. Announce Recall of Butane Gas Lighters WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Rite Aid Corp., of Camp Hill, Pa., is recalling about 225,000 multi-purpose, refillable, butane gas lighters. These lighters have on/off switches that could be defective, allowing them to be ignited in the off position, and can stay lit after the ignition switch is released, possibly causing burns and unintentional fires. CPSC and Rite Aid are not aware of any injuries involving these butane lighters. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The recalled butane lighter, item number 4731589-V111, is approximately 11 inches long, has a black plastic base with red plastic trim and a metal igniter shaft. Writing on the lighter's side reads, "MADE IN CHINA." A red sticker on the lighter reads, "SUPER." The item number is written on the bottom of the packaging's cardboard backing. Rite Aid stores nationwide sold the lighters from March 1998 to May 1998 for about $2. Consumers with a recalled lighter should stop using it immediately and return it to any Rite Aid store for a full refund. Under normal scuba diving conditions, the hoses on these BCDs can separate from the jacket, and possibly cause drowning. Durapro systems is aware of three reports of these low-pressure inflator hoses separating from these BCDs. No injuries have been reported. These recalled Durapro Systems BCDs are the Cirrus, Stratus, Aruba, Slimline and Resort. The low-pressure hoses on the BCDs, part number 302, connects the first stage regulator to the BCD power inflator valve. These hoses are identified with the following markings: "PLIOVIC MULTI PURPOSE 1/4" 1/D (6.4 mm) 250 PSI WP (1.7 MPA)...MADE IN USA...GOODYEAR." Retail dive stores and a mail-order catalogue sold these BCDs from January 1996 through May 1998 for about $179 to $359. Consumers who purchased one of thesea Durapro Systems BCDs should stop using it immediately. The hose from the BCD should be returned to the dive store where purchased for a free replacement hose. Announce Recall of Power Strip Surge Protectors WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Electronic Resources Ltd. of San Diego, Calif., is recalling about 5,000 power strip surge protectors. The power strips have undersized and loose wires and poor grounding, presenting fire, shock and electrocution hazards to consumers. CPSC and Electronic Resources Ltd. are not aware of any injuries involving these power strips. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. There are two models of power strips being recalled: model PW-101 and model PW-102. Model PW-101 has six outlets and Model PW-102 has four outlets. There is no labeling on the power strips, but they are 6 feet long and they are made of a light tan metal with black outlets and power cords. The power strips were sold in green cardboard boxes with black lettering that reads in part, "ER...POWER STRIP...MODEL...6FT POWER CORD...HECHO EN CHINA." A picture of the power strip appears on the box. Small electronic parts stores in Arizona, California, Texas and Washington sold the power strips from May 1993 through March 1998 for about $4. Consumers should stop using the recalled power strips immediately. To receive a refund, consumers should return the power strips to the store where purchased or to the company. Announce Recall of Super Clean Aerosol Foam WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Castrol North America Inc. of Wayne, N.J., is recalling about 338,500 cans of Super Clean aerosol foam. The defective cans could allow the cleaner to gradually leak out through the seams. Direct contact with the cleaner could burn or irritate consumers' eyes and skin. CPSC and Castrol have not received any reports of the cans leaking. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Only the 22-ounce aerosol cans of cleaner are being recalled. The can is mostly colored purple with a plastic purple cap. The labeling on the can reads in part, "Castrol Super Clean...Solubilizes Grease on Contact...Foam Tough Task Cleaner/Degreaser." Cautionary information on the back of the can advises consumers to "Wear gloves and eye protection." Large and small retail stores nationwide, including Advance Auto, Auto Zone, Chief Auto, CSK, Kmart, Pep Boys, Strauss Discount, Wal-Mart and Western Auto, sold the cleaner from January 1997 through March 1998 for about $3. Consumers should stop using these 22-ounce aerosol cans of the cleaner. These boilers' gas control valves, made by White-Rodgers, could have gas pressure settings that are too high. Incorrect gas pressure can cause the boiler to produce dangerous carbon monoxide, which can then leak, causing serious injury or death. Weil-McLain has received three reports of carbon monoxide detectors alarming due to the release of carbon monoxide from these boilers. No injuries or deaths have been reported. The Weil-McLain model GV gas boilers subject to this recall are equipped with certain White-Rodgers model 36C98-303 gas control valves with date codes 9621 through 9723. The date code and model number can be found on the unit's gas control valve, which is located at the front and center section of the boiler under the jacket. Also, all Weil-McLain GV boilers located at elevations more than 7,000 feet above sea level are being recalled. These boilers have "WEIL-McLAIN GOLD GV" written on the boiler jacket. Heating and cooling companies and contractors sold these boilers nationwide from June 1996 to November 1997 for about $1,500 to $3,000. Approximately 1,000 GV boilers were installed from June 1990 to January 1998 at locations above 7,000 feet elevation. Consumers should immediately check to see if they have a Weil-McLain GV boiler affected by this recall. For assistance in checking the boiler's gas valve model and date code, or for other additional information, consumers should call Weil-McLain at (219) 879-6561. If a consumer has an affected boiler, Weil-McLain will arrange for a free adjustment of the gas control valves' pressure setting.

Announce Recall of Deluxe Grill Rocks WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Keanall Products Inc., of Ardmore, Tenn., is recalling approximately 4,200 packages of Deluxe Grill Rocks, used as replacement briquettes in gas grills. The rocks can break apart when heated, possibly causing pieces to be ejected from the grill, and resulting in burns to nearby consumers. Keanall Products is aware of seven incidents where these rocks fractured and pieces were ejected from the grill. One consumer sustained minor burns. The Deluxe Grill Rocks are pyramid shaped and reddish brown in color. The product is available for sale in a box containing approximately 54 pieces. The package reads, "GRILL Care gourmet series...DELUXE GRILL ROCKS...Continually cleans as you cook -- virtually maintenance free." Much of the wording on the package is in English, French and Spanish. The packages also show a photo of shrimp cooking on a grill. The Deluxe Grill Rocks being recalled were manufactured by CharmBrik & Stone Inc. in Mexico. Wal-Mart retail stores nationwide sold the Deluxe Grill Rocks between January 1998 and April 1998 for about $10. Consumers should stop using these Deluxe Grill Rocks immediately, and return them to the store where purchased for a refund, or call Keanall toll-free to return the product using the company's overnight mail account. Inc. of City of Industry, Calif., is recalling about 840,000 Elite-2 disposable cigarette lighters. The lighters do not meet the 1994 requirement for child-resistant mechanisms in violation of the Consumer Product Safety Act. This act requires amechanism on disposable and novelty lighters shown to prevent ignition of the lighters by most children under 5 years old. Each year, CPSC estimates 190 deaths are caused by children under 5 years old playing with lighters. CPSC and ERA Intermarketing are not aware of any injuries involving these cigarette lighters. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The Elite-2 lighters are made of clear plastic tinted in assorted colors. The metal top is labeled "ELITE," and the lighter label bears the bar code: "16229 12001" and the date code, "3/97." Small retailers sold the Elite-2 cigarette lighters nationwide from June 1997 to March 1998 for about $1. Announce Recall of Soldering Guns WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), American Presto Corp. of Ontario, Calif., is recalling about 720 soldering guns sold under the Wisdom brand name. The plastic handle can melt during use, exposing consumers to electrocution, shock and burn injury hazards. CPSC has received one report of a soldering gun's handle melting. No injuries have been reported. The soldering gun is pistol-shaped, and made of red plastic with a metal barrel. The item is labeled, "SOLDERING GUN 110V 60 HZ 35W." A black power cord is attached to the bottom of the soldering gun. The soldering gun was packaged in a plastic shell, with a hang tag labeled in part, "SOLDERING IRON...PISTOL TYPE...MANUFACTURED IN CHINA FOR WISDOM TOOLS." Northern Hydraulic Co. stores in Minnesota, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Iowa, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, Wisconsin and Virginia sold the soldering guns from February 1997 through January 1998 for about $4. Announce Recall of Climbing Harness WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Misty Mountain Threadworks Inc. of Banner Elk, N.C., is recalling about 5,000 climbing harnesses with a front entry sleeve system. If attached incorrectly, the climber's swami belt can be held by only a small piece of elastic behind the sleeve. Climbers who don't realize this mistake create a dangerous situation where the belay/rappel loop tears through the elastic webbing, potentially causing the climber to flip backwards, possibly causing injury. Misty Mountain Threadworks is aware of at least three incidents where climbers have ripped the elastic webbing, but there have been no injuries reported. The frames can crack and separate, causing a rider to lose control of the bicycle, fall and be injured. GT Bicycles has received about 17 reports of frames cracking, resulting in 2 injuries involving cuts and bruises. The recalled bicycle frames came equipped on bicycles or were sold separately as part of a frame kit. 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998 XL and XXL model GT Speed Series, Speed Series Team and Speed Series Cruiser frames and bicycles are included in this recall. 1997 and 1998 model Robinson Pro, Pro XL, Pro 24 and Amtrac frames and bicycles also are included in this recall. These model names are found on the frame. GT Authorized Dealers nationwide sold these bicycles and frames from November 1994 through February 1998. The frame kits cost about $300 to $450 and the bicycles cost about $600 to $1,450. The clacker balls hanging from the center of the toy present a choking hazard to young children. CPSC and The First Years have received 2 reports of children getting one of the clacker balls stuck in the throat and blocking the airway. Nearby adults were able to pull the balls free and prevent the children from choking. The First Years is offering a free repair kit, consisting of easily installed permanent covers for the ball-shaped ends of the clacker toy. The covers will prevent the toy from entering a child's throat. The First Years High Chair Gym is an activity toy consisting of a metal wire frame about 7 inches high and 10.5 inches wide. It attaches to a high chair tray by two large red suction cups. Several brightly colored plastic toys hang from the wire frame. Two 1-inch diameter plastic clacker balls, one black and one white, are suspended from the center of the frame by rigid plastic arms about 3.5 inches long. A yellow plastic spinning toy on one end of the frame has "the first years" molded in one end with a sun on the opposite end. During use, the wings of these flying dolls can break off, and possibly cause serious eye injuries to consumers. CPSC and Rite Aid have received one report of a doll's wing breaking off during use,resulting in a laceration above the eye of a nearby child. The Cyber Fighter doll, measuring about 5 1/2 inches tall, is made of plastic, and has black pants, silver arms, a helmet with black goggles, gold boots and a yellow lightning bolt on a red vest. Its arms are strapped onto black wings with red tips, which are outstretched from the doll's body. The doll can be attached to a blue plastic launcher with gold trim by a stand under its feet. The words, "CHAP MEI CHINA" are printed on the launcher. The Flying Angel doll, measuring about 6 inches tall, is dressed in a blue and purple tutu with gold trim. The doll has pink stockings and a purple bow in its orange hair. Its outstretched arms are attached to pink wings with red tips. The launcher is pink with the words, "Flying Angel" written in the white trim. The handle that pulls the string is gold. Both dolls are packaged on colorful cardboad backers with their launcher and are covered with clear plastic. "Agglo" and "MADE IN CHINA" are printed on the bottom front of the packages. Rite Aid drug stores in the eastern U.S. sold the dolls from February 1997 through January 1998 for about $3. The cribs have a drop gate (a rail that folds down) on the front of the crib, rather than a rail that slides up and down. A baby's fingers can be trapped in the folding drop gate and injured. Baby's Dream has received eight reports of babies' fingers being trapped in the drop gate, including seven reports of severe lacerations and one report of an adult's finger being injured. Baby's Dream is offering consumers a free repair kit, consisting of a new brass piano-style hinge for the entire length of the drop gate to replace the original four smaller hinges. The new hinge closes the space between the lower section of the crib rail and the top section that folds down. Only Generation full-size oak cribs with the identifying cut numbers 194 through 1897 are subject to this recall. The cut number is printed next to the word "Generation" on a label attached to the lower rail of the crib's back frame. Independent juvenile furniture stores nationwide sold the cribs from December 1994 through June 1997 for about $500 to $700. CPSC, Riteway Products Announce Recall of Bicycle Trailers WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Riteway Products of Santa Ana, Calif., recalled about 5,500 Cycle Design Tag-A-Long bicycle trailers to replace their U-Joints and accompanying hardware. The U-Joint can break causing the trailing rider to be separated from the towing bicycle, lose control, fall and be injured. CPSC and Riteway Products have received six reports of the U-Joint bolt hardware failing. Two minor injuries, such as cuts, scrapes and bruises, have been reported. The Cycle Design Tag-A-Long Trailer comes in three colors: blue, black or green. All of the trailers have the Tag-A-Long logo on the main tube of the trailer, as well as on the chain guard. The words "Cycle Design" are on the main tube of the trailer. Authorized Riteway Dealers nationwide sold the trailers from July 1997 through November 1997 for about $179. Consumers should stop using the trailer immediately and call their local bicycle dealer to see if they can replace the U-Joint and accompanying hardware. The firm (Riteway) is out of business and cannot be contacted. If the repair cannot be done, the product should be destroyed or discarded.
