Imported Toys Recalled by Lil' Mort Sales NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 20, 1988 Release # 88-114 Choking Hazards Prompt Recall Of Imported Toys WASHINGTON-- Lil Mort Sales of Chicago, Illinois is voluntarily recalling six small wind-up toys and klacker balls because they pose potential hazards to young children consumers. Sold nationwide during the last two years for less than the six wind-up toys include Funny Action planes trains, helicopters, and Busy Animals turtles and frogs. The Stretch Tail Pup brown-and-white plastic dog's tail is attached to the wheels. The dog's tail is attached to a pull-action string which activates the wheels. The dog's ears may separate from the toy and could present a choking hazard pull-action string which activates may separate from the toy young children. The Whistling Funny Action Toys are multi-colored plastic wind-up airplanes, helicopters and train engines measuring three, inches long. The toys are propellers and wind-up key choking hazard to young children. Busy Animals are wind-up frogs and turtles standing five inches tall and made of green, orange and yellow plastic. The arms and wind-up key may dislodge from the frog; the turtle's feet may also break off and present choking hazards to young children. Imported from Taiwan, the Klacker Balls consist of two one-and-one-third-inch, colored, solid plastic balls attached to both ends of a braided cotton-nylon cord. Klacker balls are banned because the balls may separate from the string and could cause injury to users or bystanders. November 30, 1988 Release # 88-107 "Silver Rail Express" Toy Train Recalled Because Of Potential Fire Hazard WASHINGTON, D. C - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), New Bright Industries of Canton, Michigan is voluntarily recalling some 38,000 battery-powered toy train sets because of a potential fire hazard. The train sets, identified as Model 41170, "Talking Silver Rail Express," were manufactured in Hong Kong and shipped to the U.S. between August 28, 1986 and November 5, 1986. New Bright Industries has received 16 complaints of toy train sets short-circuiting, causing the coal tender car to overheat. No injuries have been reported; however, consumers have reported nine incidents of the train catching fire. The train sets involved were manufactured with two different types of wire plug connectors between the coal tender car and the locomotive which transmit power current from the battery compartment in the coal tender car to the DC motor in the locomotive. One of these plug connectors is made of black plastic with a metal prong protruding straight forward. The other plug has a metal prong protruding at a 90-degree angle. All New Bright Model 1170 Silver Rail Express train sets manufactured and shipped in 1987 and 1988 have a plastic connector plug with no metal prong, and are not affected by the recall. New Bright Industries is offering a free replacement train set to owners of 1986 train sets. November 29, 1988 Release # 88-106 Repair Program Announced For Stomach Exerciser WASHINGTON-Some two million "Gut Buster" stomach exercise devices sold nationally by Gut Buster of Canton, Ohio are the subjects of a repair program undertaken by the company in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The product was sold between October 1986 and June 1987 for a price of $19.95.Acting on consumer reports of more than 700 unconfirmed injuries when the exercise spring broke, Gut Buster has developed a method of repairing the device to reduce chances of the spring breaking and injuring users. In some situations, the spring of the "Gut Buster" may be extended too far to withstand the additional stress and could snap. Consumers have allegedly experienced bruises, cuts and lacerations to the face and other parts of the body. Consumers should stop using the exercise device and are instructed to call Gut Buster's toll-free number at 1-800-325-7292 to receive the repair kit. Consumers can also write to Gut Buster at 1400 Raff Road, S.W., Canton, Ohio 44750. Step-by-step instructions will explain how to shorten and retie the safety cord that runs the entire inside length of the exercise spring. Release # 88-095 WASHINGTON, DC- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Challenger Electrical Equipment Corp. of Malvern, Pennsylvania, voluntarily offered free replacement of its 15 and 20 ampere type HAGF single pole ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) circuit breakers.These type HAGF-15 and type HAGF-20 circuit breakers were manufactured between February 22, 1988 and April 29, 1988, and most were sold nationwide to electrical product distributors during this period. Some may have been sold to consumers by retail hardware or lumber outlets. Approximately 9000 of these devices have not been located, some of which are believed to have been installed in residences. Type HAGF ground fault circuit breakers are devices, which provide protection to consumers against severe electric shock and electrocution as well as providing the normal circuit breaker functions of interrupting short circuits and electrical overloads.Although no electric shock incidents have been reported by Challenger, the firm recalled this product because is has determined, by quality control testing, that a mechanical part may become detached and prevent the ground fault feature of the circuit breaker from functioning. (The normal circuit breaker functions are not affected by this problem.)They protect residential 15 ampere and 20 ampere circuits including receptacle outlets in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, garages and outdoors as required by the National Electrical Code. The code also requires GFCI protection for receptacles in hotel and motel bathrooms. The HAGF circuit breakers, which may require replacement, are located in the electrical service panel. If the name "Challenger" is embossed on the front of the panel (on the door handle) and/or on the label on the back of the panel/door, that panel may contain circuit breakers requiring replacement. Affected circuit breakers have a yellow button and the word "test" in raised letters on one side; on the other side, the number 15 or 20 is printed on the handle in white letters between the raised words "ON" and "OFF." If the number on the handle is black or if there is a label it with white lettering next to the word "test , then the HAGF circuit breaker will not need to be replaced. Consumers should note that the HAGF circuit breakers which require replacement will only be found in dwellings which have been constructed since February 1988 or in which electrical work has been done since February 1988. Consumers who believe that they have installed HAGF circuit breakers requiring replacement should contact a licensed electrician to perform this work. Power to the panel should be shut off before inspecting and removing breakers.) Bultina Disposable Lighters Recalled By Paulshin International NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 10, 1988 Release # 88-94 Bultina Disposable Lighters Recalled By Paulshin International WASHINGTON - Paulshin International, Inc. of Chicago, Illinois is voluntarily recalling approximately 400,000 disposable lighters in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The lighter may flare-up unexpectedly or may fail to extinguish when the control level is released. The models involved are 700LT and 701LT and were imported since 1987. Laboratory testing found that some of the lighters may have been mis-assembled during manufacturing. There has been one reported serious burn injury associated with this product. These disposable 3-1/2 inches in length with transparent plastic bodies which are either red, green, clear, or yellow/orange in color. The silver colored metal windguards are labeled "Bultina" and Korea". The lighters were sold either loose or blister packed under the name Red-Match. Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the lighters and return them to the place of purchase for a refund. The correct model numbers for the dolls are "Cupid Dolls" #3004, #3005, #3035, #3036, #3057, #3058 and #3220; "Jill Doll" #3027; "Sandi Doll" #3028; "Paula Doll" #3029; "Charlotte Doll" #3062; "Beth Doll" #3068; "Baby Doll" #3087; and "Strawberry Girl" #3101. WASHINGTON, DC - Four rattles and 14 small dolls are being voluntarily recalled by Fibre Craft Materials Corp. of Niles, Illinois because of possible choking hazards to infants and young children. Sold in craft stores, the rattles and dolls were marketed as decorations. Craft Dolls Recalled By Wang's International NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 2, 1988 Release # 88-60 Wang's International Recalls Craft Dolls WASHINGTON, DC - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Wang's International, Inc., Memphis, Tennessee is voluntarily recalling two styles of its craft dolls. These dolls have arms which may be pulled off and present a choking hazard to young children. Neither CPSC nor Wang's International know of any injuries involving these craft dolls. Wang's International packaged these unclothed soft plastic dolls in clear plastic bags with labels. One doll is a 4 1/2-inch Cupid doll #PDT 3538. The other is a 5 1/2-inch doll #PDT631D, which has red hair, freckles and red painted-on shoes. The identification numbers only appear on the package labels and not on the dolls themselves. These craft dolls were sold through craft stores nationwide, retailing for approximately $1.00 each. July 14, 1988 Release # 88-051 Importer Recalls Water Toys; Toy Snake WASHINGTON, DC - Beachcombers International Inc. of Fort Myers, Florida is voluntarily recalling water toys and a squeaking toy snake because they may pose choking and lead poisoning hazards to young children. The imported toys recalled by Beachcombers International are: - "Big Mouth Fish, Hippo, and Frog," plastic wind-up water toys labeled "MASUDAYA 1976 Made in Hong Kong;" some 8,000 toys were sold nationally for about $2 each. - "Devil Fish," an eight-inch wind-up toy in the shape of a fish which was imported from Hong Kong and sold for $2 in New Jersey and Virginia. - "Lively Squeaking Snake," a plastic cobra snake some 21 inches long from China which sold nationally for $1. Consumers should immediately take the toys away from children and return them to the retail store for a refund of the purchase price. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said both water toys have small parts, which may present a choking hazard to young children; the toy snake contains an excessive amount of lead in the surface coating. The violations were discovered by U.S. Customs' agents and CPSC inspectors during routine import surveillance at the Port of Miami. Loud Speaker Components Recalled by Electro-Voice NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 11, 1988 Release #88-047 Loud Speaker Components Recalled WASHINGTON, D.C.- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Electro-Voice, Inc. has recalled EVX professional sound reinforcement loudspeakers built and shipped between July 31, 1987 and February 8, 1988. The loudspeaker components, model numbers EVX-150, EVX-156, EVX-180, EVX-184, EVX-1500 and EVX-1800 contain uninsulated lead wires and overly - long terminal lugs which may, during maximum excursion, ignite the carbon fiber/paper composite speaker cone. Approximately 65 speakers remain unaccounted for (as of June 28, 1988), sold mainly in New York City and northern California; the majority of these are said to have been sold to customers who took them out of the United States. Consumers should immediately return EVX loudspeakers purchased before March 1, 1988 to their place of purchase. Those customers who return loudspeaker model numbers EVX-150, EVX-156, and EVX-180 will receive in exchange a newly manufactured unit with fully tested modification in place. Smurf and Snoopy Ceiling Fans Replacement by Lindsley NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 22, 1988 Release # 88-044 Lindsley Undertakes Replacement Program for Ceiling Fans WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Lindsley Home Decorating Centers, Miami Lakes, Florida announces a notification and replacement program involving the "SMURF" and "SNOOPY" models of ceiling fans sold through Lindsley retail stores. These ceiling fans have a defective mounting bracket assembly, which could cause the ceiling fan to fall from its support. Serious injury could result to anyone who is struck by one of these falling ceiling fans. There have been three incidents of these ceiling fans falling, with two people receiving minor injuries. Lindsley sold 1,500 units each of the "SMURF" and "SNOOPY" models of these 48", 4-blade reversible ceiling fans through its 43 Lindsley retail stores located in the southern part of Florida. Sales were made from the latter part of 1984 through 1985. These ceiling fans sold for a retail price ranging from $20 to $80. These ceiling fans are white in color and have the "SNOOPY" and "SMURF" characters on the ceiling fans. During the latter part of 1985, Lindsley initiated a program to replace the defective mounting brackets on these ceiling fans. Lindsley Home Decorating Centers is now undertaking a new replacement program to replace both the original defective mounting bracket and the replacement bracket previously offered by Lindsley. This program includes not only the replacement of the mounting bracket but also the nylon ball that fits into the bracket. Dry Suit AC Valve Recalled by DUI NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 20, 1988 Release # 88-042 DUI Dry Suit AC Valve Recalled WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Diving Unlimited International, Inc. (DUI) of San Diego, California is announcing a recall of its AC (air control) dry suit valve because the valve malfunctions. The DUI AC valve is used on SCUBA diving dry suits. The DUI AC valve deflates or inflates the diving dry suit to allow the diver to equalize air pressure while ascending or descending in the water by pressing on the valve. The AC valve differs from the standard 2-valve system commonly used in dry suits, where air intake and outflow are controlled by two separate valves. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is aware of incidents involving 16 divers which are associated with AC valve malfunction. The valve may free-flow causing air to fill the dry suit resulting in the diver rising rapidly to the surface or failing to provide sufficient air to maintain buoyancy. The possibility exists of serious injury and/or death, especially if appropriate emergency procedures are not followed. Owners of dry suits with AC valves attached should immediately stop using the dry suits. DUI asks that all divers return their suits (at DUI's expense) and have the AC valve replaced at no charge. All dry suits returned to DUI will be tested and DUI will fix any leaks in the suit (except for seals) at no additional charge. Further, if the diver wishes to upgrade the valve system, this will be done at the manufacturer's cost of the valves only. Stuffed Bear Recalled by Toycraft NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 6, 1988 Release # 88-035 Toycraft Recalls Stuffed Bear WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Toycraft Industries of Brooklyn, New York is voluntarily recalling a stuffed teddy bear. The eyes and nose come off the bear and are small parts which present a serious choking hazard. A 2 year old child died of asphyxiation when the plastic nose from the teddy bear lodged at the base of her larynx. The teddy bears are 26 inches tall and 9 inches wide across the chest and come in assorted colors. A sewn-in tag on the bears identifies the manufacturer as "Toycraft Industries, Inc., Brooklyn, New York," and further states, "Stuffed Toys for Tots and Teens." Consumers should take the bear away from young children. A full refund will be offered at the store where the bear was purchased. Propane Grills Modification Kits by Sunbeam Leisure NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 2, 1988 Release # 88-034 Sunbeam Leisure Products Providing Modification Kits For Windows on Propane Grills WASHINGTON -- Following reports of spontaneous breakage of glass windows of 1988 Sunbeam Leisure outdoor propane gas grills, the Sunbeam Leisure Products Company of Neosho, Missouri is initiating a modification program to remount the glass windows to prevent breakage. In a voluntary modification program undertaken in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Sunbeam Leisure said that, because of the way the window was mounted, the glass may spontaneously break from the heat of the grill. Incidents of consumers reporting minor injuries from broken glass are being investigated. A limited number of the suspect grills were sold in the latter part of last year, but most have been sold in 1968. An estimated 320,000 grills are currently in consumer use including Yardmaster models sold by Channel Home Centers and Sears Kenmore models 10663, 10684, 10783 and 10883. Consumers who bought 1988 models of Sunbeam Leisure, Yardmaster and the above Kenmore propane gas grills with a glass window will be supplied with a free modification kit and instructions on remounting the window. The installation can be easily performed by the consumer without special tools. Circus America Playpens Modification by C&T International NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 23, 1988 Release # 88-030 Playpens to be Modified Because of Hazards to Children WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, C&T International, Inc., Moonachie, New Jersey, today announced it is voluntarily making available to consumers a free modification kit for its mesh-sided playpen with drop sides, model number 585, "Circus America." Some of the playpens fail to warn users of a potential suffocation hazard if an infant is left in the playpen with one of the sides down. All of the playpens present a finger crushing hazard at two locations in the drop side locking system. In addition, when the playpens are folded for storage, it is possible for a child to remove the plastic feet which may present a choking hazard. The Commission is aware of a number of deaths and injuries involving mesh-sided playpens with drop sides produced by firms other than C&T. Eleven infants are known to have died when left unattended in playpens with a drop side down. These children suffocated when they rolled into a mesh pocket created by the lowered drop side. The Commission is also aware of several incidents in which children's fingers were crushed when they attempted to climb into a playpen grasping the folded drop side locking system. The playpens involved in these incidents were not manufactured by C&T; however, some of the playpens sold by C&T are similar to the playpens involved in the incidents and present the same hazards. The affected collapsible mesh-sided playpens may be identified by a self-adhesive label on the floorboard which states: Art. 585, CIRCUS AMERICA EX. The playpens measure 39 by 39 by 33 inches and contain a removable foam floor pad. The product has four plastic rings about three inches in diameter on the inside which can be used by a child to pull up on. Four hinges made of plastic must be pushed up in order to fold the playpen. The product, which is imported from Italy, retails for about $89.99. The "Circus Polo" playpen model number 582 is not affected by this action. Approximately, 2,500 playpens have been distributed nationwide since November 1984. Although some of the playpens have the suffocation hazard warning label, all of the playpens present a finger crushing hazard in the folded drop side locking system and a choking hazard in the removable plastic feet. The kit contains a Safety Alert warning of the potential suffocation hazard, plastic inserts to prevent the possibility of finger crushing incidents in the folded drop side locking system, and replacement plastic feet which can not be removed by young children. Children should never be left in playpens with the drop sides down. Until owners receive and install the modification kit, the plastic feet should be removed and discarded.
Rainbox Bell Baby Rattles Recalled by LI Peng Enterprises NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 11, 1988 Release # 88-027 Li Peng Enterprises Recalls Rainbow Bell Baby Rattles WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Li Peng Enterprises, Inc., Los Angeles, California today announced the voluntary recall of Rainbow Bell baby rattles, Item CT-8013, which present a choking hazard to infants. The rattles are multicolored plastic with a handle made up of what appears to be beads at one end and 4 bell-shaped noise makers in a circle at the other end. The item is labeled, "C T Made In Taiwan". Neither Li Peng nor the Commission know of any injuries caused by these baby rattles. The rattle presents a choking hazard because the handle is small enough to enter a child's mouth and long enough to reach the back of the throat and because the metal bell can detach from the top part of the rattle. Consumers should take the rattles away from infants immediately and return the rattles to the retail store where purchased for a full refund of the purchase price. Approximately 86,400 of the baby rattles were sold between June 1987 and August 1987 for $2.85. The rattles were identified during Operation Toyland import surveillance in the Port of Los Angeles. Operation Toyland is part of a cooperative program between U.S. Customs and the CPSC to stop noncomplying hazardous toys from being distributed.
LP Gas Grills Safety Alert by W.C. Bradley Issues Safety Alert on LP Gas Grills WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, W.C. Bradley Enterprises, Columbus, Georgia, today issued a safety alert for approximately 1.8 million LP gas grills manufactured from 1983 through 1985 under the CHAR-BROIL and PATIO KITCHEN labels. The Commission and W.C. Bradley are aware of 330 reports of loosening of the connection of the gas hose to the gas valve. This could result in gas leaking and possibly igniting. Neither the Commission nor W.C. Bradley is aware of any injuries or extensive property damage involving these grills. These gas grills did not have the hose and regulator pre-assembled to the valve. As part of the assembly of the grill, the consumer had to connect the hose to the valve. The owner's manual did not include instructions specifying the use of a wrench to tighten this connection. Consumers should use a wrench to make certain that the connection between the hose and valve is tight. While facing the front of the grill, turn the wrench in a counterclockwise direction. Ski Bindings Recalled by Tyrolia NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 3, 1988 Release # 88-011 Tyrolia Recalls Ski Bindings WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Tyrolia Freizeitgerate of Austria, makers of ski equipment, today announced the voluntary recall in the United States of 450,000 1982-1986 model Tyrolia ski bindings because of toe and heel lug breakage, which can pose a risk of serious injury to skiers. Generally, should breakage occur, it will happen while the boot is being inserted into the binding. Should the lug break during usage, however, serious injuries associated with loss of control could occur, such as fractures and soft tissue injuries. To date, there have been reports of five injuries in the United States that may be related to a lug failure of this type. The toe lug is the U-shaped uppermost movable component of the toe of the ski binding. The heel lug is the U-shaped piece at the front of the binding's heel. Their function is to hold the sole of the ski boot to the ski. (See attached illustration) The recall includes the following models, in the specified toe lug colors, but only those with a production code on the heel either beginning with the letter or ending with the number specified below, or both. The production number is stamped on the right side of the base of the heel piece; it car be seen more readily with a magnifying glass. Recalled product returned to the retailer by April 30, l988 - the end of the ski season - will be replaced at no charge for the product or remounting. For recalled product returned to the store after April 30, 1988, the customer has the choice of a completely reconditioned product at no charge for the product or remounting, or a new and current similar model at a charge of $21 for adult models or $18 for junior models in the United States, including remounting. The charge in Canada will be $25 for adult models or $20 for junior models, including remounting. Resort area dealers will have only limited quantities of replacement stock available so consumers should not wait until they arrive at a resort to seek replacement before April 30. Because we have high industry standards of quality and reliability, we have always stood behind our products. We therefore urge customers to discontinue us of these models of bindings and see their dealer as soon as possible." Preway and Arkla Furnaces Correction NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 17, 1988 Release # 88-006 Plan for High Efficiency Furnaces WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Arkla, Inc., of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Preway Industries of Evansville, Indiana, today announced they would implement a corrective action program for 60,000 high efficiency gas furnaces manufactured by Arkla and Preway and sold nationwide. The Corrective action program was developed by the two manufacturers in response to 387 complaints from owners that their furnaces have experienced internal corrosion. Such corrosion could allow dangerous carbon monoxide to pass into the living areas of the home. Among the complaints of internal corrosion, are eight complaints of nausea. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, but toxic gas which, in large amounts, can cause illness or death. Signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are flu-like symptoms -- headache, nausea, stomach upset and drowsiness. Over a period of time, the corrosion may cause the metal in some of the furnace components to deteriorate, and can progress to the point where holes can be created through which carbon monoxide could be released into the home. Subsequent testing has shown affected furnaces to be susceptible to corrosion when exposed to chlorine- or fluorine- containing compounds -- including salt for melting ice, paint stripper, fabric or water softener, bleach and adhesives -- found in some homes. Homeowners should not store or use such products near these furnaces. As part of the corrective action program, Preway and Arkla will inspect the furnaces at no charge. Based on the inspections, they will retrofit furnaces with an upgrade kit at no charge, or if the corrosion is very severe, will replace furnaces on a pro rata basis. Furnaces covered under this plan were manufactured by Arkla and Preway and were sold by the companies listed at the bottom of the page. Arkla and Preway are also continuing an earlier corrective program which includes the replacement of the external vents of furnaces covered by the plan due to corrosion. There have been 2,036 complaints of corrosion and seven allegations of carbon monoxide-related symptoms attributed to corrosion of the external vents of these furnaces. Miracle's Flying Animal Swings are Dangerous NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 16, 1987 Release # 87-080 Miracle Recreation Equipment CO. WASHINGTON, DC -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety commission announces that it has authorized its staff to issue an administrative Complaint against Miracle Recreation Equipment Co., of Grinnell, Iowa, seeking repair, replacement, or refund of the purchase price of approximately 12,000 Flying Animal Swings. The Complaint alleges that Miracle's "Flying Animal Swing", a two, three, four, or six seat swing, because of the weight, size, and composition of the individual animal swing figures and because of a metal support tube which projects to the rear of each swing, contains a defect which presents a substantial risk of injury to children. The Complaint alleges that there have been seven (7) cases of serious head injuries and one (1) fatality when children were struck by the swing. Until this matter is resolved, the Commission staff urges the public not to use these swings which are found primarily on public playgrounds around the country. The Flying Animal Swings may be either a pony, seal, lion, or a squirrel. The Commission's action was necessitated by Miracle's unwillingness voluntarily to remedy this problem. Miracle is currently conducting on-going recalls/repair programs of its "Flying Wheels", "Flying Gym", "Bounce-Around Whirl", and "Bukaroo Whirl".
