Chicco Crib Toy Recalled by Artsana of America NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 13, 1988 Release # 88-048 Potential Strangulation Hazard Prompts Recall of Chicco Crib Toy WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Some 136,000 Chicco-brand "Pram Mobiles" imported in 1987 and 1988 from Italy by Artsana of America, Inc., New York, N.Y., are being voluntarily recalled because of a potential strangulation hazard to infants. The majority of the toys were sold in Toys R Us Stores. Artsana said the crib toy retailed for $5-6 and consists of four pastel-colored, hard plastic bird and flower figures separated by three small balls. Two white cords at opposite ends allow the toy to be tied on a crib, carriage, playpen or stroller. While no strangulations or injuries have been reported, Artsana is undertaking this voluntary recall because consumers who read the package instructions may leave the toy in the crib longer than is considered safe. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Chicco "Pram Mobile II does not warn consumers that the toy should be removed when the child begins to push up on hands and knees, or has attained the age of five months. CPSC said five- month-old infants can pull themselves up to a hanging crib toy and become entangled or fall forward over it, possibly strangling. The toy contains no warning about when to remove it from a crib; moreover, the package recommends its use from birth to 18 months of age. Artsana said the Chicco crib toy is identified as item number 62926 on the package. Once removed from the package, the toy can be identified with words "Made in Italy" stamped on each of the plastic balls. Consumers who have the Chicco "Pram Mobile" should return it to the retail store for a refund of the purchase price, or send the toy to Artsana of America, Inc. 200 Fifth Avenue, #910, New York, N.Y. 10010. The firm will refund the purchase price and postage.
Animal Voices Musical Toys Recalled By Toys R Us NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 26, 1987 Release # 87-013 Animal Voices Musical Toys Recalled Because of Choking Hazard WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Toys-R-Us, Rochelle Park, New Jersey is recalling Animal Voices Musical Toys, Model 670508B, because they have small parts which are a choking hazard. Tests conducted by CPSC show that when the toys are dropped, the metal noisemakers and springs, which are small parts, detach. To meet CPSC safety requirements, toys intended for children younger than 3 years old must not have any small parts. The Animal Voices Musical Toys are cardboard cylinders measuring l-3/4 inches long by l-5/8 inches in diameter. One end of the cylinder is metal with holes in it. The other end is covered with green paper with the word, "TAIWAN", printed on it in several places. Pictures of animals are printed on the side of the cylinder. When the cylinder is tilted it makes a noise like a baby animal. The Animal Voices Musical Toys are packaged,in pairs on a pink card labeled "RECOMMENDED FOR AGES 6 MONTHS AND UP 2 PC ANIMAL VOICES 1986 SUMMCO INTERNATIONAL LTD., P.O. BOX 96-306 TAIPEI, TAIWAN DISTRIBUTED BY LASH DISTRIBUTORS, ROCHELLE PARK, N.J. 07662 NO. 670508 * * *". Approximately 56,500 of these toys, which were imported from Taiwan, were sold nationwide through Toys-R-Us stores from April, 1985 to December, 1986 for approximately $1.48. Although the CPSC and Toys-R-Us have not received reports of any injuries or deaths involving this toy, consumers should take these toys away from children and return them to any Toys-R-Us store for full refund of the purchase price. Slide Ladders Recalled by Carolina Enterprises NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 26, 1983 Release # 83-030 Carolina Enterprises To Recall Empire Slide Ladders WASHINGTON, D.C.-- In cooperation with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Carolina Enterprises, Inc., Tarboro, North Carolina, today announced a voluntary replacement program affecting approximately 100,000 of its Super Slide Item #9005. The ladder with this Supper Slide presents a potential safety hazard in that the heads of small children may become entrapped between the ladder rungs. The Commission is aware of one instance in which a child's head became entrapped between the top step of the ladder and the platform. No injury occurred as a result of this incident. The Supper Slide consists of a plastic red sliding board with a yellow ladder and comes unassembled. The name "Empire" appears at the foot of the sliding bord. Ladders which have been manufactured since June, 1982, are not subject to replacement. These redesigned ladders can be identified by the pre-formed plastic piece attached to the underside of each ladder rung. The new slides are now blue in color. The Super Slide wassold by numerous retail stores nationwide including Toy "R" Us, K Mart, Woolworth/Woolco, and by J.C. Penney Company in its catalogue. J.C. Penny Company, which was able to identify individual purchasers, has already notified its customers by direct mail and has completed the replacement program. The units being recalled sold for approximately $30.00 and were produced from 1980 until June, 1982, when the design change was made in the ladder. Consumers owning affected slides should discontinue use of the ladder and call Empire toll-free at 800-334-5666 for a free replacement ladder or write to Carolina Enterprises, P.O. Box 427, Tarboro, North Carolina 27866. This replacement program also applies to consumers who purchased affected products at Woolco stores which have since gone out of business. Carolina plans to send notices to all of its retail customers seeking their assistance in placing posters in stores, providing a list of consumers who purchased the slide and any other help they can provide in replacing as many of these ladders as possible.
