The recall involves propane and natural gas water heaters in 40, 50, and 75 gallon capacities. The recalled water heaters are white with a red "Giant" logo decal on the front. The water heaters have a nameplate near the Emerson gas control valve with the following model number ranges. UG40-38LFPV2-P1U-US, UG40-40LFPV2-N1U-US, UG50-38LFPV2-P1U-US, UG50-38LFPV2-P2U-US, UG50-38TFPDV1-N2U-US, UG50-40LFPV2-N1U-US, UG50-40LFPV2-N2U-US, UG75-76MEPV1-N2U-US, UG75-76MEPV1-P2U-US. The control valves are black with a white "Emerson" logo on the front. The Emerson control valve model numbers and date code are located on a label on the right-hand side of the bracket holding the Emerson control valve to the gas water heater. The recalled control valve model numbers are 37H73A-301P1 (natural gas) and 37H74A-301P1 (propane) with a date code between 1821 and 1839.

This recall involves all White-Rodgers programmable thermostats with model numbers 1F88-XXX and 1F85RF-275 and date codes beginning with 05, 06, 07, 08, 09 and 1001 through 1039. The model number is printed on the thermostat's front pull-down panel door. The date code is located inside the removable front cover. White-Rodgers and/or the utility company's name and logo are printed on the front of the thermostat. These thermostats were able to be controlled by power companies in homes that took part in energy demand reduction programs.

The temperature control is a small metal box located above the access panel door of the gas water heater. A white label with red lettering located on the right side of the control contains one of the following model numbers: 37C55U 658, 37C57U 602, 37C72U 520, 37C72U 546, 37C72U 547, or 37C72U 548, and 37C72U 676. There should be a four- digit metal stamped date code located below the label on the right side of the control. Recalled controls will have date codes 0240 to 0329 (40th week of 2002 to 29th week of 2003). Potentially affected gas water heaters include: AO Smith, Apollo, Crosley, Energysense, Freedom, Intertherm, Kenmore, Maytag, Mission, Myers, Penfield, President, Reliance, Sentry, or State. Announce Recall of ATV Winch Kits Washington, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Warn Industries Inc., of Oregon, is voluntarily recalling 50,000 winch kits, which attach to All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and are used as a vehicle recovery tool. An electrical component of the winch kit, the solenoid, poses a fire hazard when used in this application, even when the vehicle is parked and the winch is not in use. The solenoid was manufactured by White-Rodgers.Warn Industries has received five reports of ATV fires started from winch kits installed on these vehicles in the U.S., and four reports of ATV fires in Canada. One consumer reportedly suffered smoke inhalation as a result of one of these fires. The fires resulted in loss or damage to the ATVs and, in some cases, adjacent vehicles or surrounding structures.The A2000 winch kit is normally mounted directly to the ATV. To control the winch direction, the A2000 uses a round switch that mounts to the rack or handlebars of the ATV. The winch is gray and has a "Warn" logo on the body of the winch below the model number, "A2000." The A2000 winch kit includes a solenoid, which is used to interrupt the power to the winch. "White-Rodgers" is written on the label of the solenoid. The solenoid is found attached to the power wire between the battery and the switch. The bracket used to attach the affected solenoid has one open slot and one hole. ATV dealers and specialty retailers nationwide and mail order catalogs sold these ATV winch kits from November 2000 through May 2001 for about $400. These boilers' gas control valves, made by White-Rodgers, could have gas pressure settings that are too high. Incorrect gas pressure can cause the boiler to produce dangerous carbon monoxide, which can then leak, causing serious injury or death. Weil-McLain has received three reports of carbon monoxide detectors alarming due to the release of carbon monoxide from these boilers. No injuries or deaths have been reported. The Weil-McLain model GV gas boilers subject to this recall are equipped with certain White-Rodgers model 36C98-303 gas control valves with date codes 9621 through 9723. The date code and model number can be found on the unit's gas control valve, which is located at the front and center section of the boiler under the jacket. Also, all Weil-McLain GV boilers located at elevations more than 7,000 feet above sea level are being recalled. These boilers have "WEIL-McLAIN GOLD GV" written on the boiler jacket. Heating and cooling companies and contractors sold these boilers nationwide from June 1996 to November 1997 for about $1,500 to $3,000. Approximately 1,000 GV boilers were installed from June 1990 to January 1998 at locations above 7,000 feet elevation. Consumers should immediately check to see if they have a Weil-McLain GV boiler affected by this recall. For assistance in checking the boiler's gas valve model and date code, or for other additional information, consumers should call Weil-McLain at (219) 879-6561. If a consumer has an affected boiler, Weil-McLain will arrange for a free adjustment of the gas control valves' pressure setting.

February 15, 1996 Release # 96-070 WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), White-Rodgers, a division of Emerson Electric Co., St. Louis, Mo., is replacing certain White-Rodgers Model 37 and 37C natural gas water heater temperature controls manufactured between March 1994 and October 1994. Soot can build up on the water heater burner, presenting a fire hazard. Approximately 1.6 million valves were manufactured during this period.White-Rodgers has received 32 reports of such sooting. Twenty-three of these reports alleged charring or fire, but there have been no injuries.The temperature controls resemble a small metal box located above the access panel door of the natural gas water heater. A white label located on the right side of the box contains the model number, which begins with the number "37." Retail distributors and independent servicers have installed the controls since April 1994. Consumers should check their water heaters for signs of malfunction. Signs that the heater should be inspected include: discoloration or black soot on the lower outside surface on the front, sides or back of water heater; a pilot flame that keeps extinguishing; or an unusual burning odor around the water heater.Consumers who own water heaters with these signs should use a mirror to identify the date code located in the upper left corner on the back of the metal box. Consumers who own controls with dates code 9412 to 9440 (12th week of 1994 to 40th week of 1994) should call White-Rodgers at (800) 426-3503 to arrange for a qualified service technician to inspect and, if necessary, replace the control free of charge.Warning!: DO NOT attempt to replace the gas water heater temperature control or service the water heater if you are not specifically trained to do this. Natural gas may leak from the control, and if ignited, could catch fire.
