The nightlights' electrical connections are loose, they are made from flammable plastic and the power switch does not work. The nightlights pose shock and fire hazards to consumers. CPSC and Dura Kleen are not aware of any injuries associated with these nightlights. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The nightlights consist of a small light fixture that uses a 5- watt bulb that plugs into a wall electrical outlet. The light bulb white bases are imprinted with "Made in China for Dura Kleen USA Inc." The night lights have different colored shades, including purple, green, yellow and red, with different designs. Other lights have opaque decorative shades molded in the form of religious figures. Discount stores nationwide sold the nightlights from March 1999 through August 2000 for about $1. Announce Recall of Air Conditioners Sold in Puerto Rico WASHINGTON, D.C.- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Carrier (Puerto Rico) Inc., of Cantano, Puerto Rico, is voluntarily recalling about 460 air conditioners. Condensation inside these air conditioning units can splash onto the control board, causing it to short circuit and start a fire. Carrier has received two reports of fires as a result of short circuits with these air conditioning units resulting in extensive property damage. No injuries have been reported. The recall involves Carrier duct-free "high wall split air conditioners." These air conditioners have half the unit inside and half outside. Each half of the unit contains a separate model number. Model number 42RCA is located on the plastic grill covering on the inside part of the unit. Model number 38RCA is located on the lower rear side on the outside part of the unit. "Carrier" is written on the front of these units. Independent dealers and technicians in Puerto Rico sold these air conditioners from January 1998 through September 1999 for between $800 and $2,000. Consumers should stop using these air conditioners immediately, and call Carrier to get a free replacement unit installed. Voyager Heating and Air Conditioning Systems Recall by Trane Company Recall Alert U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 January 24, 2001 Alert #01-507 CPSC, Trane Company Announce Recall of Voyager Heating and Air Conditioning Systems PRODUCT: Combination Gas Furnace and Electric Air Conditioning Units - The Trane Company, of Tyler, Texas, a division of American Standard Companies Inc., is voluntarily recalling 967 Voyager Series Combination Gas Furnace and Electric Air Conditioning Units, which are installed in schools and commercial applications. The Voyager series of light commercial rooftop air conditioners with electric cooling and gas-fired heat exchangers have 120,000 to 135,00 BTU heating capacity and three to five ton cooling capacity in horizontal and downflow configurations. The Voyager series has been manufactured by Trane since 1988 and is distributed under the Trane® and American Standard® brand names. The recalled units were manufactured between June 1, 2000 and August 16, 2000 and have serial numbers beginning with R21 though and including R33. This could allow flue gases, including carbon monoxide, to enter the building airstream. This could result in serious injury or death to building occupants. INCIDENTS/INJURIES: None reported. WHAT TO DO:Call the local independent Trane or American Standard dealer for a free inspection and replacement, if needed. Trane will completely replace the heat exchanger end plate and internal flue gas tube assemblies in all recalled units at no cost to the consumer. The battery charger can fail to automatically shut off after the battery is fully charged, which can cause the battery to burst, and poses fire, burn and electrical shock hazards to consumers. DEWALT has received two reports of batteries bursting and consumers suffering injuries, including minor lacerations and a minor burn. The DEWALT battery chargers have model numbers DW9107 and DW9108, which is written on the front of the charger. The recalled DEWALT chargers have date codes from 9616 through 9752 located on the bottom of the charger. The DEWALT chargers are black with yellow lettering. "DEWALT" is written on the front of the chargers. The Black & Decker Industry & Construction battery chargers have model numbers 97015 and 97016. The model number is written on the front of the chargers. They have date codes from 9616 through 9752, which is located on the bottom of the chargers. The Black & Decker Industry & Construction chargers are black. "Black & Decker Industry and Construction" is written on the front of these chargers. Home center and hardware stores sold these battery chargers nationwide from May 1996 through August 2000 for between $50 and $60. During the same time, these chargers also were sold with some DEWALT® and Black & Decker Industry & Construction cordless tools. Consumers should stop using these battery chargers immediately, and take them to a DEWALT or Black & Decker service center for a free replacement. The motors are used in many applications including carbonation machines and commercial fans. The model numbers included in the recall are 6K361B, 6K804B, and 5K887D&E. The manufacturing numbers included in the recall are MK99C, ML99C, MM99C, MA00C, MB00C, MC00C, MD00C, ME00C, MF00C and MG00C. The model and manufacturing numbers are located on the motor nameplate attached to the side of the motor. These motors were sold directly through motor distributors or repair shops from October 1999 through August 2000 for about $95. PROBLEM: If the motor is not properly grounded as instructed, the motor could become energized and cause a shock or electrocution hazard resulting in injury or death. GE Dishwasher Recall and Repair NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 14, 2000 Release # 01-054 GE Recall Hotline: (800) 599-2929 CPSC Consumer Hotline: (800) 638-2772 CPSC Media Contact: Ken Giles, (301) 504-7052 CPSC and GE Announce Free Repair Supplement of Rebate Program for Recalled Dishwashers: Recalled Units Still Being Used, Creating Risk of Fire WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), General Electric Appliances Co., of Louisville, Ky., is voluntarily offering a free repair option in the form of a rewiring for its recalled GE and Hotpoint dishwashers. With the free rewire option, a GE-authorized technician will rewire the slide switch at no cost to consumers. This supplements the original rebate program announced October 19, 1999. The dishwashers have a slide switch that can melt and ignite, presenting a fire hazard. CPSC is aware of approximately 90 incidents associated with these dishwashers. GE manufactured 3.1 million of these dishwashers between 1983 and 1989. In the recall announced last year, GE provided consumers with a rebate toward the purchase of a new dishwasher. CPSC and GE are announcing the supplemental rewiring option to increase the effectiveness of the original program, which has to date been implemented in over 628,000 units. CPSC and GE are cooperating in an effort to reach people who may not have previously come forward. Both the CPSC and GE strongly urge consumers who have not replaced their recalled units under the original rebate program to contact GE right away to schedule a free rewiring or participate in the original rebate program. Until the dishwasher has been rewired, consumers should keep the dishwasher door unlatched at all times to prevent the flow of electrical current that creates a risk of fire. The slide switch allows consumers to choose between heated drying and "energy saver" functions. Over time, the slide switch can melt and ignite, presenting a fire hazard. In the free rewiring program announced today, GE-authorized technicians will rewire the slide switch, eliminating it from the electrical circuit and thereby eliminating the fire risk. There have been approximately 90 incidents of fire, smoking and melted switches, 14 of which included fires that spread beyond the dishwasher. Approximately 10 incidents have occurred since the recall announcement. No injuries have been reported. The GE and Hotpoint dishwashers involved are models beginning with GSD500D, GSD500G, GSD540, HDA467, HDA477, or HDA487 with a serial number that has a second letter of A, M, R, S, T, V or Z (for example, BM12345). The model and serial numbers are located on a rectangular label that is on either the right or left front edge of the inner tub. The GE or Hotpoint brand name is on the front of the dishwasher. Consumers that have one of these recalled dishwashers should immediately discontinue use, unlatch the door, and contact GE at 1-800- 599-2929 anytime or at www.geappliancerecall.com. The fans being recalled are a 12-inch desk fan, a 16-inch desk fan, a 16-inch stand fan, an 18- inch stand fan with three legs, and an 18-inch stand fan with a round base. Writing on all of these fans includes "AGIS" and "MADE IN TAIWAN."
These Sterling-brand screwdriver-type circuit testers are about 5.25 inches long. The tester looks similar to a small screwdriver, and has a clear, plastic handle. Inside the handle is a spring and small light. The tester has a red plastic end cap. There is no writing on the testers. The model number, "ML-24," and "MADE IN CHINA" are written on the packaging.

Announce Recall of Cooling System PRODUCT: Mini-Mate2 Environmental Control Units - Liebert Corp., of Columbus, Ohio, is recalling about 1500 Mini-Mate2 environmental control units, which are used as a cooling system in computer rooms. The recalled units are 277-volts and 1.5, 2 and 3 tons with electric reheat. The units are mounted in the ceiling and use ducts or special distribution grills to distribute the air. Liebert Corp. sold these units nationwide from January 1998 through August 2000 for between $3,000 and $8,000. PROBLEM: An electric heating element inside the system that is used primarily in the dehumidification process, can short circuit and produce sparks, posing a smoke and fire risk. INCIDENTS/INJURIES: No injuries have been reported. WHAT TO DO: For more information about the recall, contact Liebert Corp. at (800) 543-2778 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday for instructions on disconnecting the reheat assembly. The recalled batteries were sold with the following Dell notebook computers: Latitude CPiA, CPiR, CPtC, CPtS, CPtV, CPxH and CPxJ, and Inspiron 3700 and 3800. The batteries also were sold separately, including in response to service calls. The batteries insert into the front-left and/or front-right of the computer. "DELLTM" and "MADE IN JAPAN" are written on the batteries. The batteries' identification number is written on a white sticker. Consumers should have this number available when they contact Dell to determine if their battery is part of the recall.
The battery chargers are model number DW9116, which is written on the front and bottom of the charger housing. The chargers are black with yellow lettering. "DeWALT" is written on the front of the chargers. The recalled chargers have date codes from 9927EM through 9952EM and 0001EM through 0031EM located on the bottom of the charger. These chargers are for 9.6- to 18-volt batteries used with DeWALT cordless tools. Chargers with a yellow or green dot sticker near the date code already have been repaired, and are not recalled.

CPSC, Appliance Co. of America Announce Recall of Toaster Ovens WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Appliance Co. of America, of Great Neck, N.Y., recalled about 7,000 Welbilt toaster ovens. The ovens' heating elements can break, causing the glass door to shatter. The toasters could short circuit, causing electrical shocks and fires. Appliance Co. of America has received 14 reports of heating elements breaking. In one incident, the glass door broke, and in another, a countertop was scorched. No injuries have been reported. These Welbilt toaster ovens with rotisserie and griddle have model number TR660 on the back of the oven. The oven is white and black about 17 inches wide and 12 inches high, and has a glass door. Three knobs on the right side of the oven control the temperature; function, such as broil, rotisserie, toast and bake; and length of time. "WELBILT® Toaster Oven With Rotisserie & Griddle" is written on the oven's lower-right front. Club, discount and department stores, and mail order catalogs sold the toaster ovens nationwide from January 2000 through May 2000 for about $100. Consumers should stop using these toaster ovens immediately and discard or destroy them. The firm is out of business and cannot be contacted.

The faceplate on these nightlights can be broken off, exposing wiring and posing shock and electrocution hazards. CPSC and The First Years have received three reports of the faceplates on these nightlights breaking off resulting in two 1-year-old girls and an adult receiving an electrical shock when touching the exposed wires. The "Elmo Nitelight" shows the Sesame Street character Elmo, who is red, hanging onto a green lamp post set on a blue background. A moon and stars surround the light part of the lamp post, which illuminates when the light is plugged in. It measures 4.25 inches long by 2.75 inches wide and fits over the entire standard outlet coverplate. "Henson" and "the first years" are imprinted on the back of the nightlights. The cardboard packaging shows a picture of the Sesame Street character Big Bird, and includes the writing, "SESAME STREET" and "nitelight." Discount, drug, grocery and toy stores sold these nightlights from July 1997 through March 2000 for between $5 and $6. Consumers should immediately remove the "Elmo Nitelights" from their sockets and throw them away. If wires are exposed, turn off the power before removing. CPSC, Apollo Presentation Products Announce Recall of Light Boxes WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Apollo Presentation Products, of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling about 30,000 portable light boxes, used to view film, slides and transparencies. The light boxes have loose wires and lack adequate grounding, presenting fire, electrocution and shock hazards to consumers. CPSC has received two reports of loose wires, one in which the light box caught fire, resulting in $5,000 property damage. No injuries have been reported. The recalled Apollo light boxes are models LB100, LB101, LB102 and LB110. The model number is located on a sticker affixed to the unit's side. The sticker also reads in part, "Portable Light Box...CSA." The light box consists of a white metal box, containing a fluorescent light, and a Plexiglas viewing plate that slides into two black metal guides on top of the metal box. The light box has a folding handle and tilt stand, and it can be wall mounted. The light boxes were sold in a box labeled in part, "APOLLO PRESENTATION PRODUCTS, GLOWPRO PORTABLE LIGHT BOX, Made in China." A photo of the product and the model number are on the box. Office supply stores nationwide sold the light boxes from June 1997 through April 2000 for $66 to $115. Consumers should stop using the recalled light boxes immediately, and call ATVS, Inc. (which is now handling this recall) for instructions on returning the projectors to the company for a refund.
