Announce Recall of Upright Vacuum Cleaners WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), BISSELL® Homecare Inc. of Grand Rapids, Mich., is recalling about 207,000 PowerCleanTM and PureAirTM upright vacuum cleaners. The power cord insulation can tear where the cord attaches to the vacuum, exposing bare wires. This poses a risk of shock and burns to consumers. BISSELL is aware of 54 reports of the cords on these vacuums tearing. There has been one report of a consumer suffering a burn injury on her hand. The recall includes one model of the BISSELL PowerCleanTM vacuum and three models of the BISSELL® PureAirTM vacuum cleaners. The PowerCleanTM vacuum has model number 3540-1 and is black. The PureAirTM vacuum has model number 3540-2 and is blue. The PureAirTM Deluxe vacuum has model number 3541, and is purple. The PureAirTM Platinum vacuum has model number 3541-P, and is purple. The model number is located on a label on the back of the vacuum. These vacuums have date codes from 98176000 through 99254999, located in the bottom right-hand corner of the label. The recalled vacuums do not have a 3-inch plastic flex relief where the power cord enters the vacuum handle. Major discount, appliance and department stores sold these vacuum cleaners nationwide from July 1998 through March 2000 for between $89 and $159. Consumers should stop using these vacuum cleaners immediately, and contact BISSELL to arrange for a free repair through BISSELL's authorized service network. Announce Recall of EASY-OFF Oven Cleaner WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Reckitt & Colman Inc., of Wayne, N.J., is voluntarily recalling about 50,000 cans of EASY-OFF Heavy Duty Oven Cleaner. The oven cleaner's contents can spew out because of an improperly attached valve assembly that can separate from the can. Direct contact with the contents poses a risk of chemical burns to consumers' skin and eyes. Reckitt & Colman has received 18 reports of these cans spewing oven cleaner, resulting in 12 reports of chemical burns to consumers' skin and eyes. The 16-oz. aerosol cans of oven cleaner being recalled are yellow and have a solid yellow plastic cap. "EASY-OFF" is in bold black letters at the top part of the can, "HEAVY DUTY" is written in white letters inside a red block, and "Original" is written in white letters over a blue background. Only the oven cleaner with lot number B9305-NJ2 printed on the bottom of the can is part of the recall. Supermarkets, mass merchandisers, hardware, drug and other stores nationwide sold the oven cleaner from November 1999 through January 2000 for about $3 to $4. Consumers should not remove the cap of this oven cleaner. Consumers should wrap the recalled can of oven cleaner in several layers of newspaper, take it outside and dispose of it with the regular household trash. The company will send consumers a replacement oven cleaner coupon. Announce Recall of Millennium Candles Sold at SAMS CLUB Stores WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Hanna's Candle Co., of Fayetteville, Ark., is voluntarily recalling more than 3,000 Millennium candles sold to SAMS CLUB. The candle holder can crack when the burning wick touches the side of the glass, causing lacerations. There have been two incidents of cracked glass but no injuries reported with this product. The recalled candles are in a martini glass, and are advertised as being for the New Millennium. The box is labeled "The Millennium Martini Scented Candle." The candle is sold in three different fragrances: Raspberry Guava, Passion Floral Fruit and Wine and Roses. The candle is about 11 inches tall with a diameter of 9 inches, and is filled with a gel material. The candle has four wicks. SAMS CLUB stores nationwide sold these candles from October 1999 through November 1999 for about $20. Consumers should stop using these candles immediately and return them to any SAMS CLUB store for a full refund. Neiman Marcus received several reports from consumers, including one where these candles sparked and burned so rapidly that hot wax spilled from the candle onto adjoining surfaces. No injuries were reported.

The gold coating on these candles can ignite, posing a fire hazard. Fashion Bug received a report from a consumer that the gold coating on one of these candles ignited. No injuries or property damage were reported. These gold-colored candles come in the shape of a Christmas tree or cherubs. The tree candle is about 7 inches high, and packaged in a cellophane wrapper. A label on the bottom reads, "Made in China." The cherub candle is about 3 inches high, sold in pairs and packaged in a red box with a gold-colored lid. Fashion Bug and Fashion Bug Plus stores nationwide sold the candles from November 1999 through December 1999 for about $4. Consumers should stop using these candles immediately and return them to any Fashion Bug store for a refund. The candles can burn with a high flame, presenting fire and burn hazards to consumers. A Bath & Body Works store received one report of a candle generating a high flame. No injuries have been reported. The recalled tealight candle has an orange pumpkin face, with yellow eyes, nose and mouth and a green stem. Purple outlines the features on the pumpkin face. The wick is placed above the pumpkin's nose. The candle is contained in an aluminum base. A label on the base of the candle reads in part, "Specially made in China for Bath & Body Works." Bath & Body Works stores nationwide sold the candles throughout September 1999 for about $1. Consumers should stop using the candles immediately, and return the candles to any Bath & Body Works store for a full refund and a $10 gift certificate per customer. The bacteria usually does not affect healthy individuals, but could cause respiratory or other infections in individuals with chronic health problems or in individuals who have impaired immune systems. Benckiser has not received any report of injury associated with this bacteria and these products. Scrub Free Daily Shower Cleaner is sold in a clear plastic, 32- ounce spray bottle. The spray cap is white with a purple screw cap and pull-lever. The front of the bottle shows either a picture of a star fish or an octopus. The Scrub Free Daily Shower Spray is sold in white plastic, 32-ounce spray bottles and 64-ounce refill bottles. "Just Mist for Self-Cleaning Action!" is written on the label. The 32-ounce spray bottles also were sold with the refill bottles attached as a special promotion. Supermarket, drug and discount department stores nationwide sold the affected lots of Scrub Free Daily Shower Cleaner and Scrub Free Daily Shower Spray from May 1999 through October 4, 1999 for about $2 to $4. Consumers should immediately stop using Scrub Free Daily Shower Cleaner and Scrub Free Daily Shower Spray purchased prior to October 5, 1999. Shower enclosures that have been sprayed with these products should be washed with a diluted solution of vinegar (one part vinegar to two parts water). Consumers should call Benckiser at (800) 286-9055 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET Monday through Friday to receive a coupon for a free replacement bottle of any Scrub Free product. Consumers will need to provide information from their bottle of shower cleaner to get the coupon, and should then throw away the bottle of cleaner. Announce Recall of Olympic Deck Cleaner WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), PPG Architectural Finishes (PPGAF) is voluntarily recalling about 420,000 jugs of Olympic Deck Cleaner. Caps used to seal the plastic jugs can allow air pressure to build up and cause the cleaner to seep past the cap or be expelled when the cap is removed. Eye damage or skin irritation could occur from direct contact with the product. PPGAF has received one consumer report and three reports from stores that noticed that containers of the deck cleaner had bulged or seeped. No injuries have been reported. The recalled Olympic Deck Cleaner was sold in 1-gallon and 2.5-gallon sizes. The beige jug has a green cap. The recalled deck cleaner has batch codes beginning with: 06C, 07C, 08C, 09C, 10C, 11C, 12C, 01D, 02D, 03D, 04D, 05D and 06D. The batch code is stamped on the back of the jug above the use instruction label. The label reads, in part, "OLYMPIC DECK CLEANER," "RESTORES THE CLEAN, NATURAL LOOK," and "FAST & EASY TO USE." The deck cleaner was sold at home improvement centers, hardware stores, and lumber yards nationwide from June 1998 through June 1999 for $7 to $9 for the 1-gallon jug and $14 to $16 for the 2.5-gallon jug. Consumers with this unused deck cleaner should not open the containers, and immediately call PPGAF toll-free at (888) 774-7332 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday for information about obtaining a free replacement cap. Jugs of Olympic Deck Cleaner sold with beige-colored caps are not part of this recall.

Some ladders have steps that are too short and are improperly attached to the ladder. The step can detach from the ladder, causing a consumer to fall. Louisville Ladder has received one report of a ladder's step detaching from the ladder. No injuries have been reported. The ladders being recalled are fiberglass Type 1A stepladders in lengths of 6 feet (model R-3011-06), 8 feet (model R-3011-08) and 10 feet (model R-3011-10). The ladders have a red plastic top and gray railings. The brand name RIDGID appears on the plastic top and on the sides of the railings. The recalled ladders have manufacture dates listed as April 1999, May 1999, June 1999 and July 1999. The model number and manufacture date are on a white label on the side of the ladder. Home Depot stores nationwide sold the ladders from May 1999 through July 1999 for between $119 and $223. Consumers should inspect their ladders to determine if there is a short step that is improperly attached. If so, consumers should stop using the recalled ladders immediately and call Louisville Ladder toll- free at (888) 318-7911 anytime or access their web site at www.ridgidladder.com/notice.htm. The company will help consumers determine if the steps are attached properly. If the steps are not attached properly, they should return the ladders to the nearest Home Depot store for an exchange or refund of the purchase price. Ladders with "OK" marked on the inside of the front rail have been inspected and are not included in this recall.

June 24, 1999 Release # 99-127 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and 15 firms are announcing the recall of more than 19 million dive sticks used in swimming pools. In shallow water, children can fall or land on a dive stick and suffer rectal or vaginal impalement. Facial and eye injuries also are possible when children attempt to retrieve the sticks under water. According to CPSC Chairman Ann Brown, these dives sticks are dangerous and should not be used. CPSC knows of six impalement injuries and one facial injury to children 6 to 9 years old. Although the number of reported incidents is relatively low, the severity of the injuries that have occurred is very significant. Three of the children suffered rectal and three suffered vaginal impalements from dive sticks placed in backyard pools or, in one case, a hot tub. In four of the six incidents, the injuries that occurred required surgery and hospitalization. The facial injury occurred when a child bobbed down to retrieve a dive stick and lacerated her face just below her eye, requiring stitches. The dive sticks being recalled are hard plastic and are either cylinder-shaped or shark-shaped. When dropped into water, the dive sticks sink to the bottom of a pool and stand upright so that children can swim or dive down and retrieve them. The cylinder-shaped plastic sticks measure about 4 to 8 inches long and about 1 inch or less in diameter. The shark-shaped plastic sticks measure about 7 inches long and have an egg-shaped bottom. The sticks come in a variety of colors. Most are packaged in kits of three to six sticks, and some are packaged with other pool diving games. These dive sticks have been sold at grocery, drug, pool and discount department stores nationwide for about $4 to $7 per set under numerous brand names, most of which do not appear on the dive stick itself. Consumers should stop using dive sticks immediately and throw them out.Depending on the sticks owned, consumers can receive a refund, replacement or repair. The angel's head on these candle holders can come into contact with the flame of a candle placed in the holder, posing a fire hazard. Atico has received one report of these candle holders melting, resulting in minor property damage. No injuries have been reported. This angel candle holder is about 6 inches high and made of brass- plated mesh. Its head is a plastic, multifaceted "crystal." It has a tealight candle holder on its back. The packaging of the candle holder includes the writing, "Mesh Candle Holder" and "World Showcase." There is no writing on the candle holder. Eckerd Drug Stores nationwide sold the candle holders between August 1998 and January 1999 for about $4. The burner manifold connection can separate during use, resulting in a flame outside the grill which could burn consumers and ignite nearby combustibles. CPSC is aware of one reported fire outside of a consumer's grill due to the manifold connection separating during use. No injuries were reported. The Tru-Burn Portable LP Gas Grill has a black porcelain paint finish with two chrome-plated wire, steel legs. When assembled, the gas grill is about 18- inches long and 12-inches high. There are three rectangular-shaped handles, one attached to each end of the grill's body and one attached to the lid. The box in which the grill was packaged is labeled with UPC Code 024838170001 and Kmart Code 0-118731-116. Writing on the box includes, "TRU-BURN." Kmart sold these portable grills nationwide through its Kmart stores from February 1996 through August 1998 for about $22. The recalled candles come in galvanized steel, brass, and copper 13 or 23 ounce containers. A label on the bottom of the candle reads in part, "Old Virginia Candle Co...hand-crafted in the USA." Fragrances include cinnamon, french vanilla, lavender, mulberry, peach, strawberry, hollyberry, pine, bayberry, old time vanilla, evergreen, blueberry, gardens, sugar cookie, gingerbread and rum cake. Gift and card stores nationwide sold the candles from July 1996 through April 1998 for between $14 and $18. Calvin Klein Cosmetics is aware of eight reports from consumers of the candles burning with a high flame, resulting in one minor burn injury. These candles were available in two sizes - 2.25 inches high and 1.5 inches high. The large candles were sold separately and in gift sets, while the small candles were given away as samples, gifts with purchases and included in gift sets. Announce Recall of Novelty Lighters WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Kikkerland Designs Inc., of New York, N.Y., is recalling about 20,000 novelty lighters. The lighters do not have any child-resistant mechanisms, as required by the Consumer Product Safety Act. Young children could ignite the lighters, presenting a fire hazard. CPSC and Kikkerland Designs Inc. are not aware of any injuries involving these lighters. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries. The novelty lighters being recalled resemble lamps and flying saucers. The flying saucer lighter, made of silver metal and orange plastic, measures about 3.25 inches in diameter and 1.75 inches high. "UFO" is imprinted in the ignition switch and flashing lights illuminate once the switch is activated. The lamp lighter, with a blue shade, yellow pole and black base, is made of metal and measures about 6.75 inches high. It has no labeling and uses a pull chain as the ignition switch. The flame comes out of the top of the lamp shade. Small retail stores and souvenir shops nationwide sold these lighters from March 1997 through February 1999 for about $10. Consumers should stop using these lighters immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund. The glass pots of these candles can explode or break, causing possible cuts to nearby consumers, and posing a fire hazard. The outer decorative covering of these pots can melt or catch fire. The Body Shop U.S. has received five reports of these candle pots exploding, breaking, melting or burning. No injuries have been reported. These Jewel candles are about 3 inches high and come in two fragrances: mulled berries and brandied apples. The mulled berries candles have purple resin covering its glass pot. The brandied apple candles have red resin covering its glass pot. On both types of candles, tiny glass-headed decorative beads are imbedded in the resin. A dozen three-quarter-inch "jewels" of various colors also are set around the outside of the pot, inbedded in the resin. A sticker on the bottom of the candle reads, "THE BODY SHOP." A clear, plastic disk that is around the wick when the candle is sold reads, "fragranced jewel candle" . . . "POT MADE IN CHINA FILLED IN UK." The Body Shop stores nationwide sold these candles from September 1998 through December 1998 for about $10. Consumers should immediately stop using these candles and return them to any Body Shop store for a refund. When a baby stands up in the crib, the mattress can compress and be pushed between the bars on the crib's platform. The baby can slip between the bars on the crib's platform and become entrapped. Cosco has received 12 complaints of mattresses compressing and entrapping babies. An 11-month old baby boy died after becoming entrapped. Cosco is offering consumers a $25 check for consumers to purchase a new mattress on their own. The mattresses were sold with Cosco model "M" tubular metal cribs, manufactured from July 1994 through September 1997. The "M" is the third character in the model number. The model number and manufacturing date are stamped on a label on the bottom of the crib's end panel. The cribs come in a variety of colors, including red, white, mixed primary and mixed pastels. "Cosco" is written on the crib's label and on the mattress' tag. The date of delivery also is written on the mattress' tag. Mass merchandise and juvenile products stores nationwide sold these cribs and mattresses for up to $150. Consumers should immediately stop using the crib or place a board, measuring 51 5/8 inches long by 27 1/4 inches wide, between the crib's mattress and platform. Consumers should contact Cosco at (800) 221-6736 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. EST Monday through Friday or at www.coscoinc.com to participate in this recall. Cosco will help consumers identify whether their cribs are involved in this recall. Once they get the new mattress, they should destroy the old mattress by cutting it into at least three pieces. Cosco model "M" cribs manufactured after September 1997 have a different mattress and model "T" cribs are sold without mattresses. Neither of these cribs are involved in this recall. The power cords on these vacuums extend out of the very top of the handle, and the cord is often used as an extension of the handle. The power cord can break inside the handle or the casing around the cord can break, and cause shocks or burns to the user's hand. Even when there is no apparent breaking of the casing around the cord, these vacuums can still cause injuries. Electrolux is aware of at least 75 reports of the cords on these vacuums breaking or the casing around the cord exposing wires. About half of these incidents reportedly resulted in burns or shocks to users. Of these reports, there were 11 serious injuries which included consumers suffering second or third degree burns, shocks, or a combination of these injuries. The Ponytail vacuums were sold under the following names: Genesis Prolux S/R Genesis LX Prolux Warehouse Genesis LXE Regency Prolux Special Edition Prolux Plus Only Electrolux upright vacuums with the cord coming out of the very top of the handle are included in this recall. "Electrolux" and the model name are written on each vacuum. Most of these vacuums were sold through direct sales and retail stores, including Sam's Club, Service Merchandise and Macy's, between May 1991 and September 1993 for between $150 and $550, depending on the model and accessories. Some vacuums were sold directly to corporate customers. Consumers should immediately stop using these vacuums, and return them to an Electrolux store for a free repair. The handle on the vacuum will be replaced with a new model handle.
