Announce Recall to Repair "Le Cradle" Bassinets WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Kids Line Inc., of Los Angeles, Calif., is voluntarily recalling for repair about 46,000 Le Cradle bassinets. Infants can become entrapped in an opening between the bassinet's side and mattress platform and suffocate. Additionally, fabric can separate from the metal frame. Infants can be injured when they scrape against or become caught in the frame. Kids Line has received one report of a 3-month-old boy in Oakland Park, Fla. who died when he suffocated after becoming trapped between the bassinet's side and mattress platform. Three other infants were scraped and bruised from contact with the metal frame that became exposed when the fabric separated from the frame. Kids Line is offering a free in-home repair kit, designed to secure the fabric around the bassinet to prevent entrapments and exposure to the metal frame. The recalled bassinets were sold under the name "Le Cradle Bassinette." The bassinet has a white metal base with wheels and a removable canopy. The oval bassinet itself is made up of a metal wire frame and a wooden base board that rests on the metal base. A sticker on the mattress platform gives instructions for use of the bassinet and says, "Le Cradle, Kids Line, Los Angeles, California." A fabric-covered foam mattress covers the wooden board. Matching fabric covers the bassinet frame, and comes in various colors and designs. Children's products stores nationwide sold the bassinets from January 1989 through May 2000 for between $100 and $200. Consumers should stop using the bassinets immediately and contact Kids Line for a free in-home repair kit. Consumers should call Kids Line toll-free at (866) LECRADL (532-7235) anytime. Announce Recall of Starting Fluid WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), The Penray Companies Inc., of Wheeling, Ill., is recalling about 113,000 cans of starting fluid, which is a lubricant to aid starting gas and diesel engines. The cans containing the starting fluid can leak as a result of internal to external corrosion. The starting fluid is extremely flammable and the leaking fluid poses a fire hazard. Direct contact with the product also can irritate the consumer's eyes and skin.Penray has received three reports of cans of the starting fluid leaking. No injuries have been reported.The recalled starting fluid was sold under the Penray, Super-X and Service Pro brand names in 10.1 ounce cans. The recalled cans have a number printed on the dome of the can ranging from 9305 through 9365. For consumers who purchased the starting fluid by the case, the production date is written on the side of the case. The cans are mostly black with white and red writing and black plastic caps. Automobile repair and rebuild shops sold the starting fluid nationwide from November 1999 through August 2000 for $2 to $3.Consumers should stop using the recalled starting fluid immediately. Place it in a well-ventilated area away from sparks or flames. CPSC, Safety 1st Announce Recall to Repair Baby Walkers WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Safety 1st Inc., of Canton, Mass., is voluntarily recalling to repair about 170,000 Mobile "4 Wheelin" Walkers, which are shaped like cars. Babies can lose their lower teeth when the teeth are caught in parts of the three-spoke steering wheels. Also, on some of these walkers, the telephone could break apart, releasing small parts and posing a choking hazard. Safety 1st has received eight reports of babies catching their teeth in parts of the three-spoke steering wheels. Six babies lost lower front teeth. There also are 44 reports of the telephone button loosening. One 6-month-old baby girl gagged on a telephone button from a phone that came apart. The Mobile "4 Wheelin" Walker is intended for babies 6 months old until the age they begin to walk. The walker has a green body, and includes a three-spoke steering wheel with squeaking horn, clicking keys, two rearview mirrors and a phone with electronic ring. Model number 45701, 45701A or 45701B is written underneath the walker tray. Only walkers with these model numbers are part of the recall. Other writing under the body includes, "Made in the U.S.A.,(1997," and "Safety 1st, Inc." Mass merchandise, juvenile products and major discount department stores nationwide sold the walkers from April 1998 through April 1999 for about $50. The mask's glass lens can break into sharp pieces, causing lacerations to a child's face, eyes or hands. Kmart has received one report of the glass lens shattering. No injuries have been reported. The "Splash Club" Aquatic Child's Swim Mask is made of either purple, aqua or lime-green plastic. It has a clear glass lens and an adjustable head strap. "Tempered Splash Club Glass" is written on the mask. The mask is packaged in clear plastic with a cardboard insert labeled "Splash Club Aquatic Child's Swim Mask." The following UPC code is on the package: 072000 72970 0. The mask was made in China. Kmart and Super Kmart stores nationwide sold the swim masks from February 2000 to July 2000 for about $3. Announce Recall to Replace Gun Locks WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Master Lock Co., of Milwaukee, Wis., is voluntarily recalling about 752,000 gun locks and providing free replacements to consumers. Due to a manufacturing discrepancy, the two halves of some gun locks can be manually separated without a key, giving children and others unauthorized access to a firearm. Master Lock reports it has not received any consumer reports of locks being disabled as a result of this discrepancy. This recall is being conducted by Master Lock to prevent the possibility of injury. The locks being recalled are keyed, trigger gun locks sold separately or in combination with certain Smith & Wesson and Walther handguns. The recalled gun locks were available for sale after June 20, 1999, and are either black or blue metal. Each half of the lock surrounds the trigger with a 1-inch locking post connecting them. The words, "Master Lock Tough Under Fire" are imprinted on the lock's black rubber pad. Affixed to the lock is a yellow sticker which reads, "Warning! Do Not Use On A Loaded Gun!" Master Lock brand gun locks sold separately were packaged with a green and black cardboard display card and with instruction sheets inside the package. Smith & Wesson gun locks were sold under its own name, and were packaged with blue display cards and instruction sheets inside the package. Model numbers found on the instruction sheets or packaging are 90, 90DSPT, 90KADSPT, 90TSPT, 90DS&W, 90KADS&W or 90TS&W. The words, "Made to exclusive Master Lock specifications in China" are on the back of the packaging. Stores, such as Walmart, Kmart, Gander Mountain and Sports Authority, sold the gun locks nationwide between June 1999 and July 2000 for between $8 and $12. Consumers should stop using the recalled locks immediately and call Master Lock at (800) 308-9242 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday to receive a free replacement lock. As always, consumers are reminded not to use gun locks on loaded guns. Until the replacement lock is received, consumers should not use the recalled gun locks. Master Lock urges consumers to comply with all state and local laws requiring the use of gun locking devices. When bent, these teething rings can fit into an infant's mouth and trigger a gagging reflex. This poses a risk of vomiting, which could result in choking and aspiration. Whitehall-Robins Healthcare has received two reports from consumers of children gagging on the teething rings, including one report of a child starting to choke. These teethers were sold with .25 oz. tubes of Baby Anbesol® Grape Gel, an oral anesthetic. The teethers are yellow and shaped like rabbits. They are about 3 inches long and 2.25 inches high. Two holes are molded into the teething ring for infants to grasp. The packaging reads, "THE BABY'S TEETHING KIT," and "FAST TEETHING PAIN RELIEF." Mass merchandise, drug and grocery stores nationwide sold Baby Anbesol with these teethers from May 1999 through June 2000 for about $6. Consumers should take these teething rings away from infants immediately. Studio Store, of Burbank, Calif., (Warner Bros. Store) is recalling about 3,800 Tweety rattles and 1,000 pairs of Tweety sandals. Both products are being recalled because small parts of each product can detach and pose a choking hazard to young children. CPSC and Warner Bros. Studio Store have received three reports of parents removing detached parts of sandals and a rattle from their babies' mouths. No injuries have been reported. Rattle Recall The rattle is sold as part of a Tweety Bib, Rattle and Spoon Set. The rattle, which is covered with a yellow cloth and is approximately 5 inches long, is a Tweety image and has a small blue and white bib (about 1.5 inches wide and 1.4 inches long) tied around Tweety's neck. Tweety's bib can detach, posing a choking hazard to a young child. Warner Bros. Stores nationwide sold the Tweety Bib, Rattle and Spoon Sets from August 1998 through January 2000 for about $15. Sandals Recall The Tweety sandals are girls' jelly swimwear sandals made of transparent pink plastic with embedded sparkles and a picture on the inside soles of Tweety sitting on flowers. The sandals were sold in infant sizes from 3 to 15 months. The sandals have three round plastic flowers on the top surface. The flowers can detach, posing a choking hazard to a young child. Warner Bros. Stores nationwide sold the sandals from February 2000 through April 2000 for about $10. Consumers should take these products away from children immediately and return them to a Warner Bros. Store for a refund. The smoke alarms can fail to alarm when smoke or fire is present. A capacitor in the alarm can burn out, releasing smoke and melting the cover. Universal has received three reports of alarms failing, releasing smoke. There has been one report of minor smoke damage to the wall of a mobile home. No injuries have been reported. Consumers can identify the recalled models by removing the alarm cover from its base and looking for the manufacture date code and model number. The smoke alarms are made of white plastic and have the manufacture date code and model number imprinted on the back of the alarm. Because of the high-pressure contents of these fire extinguishers, they can explode and expose consumers to flying debris, causing puncture wounds and blast injuries. CPSC and the firm have received five reports of the fire extinguisher exploding in consumers' homes. One consumer was hit by flying debris, but was not injured. The explosions have resulted in property damage. The fire extinguisher is yellow with a black top and a red spout. "FIRESTOPPER" is written on the side of the extinguisher in orange. The "I" in the name is written to resemble a flame. Other writing on the unit includes "ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE," "NON-TOXIC," "The Portable Liquid Fire Extinguisher," and "MADE IN THE USA." The extinguisher is about 10 inches high and the net weight is 12 ounces. The product was originally marketed by Bombay Productions Inc. in California. Dollar-type discount stores, including Only Deals and Bargain Wholesale, and wholesalers sold these fire extinguishers nationwide from January 1999 through February 2000 for between $.99 and $4. Consumers should discharge these fire extinguishers into a plastic garbage bag or similar container outside, in an open area. Consumers can return the discharged units to the store where purchased for a refund. Announce Recall of Weed Trimmer Heads With Metal Chains WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Weed Wizard Acquisition Corp., of Bradley, Mich., voluntarily recalled about 2.7 million Weed Wizard trimmer heads with metal chains and about 857,000 trimmer replacement chain sets. The end link of the trimmer's metal chain can rapidly and unexpectedly detach during use, propelling the link into the air at a high velocity. If the metal link strikes the user or a bystander, it can penetrate skin and bone, causing injury or death. Weed Wizard and CPSC have received 47 reports of metal links detaching from trimmers, resulting in 41injuries, including the death of a 3-year-old girl in Alabama who was struck in the head by a metal link. The injuries included users and bystanders being struck by metal links in the head, neck, legs, ankles and feet, resulting in penetration wounds and lacerations. The Weed Wizard being recalled replaces the string trimmer head with a metal chain trimmer head on a gas-powered weed trimmer. Only Weed Wizard trimmer heads with metal chains are part of this recall. They were sold with white replacement heads and black chains, yellow heads with black chains or yellow heads with silver chains. There is no writing on the Weed Wizard trimmer heads, but the packaging reads "Weed Wizard", "The Solution to Trimmer Line Problems", "Fits 99% of All Gas Trimmers" and "MADE IN U.S.A." Home centers, mass merchants, discount stores, hardware stores and television advertisements nationwide sold Weed Wizards with metal chains from May 1987 through April 2000 for between $19 and $25. The replacement chain kits were sold from January 1992 through April 2000 for about $8. Consumers should stop using the Weed Wizards with metal chains immediately and discard or destroy the product. Announce Recall of Homelite® Handheld Power Blowers/Vacuums WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), John Deere Consumer Products Inc., of Charlotte, N.C., is voluntarily recalling about 200,000 Homelite® handheld power blowers/vacuums. The fuel line location can cause it to contact the edge of the engine shroud, causing the line to prematurely wear. This can result in a gasoline leak, presenting a fire hazard and causing burn injuries to consumers. John Deere Consumer Products has received two reports of the fuel line leaking from these power blowers/vacuums. There have been no reports of fires or injuries. Inc., of Torrance, Calif., is recalling about 112,000 lawnmowers. The lawnmowers' fuel tanks' seam can split or crack, leaking fuel, and creating a fire and burn hazard to consumers. American Honda Motor Co. has 25 reports of fuel leaking from these lawnmowers. There have been no fires or injuries reported. The recall involves Harmony II walk-behind mowers with model numbers HRT216, HRR216 and HRS216. "Harmony II" and the model number are written on the front of the lawnmowers. The recalled mowers have an engine serial number between 1128495 and 1438098. The engine serial number is located under the fan cover, stamped into the engine case. The lawnmowers are dark gray with red fan covers. "HONDA" is written on the top of the fan casing. Honda power equipment dealers and The Home Depot sold the lawnmowers nationwide from May 1998 through January 2000 for about $430. Consumers should stop using these lawnmowers immediately, and check to see if the gas tank is leaking. If there is a leak, immediately move the mower away from any possible ignition sources, for example, water heaters or electric appliances. Empty the fuel tank by following owner manual instructions. About 105,000 "3-in-1 Cradle Swings" with detachable carriers are being recalled, along with 235,000 "Bounce 'n Play Activity Domes." Recall of 3-in-1 Cradle Swing With Detachable Carrier The 3-in-1 Cradle Swing has a detachable seat that can be used as a carrier. When used as a carrier, the locks for the handle can unexpectedly release, causing the seat to flip forward. When this happens, infants can fall to the ground and suffer serious injuries. There have been 28 reports of the carrier's handle unexpectedly releasing when used as a carrier, resulting in injuries to 10 infants. The injuries include a skull fracture, bumps, bruises and scrapes to the head. According to the reports, some injuries occurred to infants who were restrained in the seat. The recalled Fisher-Price 3-in-1 Cradle Swings are model numbers 79321 and 79322. The model number is on the underside of the motor housing and on the bottom of the seat. "Fisher-Price" is on the front of the motor's housing and on the bottom of the seat. Only swings with detachable carriers are included in this recall. Mass merchandise, juvenile products and major discount stores sold the 3-in-1 Cradle Swings nationwide from March 1997 through January 1999 for about $100. Consumers should stop using the swing's seat as a carrier immediately. Fisher-Price will provide a free repair kit that will lock the carrier's handle in place. The repair can be done quickly and easily in the home. Consumers can continue to use the seat as intended as a cradle swing. Fisher-Price Cradle Swings that do not have a detachable carrier (model numbers 79454, 79456 and 79386) are not included in this recall. Recall of Bounce 'n Play? Activity Dome The Bounce 'n Play Activity Dome is a portable play and nap space for indoor and outdoor use. The product resembles a pop up tent. It features a zippered canopy attached to a raised metal frame that suspends the play and nap surface so that it can bounce. The nylon bands that hold the surface level can detach allowing the surface to tilt. This can cause an infant to slide down against one end and be trapped in a position in which it is difficult to breathe, posing a suffocation hazard. There have been 28 reports of the nylon band detaching and causing the play and nap surface to tilt. No injuries have been reported. To determine if the Bounce 'n Play Activity Dome is part of the recall, check the notice tag on the bottom of the product. Model number 79534 is on the left side of the tag and a 6-character code is on the bottom of the tag. All codes that end with number 8 are included in the recall. All codes that end with number 9 and begin with numbers 001 through 286 are included in the recall. Only products with these codes are recalled. Fisher-Price will help consumers determine if their Activity Dome is recalled. "Fisher-Price" is on the canopy of the product. Some of these futons may fail cigarette ignition resistance tests, in violation of the federal Flammable Fabrics Act, because the boric acid flame retardant inside the futons may not have been evenly disbursed. This could result in burn injuries, should one of these futons catch fire. CPSC and The Standard Mattress Co. are not aware of any fires or injuries involving these futons. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries. The futons being recalled were sold between May 1998 and October 1998 with model numbers 605, 608, 611, and 613, sold under the brand names of Gold Bond, IKEA, and Verlo. The model number and brand name are located on the permanently sewn-in label. The futons come in varied sizes, most of which are full size. Other sizes include king/chair, queen and twin. All are covered in a cotton/polyester fabric in a natural (off-white) color. Furniture and futon stores nationwide sold the futons from May 1998 through October 1998 for $140 to $250. Announce Recall of Shingling Hatchets WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Ace Hardware Corp., of Oak Brook, Ill., is recalling about 22,000 Ace-brand shingling hatchets. The heads on these tools can detach when in use, striking the user or a bystander and causing serious injury. Ace Hardware Corp. has received two reports of hatchet heads detaching, one of which struck a bystander in the head, resulting in a cut requiring 32 stitches. The hatchet, used to remove and hammer on roof shingles, is about 13-inches long. It has a hickory handle with a leather strap on the end and a forged steel head with a hatchet on one side and a hammering face on the other. The word "ACE" is etched on one side of the tool head and "TAIWAN" is on the other side. These hatchets have item number 2014710, which is printed on a label on the hatchet's handle. Ace Hardware Stores nationwide sold the hatchets from March 1994 through April 2000 for about $18. Consumers should stop using the hatchets immediately and return them to any Ace Hardware Store for a refund.
