Hi-Back "Kidde Kare" Baby Walkers Recalled by Service Merchandise NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 23, 1987 Release # 87-019 Baby Walker Recall WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Service Merchandise Company of Nashville, Tennessee, today announces a voluntary recall of 49,000 Hi-Back "Kidde Kare" Infant Walkers, Model 106 FLP, which were purchased in Service Merchandise Stores in 1984 and 1985. The models involved have a white vinyl binding tape on the edges of the crotch strap. The hazard involves slippage of the strap through the buckle which secures the front of the walker's seat to its deck. This slippage could result in infant entrapment or injury. The Commission and Service Merchandise are aware of at least 5 incidents involving seat strap slippage, one of which was associated with an infant death. Service Merchandise is offering a free replacement seat at no charge to the consumer and urges all owners of the Model 106 FLP walker to participate in the recall. The model number is located on the ID tag on the seat. To obtain a free replacement seat call toll-free 1-800-251-1389. Tennessee residents may call toll-free l-800-251-1212. Consumers may also write to: Service Merchandise Company, P.O. Box 24600, Nashville, Tennessee 37202 and request a replacement seat for their walker. Additional information may also be obtained by calling the Consumer Product Safety Commission toll-free hotline number at 800-638-CPSC.
