Inc., of Vandalia, Ohio, is recalling about 3.4 million Joyride® infant car seats/carriers. When the seat is used as an infant carrier, the handle can unexpectedly release, causing the seat to flip forward. When this happens, an infant inside the carrier can fall to the ground and suffer serious injuries. There have been 240 reports, in the United States, of handles unexpectedly releasing, resulting in 97 injuries. These reports include skull fractures, concussions, a broken leg, and numerous scratches and bruises."Evenflo is offering a free repair to prevent the seat from flipping forward," said CPSC Chairman Ann Brown. "It's an easy repair to make, and it is designed to protect your baby from a very serious injury.""Riding in a car seat in the vehicle's rear seat is the safest way to transport young children in a motor vehicle," said NHTSA Executive Director Bob Shelton. "The recall announced today is related to only using the seat as a carrier and not to how the seat performs while in a car. Parents should continue to use these carriers as car seats."The recall involves all Evenflo Joyride® car seats/carriers, which are white or gray plastic with seat pads of various colors and patterns. "Evenflo Joyride Car Seat/Carrier" is written on the outside of the handle locks. The seats have model numbers beginning with 203, 205, 210, 435 or 493, which can be found on a label underneath or on the side the car seat/carrier.Juvenile product, mass merchandise and major discount stores nationwide sold the car seats/carriers from January 1988 through December 1998 for about $30 when sold alone, $48 when sold as a Travel Tandem® (with a detachable convenience base), and $89 when sold with a matching stroller.Evenflo will provide consumers with a free easy-to-install repair kit that helps secure the handle. Consumers should not carry the seat by the handle until it has been repaired. Announce Recall of MARTHA STEWART EVERYDAY® Brand Tea Kettles WASHINGTON, D.C.- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Kmart Corp., of Troy, Mich., is recalling about 24,000 MARTHA STEWART EVERYDAY® brand tea kettles. Boiling water can be expelled from the kettle's spout, presenting a burn hazard to consumers. Kmart has received 14 reports of boiling water being expelled, resulting in three minor burn injuries. The recalled tea kettles were sold under the MARTHA STEWART EVERYDAY brand name, and are stainless steel or white, sage, or slate colored porcelain. The words, "MSE Thailand" are printed on the knob attached to the lid of the kettle. Kmart sold the tea kettles nationwide from October 2000 through March 2001 for about $25 to $30. Consumers should stop using these tea kettles immediately and return them to any Kmart store for a refund. Announce Recall of Kid's Meal Toys WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Creative Consumer Concepts Inc., of Overland Park, Kan., and Whataburger Inc., of Corpus Christi, Texas, are voluntarily recalling about 330,000 "Whatagear" compass toys. Creative Consumer Concepts Inc. manufactured these toys, which were distributed with kids' meals at Whataburger Restaurants. The clear, plastic lens covers on these compass toys can come off and pose a choking hazard to young children.Creative Consumer Concepts, Inc. has received four reports of the lens covers of the compass toys coming off. No injuries have been reported.The "Whatagear" compass is a plastic toy with a compass in its center. The toys have varied features, such as flashlights, magnifying lenses or tools. They come in various solid colors. Announce Recall of Wrestling Ear Guards WASHINGTON, D.C.- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), ASICS TIGER Corp., of Irvine, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 60,000 ear guards used in wrestling. The plastic protective shell of these guards can break when it is hit against a hard surface, resulting in impact injuries to the wrestler's head.ASICS TIGER Corp. has received 10 reports of the plastic shells of these guards breaking, resulting in three injuries. The injuries reported include cuts and abrasions to the side of the head and ear.The recall involves ASIC Gel Wrestling Ear Guard with Neoprene. The guard includes two plastic ear pieces covered with neoprene nylon. The ASICS red logo is on a label on the guard's strap. A gold label inside the guard reads, "MADE IN CHINA." A date code can be found written on the neoprene nylon underneath the outer rim of the ear piece. The recalled guards have date codes beginning with "98" or "99." The guards are white, red, purple, black, navy blue, royal blue, green or gold.Sports specialty and team sport stores, and team sport catalogs sold these guards nationwide from June 1998 through March 2001 for about $25.Consumers should stop using these ear guards immediately, and return them to the store where purchased or to the firm for a free replacement. The front-suspension forks on these bicycles can break during use, resulting in serious injury.Dynacraft has received 33 reports of the front-suspension forks on these bicycles breaking, resulting in 32 injuries that included a blood clot in the brain, broken bones, cuts, bruises and chipped teeth.These 20-inch, 21-speed, dual-suspension bicycles have the model name "NEXT SHOCKZONE" written on their orange frame in black lettering. A label on the frame near the crank housing reads, "Distributed by Dynacraft Industries" and "Made in China." Only the orange bicycles with model number 8536-33 are included in this recall. The model number is written on another label on the frame near the crank housing.Wal-Mart stores sold these bicycles nationwide from September 1999 through March 2001 for about $130.Consumers should stop using these bicycles immediately, and call Dynacraft to receive a free replacement fork and to arrange for free installation. Fabric used in these costumes can ignite readily and presents a serious risk of burn injuries in violation of the Federal Flammable Fabrics Act.CPSC and Disney are aware of two reports of costumes igniting, resulting in one burn injury to a 4-year-old girl.The Princess Ariel costume has a green skirt with two layers of netting on top and a sequined purple metallic bodice with a picture of Ariel. The costumes were sold in youth sizes 2-4, 4-6X and 8-10. The neckline labels read "The Disney Store."The Disney Store sold the costumes for Halloween from July 2000 through October 2000. The Disney Store catalog and DisneyStore.com sold the costumes from July 2000 through January 2001. Announce Recall of Goldstar, General Electric, and Sears Kenmore Dehumidifiers WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), LG Electronics Inc., of Seoul, South Korea, is voluntarily recalling about 100,000 Goldstar, General Electric, and Sears Kenmore portable dehumidifiers. These dehumidifiers have an internal electrical connection that can overheat, presenting a potential fire hazard to consumers.LG Electronics has received seven reports of dehumidifiers overheating, including four reports of fire within the units, with smoke damage to surrounding objects. No injuries have been reported. The recalled dehumidifiers are white, with a red auto shut off button, and regulators for fan speed and humidity control. The dehumidifiers were manufactured between November 1998 and May 1999, and have the following brand names and model numbers: Goldstar DH2510, DH4010 and DH5010; General Electric AHG25LAG1, AHG40LAG1 and AHG50LAG1; and Sears Kenmore 580.59600890 (60-pint model only). The brand name is located to the left of the control unit. Cable Light Switches - Light Tech, of Grand Rapids, Mich., is recalling about 350,000 on/off switches that were included in cable lights packages. "Cable lights," also known as rope lights, are lights inside a plastic cord used for decorative lighting. The on/off switches for the cable lights were included as an optional accessory for consumers to attach to the power cords. They consist of a rectangular white plastic box about 1¼ inches long. The box contains a wheel-type switch through the middle that rotates to turn the power on and off. The switches were included in 36-inch and 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24-foot lengths in power pack kits, which are designed for use with bulk cable lights. The cable lights are clear and have the words "Cable LightsTM" written on the plastic tubing. Home center stores, including Home Depot, Lowe's, and other lighting showrooms, sold these cable light and power cord kits nationwide from September 1997 through October 2000 for about $12 to $65 for the Cable Lights and $7 to $9 for the power cord kits.

The regulator's first stage spring can break causing restricted airflow, posing a drowning hazard to consumers.Atomic Aquatics has received 14 reports of regulator springs breaking, four of which occurred while the scuba equipment was in use. No injuries have been reported.The recalled regulators have a black body with either a gray, blue, red or yellow faceplate. Printed on the faceplate of the regulator are the words, "Atomic Aquatics"; the model name, "Titanium"; and the model number, T1, T1x, B1 or Z1.The regulators were manufactured between May 1999 and October 1999, and have serial numbers that range from A07751 to A11276. The lighters' child-resistant mechanisms are frequently ineffective. Young children are able to operate the lighters, posing a fire hazard. CPSC and Gladstrong Investments have received a report of a 4- year-old girl who died after starting a fire with a Gladstrong Investments lighter and then hid in a closet. The fire caused an estimated $72,000 in damages. In another incident, two brothers, a 4- year-old and a 6-year-old, reportedly ignited clothing and paper inside a car while playing with one of these lighters causing about $1,500 in damages. They were not injured. The recalled lighters have their brand name, "BODA-BING," "GIL," "HAPPY," or "WAX" stamped on both sides of their metal tops. The UPC bar code on the lighters' labels is "0-80692-99930-1," "0-295114-0" or starts with "7-55998." Writing on these lighters includes "MADE IN CHINA." The lighters were sold in various colors. Convenience, drug and discount stores nationwide sold these lighters from January 1998 through February 2001 for about $1. Consumers should stop using these lighters immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. Emergency Lights Recalled by Lithonia Lighting Recall Alert U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 April 13, 2001 Alert #01-514 CPSC, Lithonia Lighting Announce Recall of Emergency Lights PRODUCT: Emergency Lights - Lithonia Lighting, a division of National Service Industries Inc. of Atlanta, Ga., is voluntarily recalling about 1.2 million emergency lights. The ELM and ELM2 emergency lights can be installed in either 120-volt or 277-volt applications. Of the 1.2 million lights, only lights installed in 277-volt applications need to be repaired. These emergency lights could be installed in public buildings such as schools, offices and shopping centers to provide emergency lighting in the event of a power failure. They are typically located near exit doors to aid in building evacuation. They have a black or off-white polycarbonate housing with two incandescent lamps, and are 16-inches wide, 5-inches high, and 4-inches deep. The name "Lithonia" is molded into the housing. The product date code is located on a label inside the front housing. The recalled lights have date codes between 208S13 and 705S13, or between 9208S13 and 9705S13. Lithonia's electrical wholesalers and distributors sold the recalled ELM and ELM2 emergency lights nationwide from August 1992 to May 1997 for between $45 and $65. PROBLEM: The emergency lights have an internal electrical component that could overheat when connected to 277-volt electrical systems and melt the lighting enclosure, posing a fire hazard. INCIDENTS/INJURIES:There have been 16 reports of these lights smoking and overheating causing melted or damaged enclosures. No injuries have been reported. The string can break and release the eggs, posing a choking hazard to young children. CPSC and Tony USA have not received any reports of injuries. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries. The recalled garland is 6-feet long and is made of plastic, egg-shaped beads. The green, yellow, blue, purple, and red beads are connected together by a clear, plastic string. Writing on the packaging reads in part, "Made in China" and "mini 6 Foot Egg Garland." The lighters have child-resistant mechanisms that do not work. Young children could ignite the lighters, presenting fire and burn hazards. CPSC and Fleetwood EXIM Inc. have not received any reports of injuries. This recall is being conducted to prevent that possibility of injuries. The disposable cigarette lighters being recalled are oval tube shaped with a roll and press type ignition mechanism. The lighters have a blue, orange, red or clear transparent case and a chrome metal windshield surrounding the flame port. Stamped into one side of the windshield is the brand name "youjie". A warning label on the back of the lighters reads in part, "WARNING: KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN" and "MADE IN CHINA". Convenience, gas, and grocery stores in the southeastern region of the U.S. sold the recalled cigarette lighters from June 2000 through February 2001 for about $1. Announce Recall of Candles WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Midwest of Cannon Falls Inc., of Cannon Falls, Minn., is voluntarily recalling about 2,000 novelty candles. When the duck- shaped candle burns, the pooling of wax can ignite the paint on the duck, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers. CPSC and Midwest of Cannon Falls have not received any reports of injuries. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The candles are 3 1/2 inches tall and are in the shape of a yellow duck sitting on a green base. The duck has a blue ribbon around its neck, and has an orange beak. A label on the bottom of the candle has the UPC code - 7 38449 38819 8 - and says, "Made in China." CPSC, Fisher-Price Announce Recall of Infant and Toddler Toys WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Fisher-Price, of East Aurora, N.Y., is recalling about 20,000 infant and toddler Intelli-Table toys for repair. Two red knobs on the toy can break off, creating small parts that can pose a choking hazard for young children. Fisher-Price has received 32 reports of the knobs breaking off the toys. A 14-month old child was found with a knob in her mouth. Her mother removed it and no injuries have been reported. The Intelli-Table is a round, plastic activity table with a blue, removable top that uses three interchangeable play rings to help children learn numbers, music, and games. The toy is intended for children ages nine to 36 months. The base of the Intelli-Table is red with three legs that are blue, yellow and teal green. The play rings are colored white, yellow and teal green. The red knobs on the yellow ring and white ring can break off. The toy has a Fisher-Price logo on the blue removable top; and has the model number, 77148, and the words, "Mattel, Inc." and "China," molded into the bottom of the red base. Only models manufactured from September 25, 2000 through October 7, 2000 are being recalled. The recalled models have a date code from 269(0) through 281(0) molded into the underside of the blue, removable top. CPSC, Cosco Inc. and Safety 1st Announce Recall of Bungee Baby Jumpers and Wipe Warmers WASHINGTON, D.C.- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Cosco Inc. (Cosco), of Columbus, Ind., and Safety 1st, of Canton, Mass., are voluntarily recalling about 171,000 bungee baby jumpers and 100,600 baby wipe warmers. The Bungee Baby Jumper allows a baby to bounce while supported in a seat by an elastic "bungee cord," suspended from a doorway. Metal clasps can detach from the bungee cord, causing the unit to fall to the floor. Babies can suffer injuries from the fall. A wipe warmer is an electric appliance that warms baby wipes. Cracks in the interior basin of these wipe warmers can allow moisture to contact the electrical components. Consumers touching the wipes could receive an electrical shock. Cosco Bungee Baby Jumpers Cosco has received 82 reports of the bungee jumper falling to the floor. Fifteen babies suffered bumps, bruises and scratches, the majority of which were to the head. Only model numbers 04-461 and 04-468 are being recalled. The model number is located on the bottom of the tray. Model number 04-461 is the Bungee Jumper and model 04-468 is the Bungee Combo Pack, which consists of the Bungee Jumper and parts to convert the Bungee Jumper to a stationary exerciser. The stationary exerciser, called the Bungee Bouncer Exerciser, is not part of this recall. Both bungee baby jumper models have a multi-colored fabric seat with a white plastic frame with a red foam trim. Three yellow cords connect the seat to a blue plastic strap holder, which says "Cosco." Above the blue plastic strap holder is a thick yellow strap, which connects to a green bungee cord. The bungee cord attaches to a blue door hook. Juvenile product, mass merchandise, discount department and specialty stores nationwide sold the Bungee Baby Jumpers from May 1996 through March 2001 for about $40 to $50. Consumers should stop using the bungee baby jumpers immediately and contact Cosco at (800) 314-9327 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. The repair kit is no longer available. A new cash incentive is being offered. Do not use these products. Please discard or destroy these products. Safety 1st Wipe Warmer Safety 1st has received 17 reports of the interior basin of the wipe warmer cracking. No injuries or shocks have been reported. Only model number 26133 manufactured from December 1999 through January 2001 is being recalled. The manufacturing date, a six-digit code (year, month, day), is on the bottom of the unit written below the box containing "CAUTION" items and the model number. A yellow duck and the words "especially for baby" are located on the lower left corner of the unit. The wipe warmer was sold with a diaper organizer that attaches to the bottom of the unit. Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us stores nationwide sold the wipe warmers from December 1999 through March 2001 for about $20. Consumers should unplug and stop using the wipe warmers immediately and contact Safety 1st to receive a free liner for the interior basin that will prevent cracking.
