Announce Recall of Halloween Pumpkin Tealight Candles Sold at Bath & Body Works WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Universal Candle Co., of China, is voluntarily recalling about 21,000 Halloween pumpkin tealight candles sold at Bath & Body Works. The candles can burn with a high flame, presenting fire and burn hazards to consumers. A Bath & Body Works store received one report of a candle generating a high flame. No injuries have been reported. The recalled tealight candle has an orange pumpkin face, with yellow eyes, nose and mouth and a green stem. Purple outlines the features on the pumpkin face. The wick is placed above the pumpkin's nose. The candle is contained in an aluminum base. A label on the base of the candle reads in part, "Specially made in China for Bath & Body Works." Bath & Body Works stores nationwide sold the candles throughout September 1999 for about $1. Consumers should stop using the candles immediately, and return the candles to any Bath & Body Works store for a full refund and a $10 gift certificate per customer. Spelich, (858) 799-2657 CPSC, Gateway Announce Recall of Foam Rubber Toy Cows WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Gateway Inc., of San Diego, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 1 million foam rubber toy cows. Small pieces of these foam rubber cows can tear away, posing a serious choking hazard to young children. Gateway has received three reports, by consumers in the U.S., of small pieces of these cows tearing away. There have been no reports of any injuries. These cows are white with black spots. They are about 4.5 inches long and 3 inches high. "Gateway" is written in green on the cows' backs. Gateway stores distributed the cows from September 1997 through September 1999 as a give-away with a computer purchase. A small number were sold separately for about $4. Consumers should either throw these cows away immediately or take them to any Gateway Country store location for exchange for another Gateway-brand item of comparable value. The bacteria usually does not affect healthy individuals, but could cause respiratory or other infections in individuals with chronic health problems or in individuals who have impaired immune systems. Benckiser has not received any report of injury associated with this bacteria and these products. Scrub Free Daily Shower Cleaner is sold in a clear plastic, 32- ounce spray bottle. The spray cap is white with a purple screw cap and pull-lever. The front of the bottle shows either a picture of a star fish or an octopus. The Scrub Free Daily Shower Spray is sold in white plastic, 32-ounce spray bottles and 64-ounce refill bottles. "Just Mist for Self-Cleaning Action!" is written on the label. The 32-ounce spray bottles also were sold with the refill bottles attached as a special promotion. Supermarket, drug and discount department stores nationwide sold the affected lots of Scrub Free Daily Shower Cleaner and Scrub Free Daily Shower Spray from May 1999 through October 4, 1999 for about $2 to $4. Consumers should immediately stop using Scrub Free Daily Shower Cleaner and Scrub Free Daily Shower Spray purchased prior to October 5, 1999. Shower enclosures that have been sprayed with these products should be washed with a diluted solution of vinegar (one part vinegar to two parts water). Consumers should call Benckiser at (800) 286-9055 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET Monday through Friday to receive a coupon for a free replacement bottle of any Scrub Free product. Consumers will need to provide information from their bottle of shower cleaner to get the coupon, and should then throw away the bottle of cleaner. Announce Recall of Engines on Outdoor Power Equipment WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Tecumseh Products Co., of Grafton, Wis., is voluntarily recalling about 118,000 engines equipped with a fuel shut- off valve on various brands of outdoor power equipment. Fuel can leak from a small hole in the engine's fuel line, presenting fire and explosion hazards to consumers. Tecumseh Products Co. has received two reports of fuel lines leaking. No injuries have been reported. The Tecumseh engines with fuel shut-off valves that are being recalled have D.O.M. numbers from 9121 through 9233. The D.O.M. number is located on the engine's label. The Tecumseh name is found on the engine and on the engine's label. These engines are primarily on snow blowers. Augers and post hole diggers, log splitters, shredders, irrigators and ventilating fans also have been equipped with these engines. Announce Recall of Olympic Deck Cleaner WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), PPG Architectural Finishes (PPGAF) is voluntarily recalling about 420,000 jugs of Olympic Deck Cleaner. Caps used to seal the plastic jugs can allow air pressure to build up and cause the cleaner to seep past the cap or be expelled when the cap is removed. Eye damage or skin irritation could occur from direct contact with the product. PPGAF has received one consumer report and three reports from stores that noticed that containers of the deck cleaner had bulged or seeped. No injuries have been reported. The recalled Olympic Deck Cleaner was sold in 1-gallon and 2.5-gallon sizes. The beige jug has a green cap. The recalled deck cleaner has batch codes beginning with: 06C, 07C, 08C, 09C, 10C, 11C, 12C, 01D, 02D, 03D, 04D, 05D and 06D. The batch code is stamped on the back of the jug above the use instruction label. The label reads, in part, "OLYMPIC DECK CLEANER," "RESTORES THE CLEAN, NATURAL LOOK," and "FAST & EASY TO USE." The deck cleaner was sold at home improvement centers, hardware stores, and lumber yards nationwide from June 1998 through June 1999 for $7 to $9 for the 1-gallon jug and $14 to $16 for the 2.5-gallon jug. Consumers with this unused deck cleaner should not open the containers, and immediately call PPGAF toll-free at (888) 774-7332 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday for information about obtaining a free replacement cap. Jugs of Olympic Deck Cleaner sold with beige-colored caps are not part of this recall.

Some ladders have steps that are too short and are improperly attached to the ladder. The step can detach from the ladder, causing a consumer to fall. Louisville Ladder has received one report of a ladder's step detaching from the ladder. No injuries have been reported. The ladders being recalled are fiberglass Type 1A stepladders in lengths of 6 feet (model R-3011-06), 8 feet (model R-3011-08) and 10 feet (model R-3011-10). The ladders have a red plastic top and gray railings. The brand name RIDGID appears on the plastic top and on the sides of the railings. The recalled ladders have manufacture dates listed as April 1999, May 1999, June 1999 and July 1999. The model number and manufacture date are on a white label on the side of the ladder. Home Depot stores nationwide sold the ladders from May 1999 through July 1999 for between $119 and $223. Consumers should inspect their ladders to determine if there is a short step that is improperly attached. If so, consumers should stop using the recalled ladders immediately and call Louisville Ladder toll- free at (888) 318-7911 anytime or access their web site at www.ridgidladder.com/notice.htm. The company will help consumers determine if the steps are attached properly. If the steps are not attached properly, they should return the ladders to the nearest Home Depot store for an exchange or refund of the purchase price. Ladders with "OK" marked on the inside of the front rail have been inspected and are not included in this recall.

These distillers can overheat, posing a fire hazard. West Bend has received three reports of these distillers overheating and catching fire. There have been no reports of injuries. The oval-shaped distillers purify water, are made of white plastic, and have a clear, blue collection jug. The housing looks similar to a large automatic coffeemaker. They were sold under various trademarks which are printed on the front of the distillers. These trademarks include Millennium, Mountain Stream, Pure Logic, Sci Can, WaterWise, TIC, Usana, Table Charm, Roex and West Bend. A label on the bottom of the unit has the model number, W10120, and a date code from 9722 to 9848 in black print. Labels with red or gold print are not part of the recall. Direct selling dealers and door-to-door sales representatives nationwide sold these recalled distillers from May 1998 through August 1999 for about $500. Consumers should stop using these water distillers immediately. Consumers should call West Bend to get free pickup and repair of the water distillers. In addition, the company will return each repaired water distiller with three free charcoal post filters and an additional year warranty. These spray strings' propellant is extremely flammable, creating a serious risk of burn injuries when sprayed near an open flame, such as birthday candles. Flammable products intended for use by children are banned by federal law. CPSC is aware of at least one report of a burn injury resulting from the use of these spray strings. An 11-year-old boy suffered serious burns during his birthday party that left permanent scars. Crazy Ribbon sprays strings of various colors, and comes in a round metal spray can about 6.5 inches high. The can is silver with a plastic cap that matches the color of the spray string. Depictions of various colored streamers cover the can. Writing on the can includes "CRAZY RIBBON" in multicolored block letters, "FOR PARTY CELEBRATION AND DECORATION," and "MADE IN TAIWAN." Crazy String also sprays strings of various colors, and comes in a round metal spray can about 6.5 inches high. The can is silver with a plastic cap that matches the color of the spray string. Depictions of various colored streamers cover the can. Writing on the can includes "CRAZY STRING," "FOR PARTY CELEBRATION AND DECORATION," and "MADE IN TAIWAN." Party and hobby stores nationwide sold the spray string from October 1996 through July 1999 for between $2 and $4. The pom-poms on these toys can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children. CPSC and Enesco are aware of three reports of pom-poms detaching from these stuffed toys. No injuries were reported. These stuffed toys include the Lady Bug (476080), Bee (464295), Butterfly (482234) and Reindeer (381969). The pom-poms are the antennae on the heads of the lady bug, bee and butterfly toys. The pom-poms are holiday ornaments on the antlers of the reindeer. The item number can be found on the purple adoption registration attached to the stuffed toys. The Tender Tails(r) toys are about 6 inches long. An attached label reads, in part, "TENDER TAILS®," "by ENESCO" and "MADE IN CHINA." Gift, card and collectible stores sold these stuffed toys nationwide from May 1998 through August 1999 for about $7. Consumers should immediately cut off the pom-poms from these stuffed toys. CPSC, Backyard Products Announce Recall of Trapeze Swings on Backyard Gyms WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Backyard Products, of Ontario, Canada, recalled its 60,000 "Acrobatic Swings," sold with backyard gym sets in the U.S., for in-home repair. These trapeze swings have exposed bolts that cause serious lacerations to children. Backyard Products had received reports of six children suffering severe lacerations that required stitches to the arms from contact with the trapeze bolts. Injuries occurred when children dropped down from the overhead ladder, or fell or climbed onto the exposed bolts. The recalled trapeze swings were sold with Backyard Escapes, Backyard Products and WOW Wooden Play Centers brand gyms. Each gym set comes with various equipment, which can include an overhead ladder, slide, swings, or fort. The trapeze swing has a wooden bar and rings. The wooden bar is attached to the swing chains by a "U-bolt" bracket, whose bolts are too long and extend upward above the nuts. Department, toy, discount, lumber and hardware stores nationwide, Including Toys "R" Us, Service Merchandise, Costco and Sears, sold the gyms with trapeze swings from December 1998 through July 1999 for between $250 to $450. Consumers should remove the trapeze swings from the gyms immediately and discard or destroy them. The firm is out of business and the repair program is no longer available. Inc., of Los Angeles, Calif., is recalling about 78,000 liquid-filled bubble patch t-shirts. The liquid in the vinyl bubble patch contains a petroleum distillate. If the bubble patch is punctured or leaks, the petroleum distillate can be harmful if ingested. CPSC and GUESS? are not aware of any injuries involving these t- shirts. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries. These girls' t-shirts have vinyl bubble patches in three different shapes: a heart, a circle and a rectangle. The heart-shaped bubble measures about 4 inches by 3 inches, has the "GUESS girl!" logo in blue frost, blue bell or red, and contains liquid and glitter. The round- shaped bubble patch, about 4 inches in diameter, has a red heart inside the circle, and is surrounded by blue liquid with the GUESS logo. Two rectangular patches containing dual color liquid of either yellow and blue or purple and blue, with the GUESS logo in black lettering. All the logos are applied to the front of various colored t-shirts. The collar label reads, "GUESS? girls" or "GUESS USA." They were sold in girls sizes small through extra large. GUESS? Inc. and other clothing stores nationwide sold the t-shirts from June 1997 through March 1999 for $10 to $26, depending on the style. Consumers should immediately stop wearing these t-shirts, and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. The oven locking mechanism could unlock prematurely during the self-clean cycle, allowing the oven door to be opened. Burn injuries are possible to consumers if they are exposed to high oven temperatures. Amana has received no reports of injuries with these ranges. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries. These Amana gas ranges have model numbers AGDS901E and AGDS901WW located on the left side of the range below the oven and behind the utility drawer. The ranges are gas-fueled, slide-in models. The top cooking surface has two gas burners on the left side, a gas grill on the right side and the down draft vent in between. The ranges come in either in black or white. The name, "Amana" is written above the clock of these ranges. Major department and appliance stores sold the gas ranges nationwide from October 1995 to July 1999 for between $1,500 and $1,600. Consumers with these ranges should not use the self-cleaning feature, but can continue to use their ranges for cooking. The suction cups can detach, presenting a choking hazard to young children. Graco has received four reports of children starting to choke after putting the suction cups in their mouths, including one that required use of the Heimlich maneuver. The activity trays and bath sets being recalled are the Graco® and Children On The Go® brand Stroller Snack and Activity Trays, Bathtime Activity Trays, and Bathtime Toy Netting products. The activity trays attach with suction cups to tiled or smooth surfaces. There are four toys attached to each tray. The tray toys are removable and interchangeable with other Mix 'N MoveTM toys, which are purchased separately. The Stroller Snack and Activity Tray's toys include a toucan, rolling ball, star and dog. The Bathtime Activity Tray's toys include an octopus, u-tube, spinning ball and paddlewheel. "Graco" or "Children On The Go" is on the underside of the tray. The robes fail to meet federal flammability standards for children's sleepwear. The standards require sleepwear, including robes, to be flame resistant, and if the garment ignites, the flame must self-extinguish. Failure to meet the flammability standards presents a risk of serious burn injuries to children. CPSC and these firms are not aware of any injuries involving these robes. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. "Esleep Juniors," and "Made in Bangladesh" are written on labels on the collar of these robes. The robes have chest patches showing either a pair of bear cubs or a sleeping puppy. They are made of polyester, either blue or green, and were sold in sizes four through 14. The robes are long-sleeve robes with patch pockets. They have one of the following GPU numbers located on a collar tag: 9816, 9817, 9818, 9885, 9886, 9890 and 9891. JC Penney stores nationwide sold these robes from July 1998 through April 1999 for about $25. Consumers should stop using these recalled robes immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund.
