Chenille Sweaters Recall NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Ken Giles December 18, 1996 (301) 504-7052 Release # 97-046 CPSC Recalls Highly Flammable Chenille Sweaters WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today the stop sale and recall of more than 32,000 dangerously flammable chenille sweaters sized for girls and women. The sale of these sweaters violates the federal Flammable Fabrics Act, and the sweaters present a serious risk of burn injuries. In fact, these sweaters burn faster than newspaper. Although CPSC has not received reports of injuries from these sweaters to date, the agency is issuing this safety notice and recalling the sweaters to prevent injuries from these dangerous products. The sweaters, which were made in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States, are made in a variety of colors of very soft textured chenille. Sweater styles are primarily long sleeved or short sleeved with a crew or turtle neckline; although, there is also a v-neck vest style and a mock wrap style. The sweaters sold for between $38 and $130 at large department stores and small boutiques nationwide. Nearly all of these sweaters are made of 65 percent rayon/35 percent nylon; although, a few styles are made of 90 percent rayon/10 percent nylon, 67 percent rayon/33 percent nylon, or 100 percent rayon. CPSC is working with a number of importers and retailers to recall these sweaters. CPSC surveyed over 100 retail stores in major U.S. cities to test for the fire hazard. CPSC urges consumers to immediately stop wearing sweaters they believe may be involved in this recall. These flammable sweaters should be returned to the retailers where purchased. Retailers taking part in this recall will provide a refund or credit. Holiday Candle Holders & Potpourri Pots Recall NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Ken Giles December 17, 1996 (301) 504-7052 Release # 97-044 CPSC and Importers Announce Recall of Holiday Candle Holders and Potpourri Simmer Pots WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), two importers are recalling more than 32,000 Santa candle holders and potpourri simmer pots posing fire hazards. The paint on the Santa candle holders is flammable and the candle accompanying the potpourri simmer pots generates an excessive flame. An additional importer is issuing a warning about a candle that poses a potential fire hazard. The importers participating in this recall are Division Sales Inc. of Itasca, Ill., and New Design Inc. of Buffalo Grove, Ill. Giftco Inc. of Buffalo Grove, Ill., is the importer issuing the warning. Division Sales Recall Division Sales Inc. is recalling about 10,000 ceramic Santa Claus Candle Holders, item 66539. The holder, measuring 5.5 inches high, has an opening in the back for a wax candle. The Santa figure is predominantly red and white with star-shaped openings in the back and front and a label on the bottom that reads, "MADE IN CHINA." The Santas are holding sacks, lanterns, dolls, cats, or dogs. The candle holders were sold through dollar-type stores nationwide from October 1995 through November 1996 for about $1. Division Sales is not aware of any injuries involving these candle holders. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled candle holders, and return the holders to the store where purchased for a refund. For more information, consumers can call Division Sales at (800) 621-8134. New Design Inc. Recall New Design Inc. is recalling about 22,000 porcelain Potpourri Simmer Pots. The potpourri simmer pots, measuring 5.5 inches high, come shaped as an angel, santa bear, or snowman. New Design has received four reports of the candle accompanying the pot flaming excessively. No injuries have been reported, but three of the reports involved minor property damage. The pots were sold through retail outlets nationwide during the Fall of 1996 for about $3. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled pots, and return the pots to the store where purchased for a refund. For more information, consumers can call New Design Inc. collect at (847) 459-5655. Giftco Inc. Warning Giftco Inc. is warning consumers about the candles in 29,000 Candy House Candle Holders. Some of the holders, measuring 4.5 inches high, were shipped with a defective votive candle that reportedly generates an excessive flame. The candle holders were sold through various fund-raising organizations nationwide during the Fall of 1996 for about $10. Giftco has received two reports of the defective candle setting the candle holder on fire. No injuries have been reported. Consumers should immediately discard the votive candle accompanying the candle holder. The lights have no fuse protection and contain inadequate wiring presenting a fire hazard. The manufacturers participating in this recall are Thrifty Distributors and Golden Bay Enterprises, both of Hempstead, N.Y. CPSC and these manufacturers are not aware of any fires or injuries involving these lights. These recalls are being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Thrifty Distributors Recall Thrifty Distributors is recalling the following lights, about 225 sets, which can be identified by the following labeling on the box top: "35/2-WAY FLASHER/LIGHT SET - 35 JUEGO DE LUCES DE NAVIDAD-Pretested! Guaranteed to light! Weatherproof! Energy Saver! Replacement Bulbs! - Swallow Brand." "Christmas TREE-TOP DECORATION - REPLACEABLE PUSH-IN BULBS - PRE-TESTED GUARANTEED TO LIGHT." Thrifty Distributors sold the lights in discount and dollar-type stores in the Greater New York and Philadelphia areas within the last few weeks for about $1. Golden Bay Enterprises sold the lights in discount stores in Florida from October through December 1996 for about $1. Consumers should stop using the recalled lights immediately, and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund. CPSC is recommending that consumers use the following light safety suggestions to ensure this holiday season is a safe and happy one. Look for a label stating that the lights were tested by a recognized testing laboratory. Check for fuses that guard against overload. An overload could cause a fire. Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, loose connections, and loose or missing bulbs. Replace defective bulbs, and if a set is damaged, do not buy or use the set.
Houdini Portable Playyards Hazard NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Nychelle White December 17, 1996 (301) 504-7063 Release # 97-047 CPSC and Evenflo Warn of Potential Choking Hazard on Houdini Portable Playyards WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Evenflo Company Inc. of Piqua, Ohio is warning consumers that some of its Houdini Portable Playyards may present a potential small parts choking hazard and a sharp edge hazard. Approximately 205,000 of these playyards were sold. Small plastic covers from "push caps" used to secure various parts of the playyards together may crack and separate. Evenflo and the CPSC are aware of a number of reports of the plastic caps separating. Although no injuries have been reported, this action is being taken to prevent young children from choking or cutting themselves. All Houdini model numbers beginning with 332 are involved in this warning. The model number is located on a tag attached to the bottom of the unit. The playyards sold nationwide for about $45 from 1994 through 1996. CPSC and Evenflo are advising all Houdini owners to inspect the pushcaps on their playyards. The push caps on Houdini Playyards are small metal washers covered by a plastic clip. In some cases, these plastic clips have cracked and separated from the metal washer. The plastic clip could then present a choking hazard, and the exposed metal washer may be sharp enough to cut a child. The exposed metal washer will continue to hold the playyard securely together. Each playyard contains 16 push caps with three located in each corner of the top rail, and one in the center of each top rail. Consumers should look for loose, cracked, or missing plastic covers. If any are found, consumers should call Evenflo at (800) 490-7549 immediately to obtain free replacement push caps and installation instructions. Even if no loose, cracked, or missing plastic covers are found, consumers should call for a free warning label.
Wooden Beads & Tops Recalled NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Ken Giles December 17, 1996 (301) 504-7052 Release # 97-042 Wooden Toys Recalled Because of Lead Paint WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Oriental Trading Company of Omaha, Neb., is voluntarily recalling approximately 44,400 wooden toys because some of the paint on the toys contains high levels of lead. CPSC standards ban toys containing high levels of lead. Young children might swallow lead if they chewed on these toys. Although no reports of illness or injury have been received, this recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of lead poisoning. Two types of wooden toys are involved in this recall. One toy is a set of 32 wooden beads with a cord for stringing the beads, packaged in a clear plastic bag labeled (in part): "OTC Item No. M-027/653 QTY: 1PC MADE IN CHINA." The other toy is a set of six spinning tops, packaged in a clear plastic bag labeled (in part): "OTC ITEM NO: M-027/294 QTY: 1 SET MADE IN CHINA." These two toys were sold from September 1994 to November 1996 through the firm's catalogs for under $4 and through retail stores. Consumers who purchased these wooden toys from toy stores should return them for a full refund or full credit. The toys and the rattle contain small components that can break off presenting a choking hazard to young children. The importers participating in this recall are Laiko International Company Inc. of City of Industry, Calif.; Lexin Inc. of Los Angeles, Calif.; Shalom International Corp. of Carteret, N.J.; and The Right Start Inc. of Westlake Village, Calif. CPSC and the importers are not aware of any injuries involving these toys or the rattle. The recalls are being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Laiko International Recall Laiko International is recalling more than 50,000 Free Wheel Racer toy cars. The plastic Free Wheel Racer toy cars have orange or pink bodies, black wheels, a silver rear mounted engine, and a driver's head in the cockpit. The cars were packaged in clear plastic with a cardboard header labeled in part, "FREE WHEEL RACER CHAMPION - FOR AGE 5 & UP - MADE IN HONG KONG - Non-Toxic." Lexin Inc. Recall Lexin Inc. is recalling about 340 Little Performer and 240 Flying Boat toys. The Little Performer toy (Item MS 085) is a wind-up figurine of a girl with a vinyl head, hands, and legs wearing a red and white fabric dress. The girl is seated at a xylophone, which she plays when wound. The Flying Boat toy (Item MF 742) is a pressed sheet metal model of a wheeled speed boat. The 13 inch long by 4.25 inch wide boat is red, white, blue, and gray with black tires with a vinyl driver's head in the cockpit. The Little Performer toys were packaged in paperboard boxes. Labeling on the box includes a picture of the toy and reads in part, "WIND-UP SPRING - LITTLE PERFORMER WITH SOUND EFFECT - FOR CHILDREN AGES 3-UP - MADE IN CHINA - MS 085." Announce Novelty Product Recalls WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Shelby Ltd., Division of Wang's International, of Memphis, Tenn., recalled about 40,000 paperweights and pens because they contain kerosene or other petroleum distillates and many were sold to children. If the paperweights or pens break and leak, the liquid can be hazardous if inhaled into the lungs or swallowed. The liquid could also be combustible, presenting a flammability hazard. Shelby Ltd. has received at least 10 reports of the paperweights breaking and releasing their contents. No injuries have been reported. The plastic paperweights came in the following five styles: Ocean In The Box, Floating Eye, Antique Car, Magic Diamond, and Water Timer. The paperweights were individually packaged in cardboard boxes bearing the name of the style. The pen, which is clear plastic with an eyeball in the middle, is packaged in a cellophane wrap and bears no labeling. The paperweights and pen were sold nationwide through school stores to children from kindergarten through the sixth grade from October through December 1996 for about $4 to $5. Consumers should take the paperweights and pens away from children immediately, and discard or destroy them. The firm is out of business and cannot be contacted.
500-Watt Halogen Bulbs Recall/Replace by Tensor NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Ken Giles December 9, 1996 (301) 504-7052 Release # 97-038 CPSC and Tensor Corp. Announce Recall to Replace 500-Watt Halogen Bulbs WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Tensor Corporation of Chelsea, Mass., is voluntarily recalling approximately 100,000 500-watt tubular halogen bulbs sold in 50,000 torchiere-style lamps. The bulbs may shatter during use, presenting a fire hazard when hot fragments of the shattered bulb land on nearby combustible materials, such as furniture, bedding, newspaper or carpet. Tensor is aware of 281 incidents of bulbs shattering resulting in at least six burn injuries and some small fires. Three fires resulted in more than $25,000 in damage. The halogen torchiere floor lamps, measuring 71 inches tall, have a round base, a three part pole, and a shallow, bowl-shaped shade. A small round switch located on the lamp's pole enables consumers to adjust the bulb's brightness. The model number "LT609N" or "LT609P" and a manufacturing plant code appear on stickers on the bottom of the lamp base. Montgomery Ward and Electric Ave. & More stores sold the lamps nationwide from October 1995 through April 1996 for about $20. Each lamp was packaged with one installed bulb and some were sold with a second replacement bulb. The affected bulbs were manufactured in China. Tensor lamps sold before October 1995 are not included in this bulb recall, and lamps sold after April 1996 contain the 300-watt replacement bulbs. Consumers should immediately discard the affected 500-watt bulbs. Consumers should retrieve the date of purchase, the model number, and manufacturing code from the bottom of the lamp base, then call Tensor's Customer Service toll-free number at (888) 564-4424. After verifying that the caller's lamp contains an affected bulb, Tensor will provide a free 300-watt tubular halogen replacement bulb for each 500-watt bulb included with the lamp. Earlier this year, Tensor and Montgomery Ward initiated a replacement program for 500-watt bulbs in response to the withdrawal of Underwriters Laboratories' (UL) listing of torchiere floor lamps equipped with 500-watt bulbs because of their flammability potential. Thousands of consumers have already received their free 300-watt replacement bulb. No further action is needed by consumers who participated in this earlier replacement program. While Tensor is replacing 500-watt bulbs with 300-watt bulbs, CPSC warns that most halogen torchiere lamp bulbs, which burn at very high temperatures, can start a fire if they come in contact with curtains, clothes, or other flammable material. Although replacing 500-watt bulbs with 300-watt bulbs will decrease the chance of the bulbs shattering, consumers should still keep the 300-watt bulbs away from combustibles in order to avoid fires.
AC Adapters for Armada 4100 Notebook Computers Recalled NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: December 5, 1996 (301) 504-7908 Release # 97-037 CPSC and Compaq Computer Announce Recall of AC Adapters for Armada 4100 Notebook Computers WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Compaq Computer Corp. of Houston, Texas, is voluntarily recalling worldwide certain AC adapters for Armada 4100 notebook computers. In the U.S., the recall involves approximately 30,000 adapters. These AC adapters could have a defective connector pin presenting a shock hazard. The connector pins connect the AC adapter to the power cord which plugs into an outlet. CPSC and Compaq Computer Corp. are not aware of any injuries involving these AC adapters. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Only AC adapters with both three hollow pins in the recessed male connector and part number 217984-001 on the bar code label are included in this recall. Adapters with the same part number, but with solid pins, are not included in this recall. The label with the part number is imprinted on the bottom of the adapters. The adapters are black and measure approximately 2 by 4 ½ inches. The recalled AC adapters were supplied with Compaq's Armada 4100 notebook computers and associated convenience bases or shipped as options or spare parts to commercial dealers. The adapters were sold worldwide from September 23, 1996 through November 20, 1996 through commercial dealers to end users or directly by Compaq to end users. The Armada 4100 notebook computer itself is not included in this recall. Consumers should unplug and stop using the recalled AC adapters immediately. Undersized wires that cannot carry the same load as a properly constructed extension cord present fire, shock, and electrocution hazards. CPSC and Division Sales Inc. are not aware of any injuries involving these extension cords. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The white extension cords are 6 feet long. The double-wired cords have a polarized male plug on one end and three polarized female plug-in sockets at the other end. The cords are labeled "SPT-1 18AWGX2X 80*C." The receptacle is marked in part "Rated for 125 volts. For indoor use only." The extension cords, imported from China, are packaged in red and black cardboard display sleeves that are labeled in part, "MASTER-TECH 6FT EXTENSION CORD ITEM NO. 80311 MADE IN CHINA FOR JUSTEN PRODUCTS ITASCA, IL 60143." Retailers and other distributors sold the extension cords nationwide during the last five years for about $2. Wooden Bunk Beds Recall NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Ken Giles November 27, 1996 (301) 504-7052 Release # 97-032 CPSC Announces Recall of Additional Wooden Bunk Beds WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission CPSC), five bunk bed manufacturers are recalling approximately 100,000 wooden bunk beds. The bunk beds have openings on the top bunk that present a potential entrapment hazard to young children. The spaces can be large enough for a child's body to pass through, but small enough to entrap the child's head. Since November 1994, CPSC and 26 manufacturers have announced recalls of more han 411,400 wooden bunk beds with similar entrapment hazards. In response to this action, the manufacturers participating in this recall have also identified bunk beds with similar entrapment hazards. Since 1990, CPSC has received reports of 32 children who died from becoming caught in bunk beds with similar spaces in the top bunk. Thirty-one of those children were ages 3 and under. The most recent death occurred on September 28, 1996. A 3-year-old boy died from becoming caught in a bunk bed manufactured by the Bedder Bunk Company. The ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) voluntary standard for bunk beds requires that, in addition to having guardrails on both sides of the top bunk, all spaces between the guardrail and bed frame, and in the head and foot boards on the top bunk, should be less than 3.5 inches. Bunk beds currently made by the companies listed below now meet the spacing requirement of the voluntary standard. The companies are also providing permanent labels or placing permanent labels on their bunk beds to warn that children under the age of 6 be prohibited from the upper bunk. CPSC and the manufacturers continue to urge parents and caregivers not to put children under the age of 6 on the top bunk. The manufacturers listed below are participating in this recall to improve the safety of these beds and to meet the requirements of the voluntary standard. Consumers should stop using the recalled beds immediately and call the company or contact the retailer for a replacement guardrail, retrofit kit, or instructions to help eliminate the potential entrapment hazard. If the battery pack floods during the dive, the battery could overheat later while above water and catch fire. LMI has received two reports of Source-12 Battery Packs catching on fire several hours after use. No injuries have been reported. If consumers notice the battery has flooded during a dive, they should disassemble the battery's retaining ring and bulkhead to prevent a possible fire. The battery packs, measuring 7 inches long by 4 inches wide, are black with a clear top. This corrective action involves Source-12 Battery Packs with the following model numbers: 800-0008 850-0001 through 850-0011 850-0013 and 850-0014 860-0001 through 860-0006 860-0008 860-0018 through 860-0031 Dive shops sold the Source-12 Battery Packs nationwide beginning in January 1990 for about $275. The K-9 Electric Fence Controllers used outdoors in high humidity or wet environments can overheat and result in fire. Waters has received three reports of overheating occurring in K-9 Electric Fence Controllers used in an unprotected outdoor setting where they are subjected to high humidity or water. Two controller cases showed signs of melting and one controller installed under a porch caused charring of the wooden flooring. The K-9 Electric Fence Controllers with serial numbers starting with MT08096 and MT09096 have a yellow, black, and red label that reads, "American FarmWorks K-9 ELECTRIC FENCE CONTROLLER." The K-9 Electric Fence Controllers sold individually came packaged in a plastic shell with a yellow backer card. Waters also sold the units as part of a pet and garden fence kit, packaged in a yellow, black, and red box with a picture of the K-9 Electric Fence Controller printed on the box. The kit is packaged with a compass that may leak fluid containing kerosene. The compass can be hazardous to young children if they ingest the kerosene or inhale it into their lungs. Price Stern Sloan Inc. has received one report of a 16-month-old child who vomited after ingesting fluid from the compass. The kit is intended for children 8 and older. The Exploring Nature Funstation (ISBN # 08431-3942-0) contains a book with a number of science projects and items to perform the science projects including a compass, magnifying glass, petri dish, crayons, a tweezers, test tube, a thermometer, and stickers. Warehouse clubs, bookstores, chain stores, and whole salers sold the kits nationwide from March 1996 through August 1996 for about $13 to $22. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers that about 13,000 portable cribs/playpens sold under the brand name All Our Kids pose a strangulation hazard to young children. The playpens, also known as travelyards or playards, have rotating top rails, which can collapse unexpectedly, trapping a child at the neck in the "V" formed by the collapsed top rail. The CPSC is aware of 7 babies who strangled in collapsed portable playpens with similar top rail designs made by three other manufacturers. The most recent of these deaths occurred on October 15, 1996. The top rails of the All Our Kids playpens can collapse even when the product is set up properly. The All Our Kids playards, models 741, 742 and 761, come in a variety of colors, shapes (rectangular and square) and sizes with some having a detachable toy bag on one end. The words "All Our Kids" appear on two of the four top rails. A variety of retailers sold the playpens nationwide from 1992 to 1995. The Draco Corporation of Montebello, Calif., sold the playards under the All Our Kids brand name. CPSC is not announcing a recall of these products because Draco/All Our Kids is out of business. Consumers who own All Our Kids model 741, 742 and 761 portable cribs/playards should stop using them immediately and destroy them to prevent future use.

The top rails on these playards may collapse unexpectedly, trapping a child at the neck in the "V" formed by the collapsed top rail. An 18-month-old boy died recently in Centreville, Va., when a Century playard collapsed. The Fairfax County, Va., Police Department provided information to CPSC regarding the death. Century is offering a free repair kit, consisting of new Posi-Locks top rails to prevent the rails from collapsing when a child is in the playard. This kit can be installed in the home using a Phillips head screwdriver. The Century Model 10-710, measuring 26 inches by 38 inches, was sold in Toys R Us stores beginning in June 1994 for about $50. The Model 10-810, measuring 28 inches by 41 inches, was sold nationwide beginning in February 1993 in juvenile products and discount stores for about $80. Both models fold compactly and fit into an accompanying nylon case for storing and carrying. The model number is located on a label on the floor or on one of the support tubes under the floor. All Century Fold-N-Go Models 10-710 and 10-810 are part of this recall. Other Century Fold-N-Go models have different top rails and are not being recalled. Consumers with either a Century Model 10-710 or Model 10-810 Fold-N-Go Playard should stop using the product immediately and call Graco, which now owns the "Century" brand name, at 800-345-4109 for a free repair kit and installation instructions. Consumers should not use the playard until the new top rails are installed.

These fuel bottles, used for camping equipment, have defective threads in the neck of the bottle that can cause leakage of fuel. CPSC and Coleman have received no report of injuries. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The Coleman Company is recalling all Peak 1 22-oz. fuel bottles manufactured duringthe first six months of 1996. The red-canistered fuel bottles can be identified by a "1-96" date code stamped into the bottom of the fuel bottle. Consumers could have purchased the defective bottles individually or with Peak 1 Apex stoves. Sporting goods stores and catalogs specializing primarily in backpacking, mountain climbing, and camping equipment sold the subject Peak 1 fuel bottles from May 1996 through September 1996 for $12.50 a bottle. Announce Hair Dryer Recall WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Best International Corp. of Long Island City, N.Y., is recalling approximately 5,000 hand held hair dryers. Since these dryers do not have a full immersion protection plug, they present a risk of electrocution if dropped in water while the dryer is in the "on" position. The hair dryers also present a fire hazard due to inadequate wiring. Before the use of immersion protection devices, there were an average of 18 electrocutions involving hand-held hair dryers each year. Since the introduction of immersion protection devices for hand-held hair dryers, the number decreased to two electrocution deaths in 1992. The current voluntary industry standard, which has been in effect since January 1, 1991, requires hand-held hair dryers to provide full immersion protection when either in the "on" or "off" position. The recalled dryers do not have this protection. CPSC and Best International Corp. are not aware of any injuries involving these hair dryers. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The white colored plastic hair dryers come with dryer attachments in a box labelled, "International Hair Styling Set with 7 Attachments...HD-868." The hair dryer has the words "Professional Styler Asbestos Free" printed on it. Retailers in the metropolitan New York area, such as bargain, discount, and $.99 stores, sold these hair dryers from November 1995 to May 1996 for $9.99. Consumers should stop using the recalled hair dryers immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund. For more information, consumers should call Best International Corp. at (718) 472-0860 from 1 to 5 p.m. EST. When buying a hair dryer, consumers should look for a large, rectangular-shaped plug at the end of the cord. The certification mark of a recognized testing laboratory should also be visible on the hair dryer or on the hair dryer's packaging. However, even with this improved protection, under no circumstances should consumers use a hair dryer where it could come in contact with water. Electricity and water are a potentially deadly combination.

Company Inc. of Los Angeles is voluntarily recalling over 170,000 bottles of Wood Lock Medicated Balm, imported from China. The product, containing more than five percent of methyl salicylate, does not have the required child resistant packaging. Methyl Salicylate can poison young children if ingested, seriously injuring or killing them. CPSC and So's are not aware of any injuries involving this product. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Consumers use the medicated balm, packaged in .85- and 1.7-fluid-ounce glass bottles with black plastic caps, to relieve muscle aches and pains. A label on the bottle reads in part, "WOOD LOCK Medicated Balm," with Chinese characters and a photo of a man's face in the center. Drug stores, health food stores, Chinese groceries, and health stores sold the balm in California and Oregon from 1994 through July 1996 for approximately $2.30 for the .85-oz. bottle and $3.45 for the 1.7-oz. bottle. CPSC and S-B Power Tool Company are alerting 150 owners of portable Bosch Mini-Grinders that the wrong wheel guard was sold with the grinders. If the misfitting wheel guard loosens and touches the high-speed grinding wheel, consumers could be injured by parts of the shattered wheel. S-B Power Tool urges recent purchasers of portable Bosch Mini-Grinders, models 1347A and 1347AK, to check the inside of the wheel guard collar for a metal bump that would prevent the guard from being clamped on the grinder securely. These guards should be removed and returned for the correct-fitting guards. S-B Power Tool has sold 150 portable Bosch Mini-Grinders with the wrong wheel guard since August 1996 in mass merchandise stores nationwide for about $150. No injuries have been reported. However, the company is alerting customers to check for and replace the misfitting guard to prevent potential serious injuries. Consumers should call (800) 301-8255, Ext. 3300 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CST for a correct-fitting guard free of charge, if their guard has the metal bump.
