The robes fail to meet federal flammability standards for children's sleepwear. The standards require sleepwear, including robes, to be flame resistant, and if the garment ignites, the flame must self-extinguish. Failure to meet the flammability standards presents a risk of serious burn injuries to children. CPSC and these firms are not aware of any injuries involving these robes. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. "Esleep Juniors," and "Made in Bangladesh" are written on labels on the collar of these robes. The robes have chest patches showing either a pair of bear cubs or a sleeping puppy. They are made of polyester, either blue or green, and were sold in sizes four through 14. The robes are long-sleeve robes with patch pockets. They have one of the following GPU numbers located on a collar tag: 9816, 9817, 9818, 9885, 9886, 9890 and 9891. JC Penney stores nationwide sold these robes from July 1998 through April 1999 for about $25. Consumers should stop using these recalled robes immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. Announce Recall of Home Heating and Air Conditioning Components WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Trane Company, of Tyler, Texas, a division of American Standard Inc., is voluntarily recalling 9,900 accessory electric heaters. These heaters are used to provide supplemental heat in heat pump or electric heating systems. Whether in the cooling, fan, heating or off mode, incorrectly routed wires can cause the accessory heater to continually cycle on and off. Excessive heat could catch nearby combustibles on fire. Trane and American Standard are aware of four reports of heaters continually running. No property damage or injuries were reported. These auxiliary electric heaters were sold as a component in various models of Trane and American Standard brand air handlers for heating and air conditioning systems. The air handler is the indoor component of the consumer's air conditioning or heating system. The air handler is a painted metal cabinet, which has the Trane or American Standard nameplate on its front. The nameplate provides a list of accessory electric heater model numbers that could be installed in that air handler. The model numbers for the recalled units are BAYHTR1419A and B. PRODUCT: Sprayer Bottles - Root-Lowell Manufacturing Co., of Lowell, Mich., is voluntarily recalling 90,000 all-purpose sprayers for use in the home and garden. These sprayers were model 1201 without funnel tops. Only 1 gallon, pump-type plastic sprayer bottles are included in the recall. Consumers typically fill the sprayers with cleaning agents or liquid fertilizer. The sprayer is a white container with a black pump assembly and black lettering on the label. Only sprayers with pump numbers "5" through "8" are part of this recall. The number is located on a small tab on the rim of the pump assembly. "Model 1201" and "RL FLO-MASTER" are written on the label of the sprayer. Kmart, Meijer, Roses Stores, A.L. Dammon, Essco Dist., Superstone Inc., Herman's Hardware, TLC Florist, American Feed, Topka Corp., and Mackey's Supply stores nationwide sold these sprayers from January 1999 through July 1999 for about $10.

Announce Recall to Replace "Pooh Poppin' Piano" Toys WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Tiger Electronics, Ltd., of Vernon Hills, Ill., is voluntarily recalling to replace approximately 202,000 Pooh Poppin' Piano toys. The green "leafy" top section of the carrot-shaped microphone attached to the piano toy can break off, posing a choking hazard to young children. Tiger has received three reports of the leafy top of the microphone breaking off. There are no reports of injuries. Only pianos with serial numbers starting with "WT" or "CO15D" are part of this program. The serial number is printed in two places: on a small label located inside the battery compartment, and on the bottom of the retail package. The piano toy is mostly lime green with eight characters from the "Winnie the Pooh" series that move up and down in response to pressing down corresponding piano keys. The orange and green microphone attaches to the piano with a short cord that amplifies sound. The toy announces eight color names, and plays piano sounds and eight pre-programmed children's songs. Toy and discount department sold these toys nationwide from August 1997 through August 1999 for about $20. Parents and caregivers should take these toys away from children immediately, and contact Tiger for instructions on returning it for a free replacement Pooh Poppin' Piano toy. Announce Recall of Star Fire Sprinklers WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Mealane Corp. of Philadelphia, Pa., is voluntarily recalling up to 1 million "Star" brand fire sprinklers manufactured from 1961 through 1976. These sprinklers could fail in a fire, exposing the public to bodily injury or death. These sprinklers have been installed nationwide, primarily in nursing homes. They also may be found in hospitals, schools, resorts, stores, office buildings, warehouses and supermarkets. CPSC reports that 67 percent of the sprinklers that were removed from locations across the country and submitted for testing to independent testing laboratories, such as by Underwriters Laboratories and Factory Mutual Research Corp., failed to activate as they should. CPSC has received one report of a Star sprinkler allegedly not functioning in a bedroom fire in a nursing home. The Star sprinklers being recalled are dry-type models D-1, RD-1, RE-1, E-1 and ME-1 made from 1961 through 1976. The name "Star" appears on the sprinkler, along with the model number and date of manufacture. With "dry-type" sprinklers, portions of the pipe do not have water in them until the sprinkler activates. The former Star Sprinkler Co., of Philadelphia, Pa., sold its assets and changed its name in June 1976 and became known as Mealane Corp. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, an independent, not-for-profit organization that evaluates and accredits hospitals and other long-term-care facilities, is supporting the recall with CPSC. Consumers and property owners should determine whether their facilities contain these recalled sprinklers and if so, call the Star Sprinkler Recall Hotline at (800) 866-7807 or access the website at www.star-recall.com to participate in the recall. Mealane will provide free replacement sprinkler heads and reimbursement for the labor costs of removing and replacing the old units. CPSC is continuing its ongoing investigation of fire sprinklers.

These doll sets come with a small ball, which poses a serious choking hazard to children under 3 years old. CPSC and Toys "R" Us are not aware of any injuries involving these doll sets. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries. The Bathtub Baby doll set includes a blue, plastic bathtub; a 5.5 inch soft vinyl doll wearing a blue diaper; a pink, fish-shaped strainer; and a pink ball about 1.25 inches in diameter. The set is packaged in a clear plastic bag with a hangtag. Writing on the hangtag includes, "BATHTUB BABY," WHAT A DOLL!" "FISHEL" and "MADE IN CHINA." Toys "R" Us stores nationwide sold these doll set from October 1998 through July 1999 for about $2. Consumers are urged to take the doll sets away from young children immediately and return them to the stores where purchased for a full refund. Announce Recall to Repair Ranch King Tractors WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), WCI Outdoor Products, Inc., of Cleveland, Ohio, is recalling for repair about 1,600 Ranch King tractors. The fuel line on these tractors can be misrouted near the ground drive belt or steering gears, which can result in it becoming damaged or cut, and allowing gasoline to spill. This poses a risk of fire and burn injuries to consumers. WCI Outdoors Products, Inc. has received one report of a minor fire and two reports of damaged fuel lines. No injuries have been reported. There are two models of the tractors being recalled. There are more than 1,500 Ranch King 18.5 HP tractors being recalled, with the manufacturer's ID: RK185H46A. There are more than 150 Ranch King Pro 20 HP tractors being recalled, with the manufacturer's ID: RK20H46A. The recalled tractors' serial number ranges are listed below: 18.5 HP Tractors 20 HP Tractors 022399D 001802 - 022399D 002071 032299D 002072 - 032299D 002701 032499D 002702 - 032499D 003331 022399D 001602 - 022399D 001761 The serial number and manufacturer's ID are on a label affixed to the fender, under the seat. "American Yard Products Inc." also is written on this label. These hydrostatic drive tractors were sold with a 46-inch mower deck. "Ranch King" or "Ranch King Pro" are written on the sides of these tractors. Quality Farm & Fleet stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia and Tennessee sold these tractors exclusively. They were sold from February 23, 1999 through May 28, 1999 for $1,399 or $1,699, depending on the model purchased. Consumers should stop using these tractors immediately. Consumers should call WCI Outdoor Products, Inc. to determine if their tractor is part of this recall, and to arrange for a free repair if needed. The snaps can detach, posing a choking hazard to children. CPSC and Shopko Stores are not aware of any reports of injuries from these creepers. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. These 100 percent cotton creepers were sold in sizes "0-3M" to 24M. The boys' creepers were made in solid and striped knit fabrics. The girls' creepers were made in various pastel shades of pointelle knit fabric, with a satin bow attached to the neck and an embroidered figure, such as a butterfly or heart, below the bow. Writing on the collar labels includes, "MADE IN HONG KONG." Shopko stores nationwide sold these garments from December 1998 to June 1999 for $4 to $6. Company Phone Number: (800) 964-9687 June 26, 1999 Release # 99-148 WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), EKCO Housewares Inc., of Franklin Park, Ill., is recalling about 333,000 utility lighters. These lighters can ignite in the trigger area when the trigger is pulled, creating a risk of fire and burn hazards to consumers. EKCO Housewares, Inc. received four reports of these lighters flaring up during use, causing minor burns to consumers' hands and arms. The recalled utility lighters are refillable and contain butane. They are about 9 inches long and have a white plastic base, red plastic handle with a black plastic trigger and on/off switch, and a metal barrel. "GAS TORCH" is imprinted on the barrel. A yellow label is affixed to the handle and reads in part, "DANGER: EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE CONTENTS UNDER PRESSURE...MADE IN CHINA." The lighters were packaged in cardboard display sleeves under the brand name EKCO. The package lists either item number 58046 or 15387. Mass merchandise, hardware and grocery stores sold the lighters nationwide from January 1997 through June 1999 for about $3. Consumers should stop using the recalled lighters immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. Alternatively, consumers can obtain a refund, plus postage, by mailing either the package card or white plastic base of the lighter to EKCO Housewares at 9234 West Belmont Ave., Franklin Park, IL 60131, Attention: Customer Service Department. The attached ornamental cherries on these garments pose a choking hazard to young children. Little Me is aware of one incident in which a child started to choke on one of the ornamental cherries. It was pulled from the child's throat by the attached string. These 100 percent cotton garments have a white top and cherry print bottom, with white embroidered collar, and were sold with a floppy hat with cherry print material. The outfits have ornamental cherries attached to a string at the waist. They were sold in sizes 3M, 6M, 9M, 12M, 18M and 24M. The collar labels read, "Little Me," "MADE IN PHILIPPINES" and "RN 20864." Major department and children clothing stores sold these garments from March 1999 through July 1999 for about $20 to $22. The drinking valve on the cap can detach, posing a choking hazard. NIKE has received one report of a valve detaching during use. There have been no reports of injuries. The NIKE Sport Waterbottle is a curved-shaped, 22-ounce bottle with a separate, black screw-top lid. The bottle body comes in gray, blue or yellow, and has a black rubberized grip area on each side. The word "NIKE" is on the bottom of the bottle. The NIKE "Swoosh" logo appears on the cap, and on the bottom and the grip area of the bottle. Major sporting goods and department stores nationwide sold these bottles from April 1999 through July 1999 for about $7. Consumers should stop using these bottles immediately. Consumers can either return the bottles to the store where purchased for a credit, or contact NIKE to receive a redesigned cap. Consumers wanting a new cap should throw the old cap in the trash. The hydraulic disc brakes on these snowmobiles can fail, resulting in serious injury or death to riders. Polaris is aware of 17 reports of the brakes on these snowmobiles failing. No injuries have been reported. The recall includes all 1999 models with hydraulic disc brakes and certain 2000 model Polaris snowmobiles. The word "Polaris" is written on the front of the hood and the sides of the seat of these snowmobiles. The snowmobiles were sold under numerous model names and numbers, and in a wide variety of colors. Polaris dealers nationwide sold these snowmobiles from June 1998 through July 1999 for between $4,000 and $8,000. Consumers should arrange now to have their snowmobile's disc brakes replaced for free at their local Polaris dealer before the winter riding season begins. Polaris also will replace the snowmobiles' brake pads at no charge. Registered owners will be notified by mail, and will be contacted by the selling dealer to schedule an appointment. The sneaker's side pocket has a pull tab on the zipper that can be twisted off, presenting a choking and ingestion hazard to children. CPSC and Reebok are not aware of any injuries from these sneakers. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The sneakers being recalled are the Reebok Classic Leather Zip, sold in toddler and child sizes up to size 9. Each sneaker has a small zippered pocket on the side. The zipper's pull tab is imprinted with the Reebok name and logo. When unzipped, the Reebok name and logo appear. "Reebok Classic" is on the front of the sneaker's tongue. The sneakers are made in Indonesia and China. The sneakers come in the following colors and styles. The style number is on the back of the sneaker's tongue, just below the "RA" number. Announce Recall of Television Carts WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Bush Industries Inc., of Jamestown, N.Y., is recalling about 100,000 television carts for repair. The cart can tip over. If the cart tips and the television falls, children and adults can be injured. Bush Industries has received two reports of these carts tipping over and the television falling, resulting in one minor injury. The television carts being recalled are laminated wood in colors of black (model 5414) or brown (model 5014). There is no identifying information on the cart, but the Bush name and the model number are on the instruction booklet that came with the cart. The carts measure 28 inches wide, 26.25 inches high with wheels and 15.5 inches deep. The carts are made to hold a 27-inch television and a VCR, and have a bottom cabinet with hinged double doors. Discount, home and furniture stores nationwide sold these television carts from June 1992 through August 1998 for about $60 to $100. The carts were sold ready-to-assemble. Consumers should remove their televisions and VCRs from the carts immediately and call Bush Industries at (800) 950-4782 between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday, or access their web site at www.bushfurniture.com. When used as an infant carrier, the handle locks on each side of the seat can unexpectedly release, causing the seat to flip forward. When this happens, the infant can fall to the ground and suffer serious injuries. "This is a serious problem that puts infants at risk," said CPSC Chairman Ann Brown. "The handle locks on these car seat carriers can release without warning. Even if you regularly buckle your child into the seat, parents who have this car seat should call for a free repair kit immediately." There have been 151 reports of the handle of the car seat/carrier unexpectedly releasing, resulting in 29 injuries to children. These reports include skull fractures, a broken arm, bumps to the head, black eyes, scrapes and bruises. According to the reports, some injuries occurred to children who were restrained in the seat. "Parents should continue using these rear-facing infant car seats, but should not use the carrying handle until a repair kit has been installed," said NHTSA Administrator Ricardo Martinez, M.D. "Safety is our highest priority. A child safety seat that is installed and used correctly is the most effective safety device available for young children in automobiles." The recall involves Arriva and Turnabout infant car seat/carrier models manufactured between March 1, 1995 and September 9, 1997. The manufacture date and model number are written on a label located on the side of the seat. Some car seats/carriers also were sold with strollers. Juvenile product, mass merchandise and major discount stores nationwide sold the car seats/carriers beginning in March 1995 for about $29 to $59 when sold alone, or $89 to $139 when sold with strollers. Cosco will provide a free repair kit that will make the handle stronger. The repair can easily be done in the home. Until a repair kit has been installed, CPSC, NHTSA and Cosco advise consumers not to carry the seat by the handle. Consumers may continue to use the product as a car seat or in combination with strollers. The CPSC, NHTSA and Cosco remind all parents and care-givers to properly restrain their infants in the car seat/carrier at all times.
