CPSC, Marco Alert Consumers to Gas Fireplace Recall Due to Fire Hazard WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Marco Manufacturing Inc., of Lynwood, Calif., re-emphasized the recall of more than 22,000 gas decorative fireplaces to repair their vent systems. If the interior vent pipe separates from its connection to the exterior wall of the house, hot exhaust gases can start a fire inside the wall. Marco and CPSC are aware of 22 fires involving these fireplaces. Several of these fires caused extensive damage. No injuries have been reported. The Marco gas fireplaces subject to this recall have a sealed glass-front panel and vent systems that exit the house through the side wall. The fireplaces can be identified by a six or seven digit model number starting with 794 or 797. These model numbers can be found on a label inside the unit's lower grill door. Most of the fireplaces have model designations that include the letters, "CCT." Older models have the designation "MGC36DV." The model designation can be found on the owner's manual. Gas appliance, and hearth and fireplace distributors and dealers sold these fireplaces from February 1993 through November 1997 for about $1,000, and the separate vent system for about $140. Most of these fireplaces were installed during new home construction. Marco already has repaired about 9,000 fireplace vent systems since July 1998. All other owners need to stop using these recalled fireplaces immediately. Marco will arrange for free repair of recalled fireplaces. For additional information, assistance in determining if you have a recalled fireplace or to arrange for a free repair, consumers should call Lennox, which bought out Marco, at (800) 655-2008. Earlier this year, Marco agreed to notify all consumers who have these recalled fireplaces and make the repairs. However, this alert is being issued because not all consumers have been notified by the company about the fire hazard and repairs have not been completed.

Announce Recall of Gas Grills With Side Burners WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Sunbeam Products Inc., of Neosho Mo., is recalling for repair approximately 80,000 Grillmaster gas grills with side burners. The side burner's propane gas hose can twist up toward the aluminum casting of the grill, causing overheating and melting of the hose. Gas leakage or a fire could result from the hose damage. Sunbeam Products received one complaint from a consumer who requested a replacement hose due to damage caused from the heat of the grill casting. There have been no reports of injuries associated with these grills. The recalled grills are black and have a side burner for cooking, similar to a gas-range stove top. The model numbers of the grills are: 56GR8, 560R8, 562D1, 562D9, GC548517, GG546517, GS544417, GS544717, GS546517, GG546537 and GG547517. The complete model numbers can be found on the identification label on the back of the grill, and on the assembly instructions and parts list. The word, "GRILLMASTER" is written on the front of these grills. Mass merchandise stores, such as Bradlees, Caldor, the Home Depot, Service Merchandise and Wal-Mart sold the grills nationwide from 1996 through July 1998 for about $200 to $250. Consumers should stop using the recalled grills immediately and call Sunbeam toll-free at (800) 200-2300 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, to receive a free retrofit kit. The retrofit kit contains a wire bracket guard and instructions for easy installation that will correctly position the side burner's propane gas hose. In March 1998, Sunbeam Products recalled grills with model numbers GG 461 EPB, GG 560 EPB, HG 560 EPB and GG 560 EPBS because of a similar hose placement hazard.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Originally issued November 1, 1988, Revised June 21, 2004 Release # 88-9l Siemens Announces Free I-T-E Circuit Breaker Box Inspection Program WASHINGTON, DC - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Circuit Protection Division of Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc. of Alpharetta, Georgia is voluntarily offering free inspection and correction of certain of its I-T-E brand circuit-breaker boxes (load centers) installed between September 1986 and May 1987. Siemens is extending a program begun in November 1986 when it discovered that some of the circuit-breaker boxes were manufactured using components of an incorrect material, which could cause overheating and malfunction. The involved ITE circuit-breaker boxes, or "load centers" can be identified by a five digit code marked on the top of the wiring diagram label inside the door which is opened to reset the circuit breakers. The specific date codes involved are as follows: H2586-H3186 (H = August, days 25 through 31, 86 = year) J0186-J3086 (J = September, days I through 30, 86 = year) K0186-K2486 (K = October, days I through 24, 86 = year) Example: A product manufactured on September 24, 1986 bears the code J2486. Anyone locating such a load center which does not have an "inspected lugs" sticker should call Siemens at 1-800-241-3138 to arrange for free professional inspection of the unit. If the wiring diagram label has an "inspected lugs" stamp, the load center has already been inspected and corrected if necessary.
Great American Toy Co. Inc., of Port Washington, N.Y., is recalling about 18,700 stuffed crabs. This recall involves only stuffed crabs that have antennaes with wires and that have the letters "BSW" on the Great American Toy Co. label attached to the toy. The stuffed crabs are either blue and green or red and orange. They come in a variety of sizes. Traveling fairs and carnivals gave the crab toys away as prizes from March 1998 to July 1998. The toy has a retail value of about $1 to $27, depending on the size of the stuffed crab.

The mechanism which rotates the heater side-to-side can wear through the insulation of electrical wiring inside the heater's base. In addition, some of the connections between the electrical wires and other components inside of the heater may be faulty. Either of these conditions can result in a fire. Royal Centurian/Sovereign have received 13 reports of fires involving the heaters, which may have caused the fires. The fires resulted in about $70,000 in property damage. No injuries have been reported. Only Royal Sovereign model RST-1200 portable heaters with serial numbers beginning with 92, 93, 94, 95 or 96 are being recalled. These heaters use a fan to force the heated air into the room, and they rotate side-to-side to distribute the heated air throughout the room. These units are constructed of black plastic in a cylindrical shape with a diameter of 7 inches and a height of 13 inches. The units are labeled in part, "RS...CERAMIC HEATER AUTO THERMOSTAT CONTROL...120v, 60 hz, 1500 w...MODEL NO. RST-1200 ...Royal Sovereign Corp...UL LISTED AIR HEATER...MADE IN KOREA." The serial number is located underneath the heater's base. Home building supply and discount stores nationwide, including Hechingers, Builders' Square, Walmart and Montgomery Ward, sold the heaters from January 1992 through September 1997 for about $99. Consumers should stop using these heaters immediately and call Royal Centurian Inc. toll-free at (888) 347-2757 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday for instructions on returning the heaters for free repair. Approximately 108,000 units remain with consumers. The units could contain a faulty transistor that can cause the unit to smoke, presenting a fire hazard to consumers. CPSC and AIWA America have received 100 reports of units smoking or emitting a burning odor and 3 reports of units catching on fire. No injuries were reported. The AIWA mini home audio systems subject to this recall have model number CX-NA303U on the back of the unit. The systems are silver and include a combination radio, tape and CD player, and speakers with black cloth grills. The CX-NA303U unit measures about 10 inches wide, 12 inches high and 13 inches long. Electronics, department and discount stores nationwide sold the systems from March 1998 through July 1998 for about $200 to $250. Consumers should stop using the systems immediately and call AIWA America toll-free at (888) 619-9353 between 6 a.m. and midnight EDT seven days a week for instructions on returning the systems for free repair. The children's jewelry sets are sold under the Expressions brand name. The sets contain a bracelet and a necklace made from colorful plastic beads strung on an elastic cord. Consumers' fingers can become entrapped and injured in the ball return's belt. CPSC and AMF have received 14 reports of children's fingers becoming entrapped in these ball returns. Injuries range from bruises and lacerations, to partial amputations and fractures. Sure-Pik ball returns were manufactured by AMF Inc. between 1973 and 1980 and are in approximately 238 bowling establishments, including military installations, nationwide. Sure-Pik is written on the side of the ball returns. For AMF-owned establishments, AMF will install plastic guards on either side of the Sure-Pik ball returns to raise the sides around the moving belt. Large warning labels will be placed on the guards. These labels are colorful pictographs warning children to keep their hands and fingers out of the ball return. For non-AMF-owned establishments, AMF will offer each owner the option of either obtaining the repair kit at cost, plus shipping and handling, or receiving a trade-in allowance of $900 toward the purchase of a new AMF C-90 ball return. AMF also will make special lease financing available for qualified owners. For all establishments using Sure-Pik ball returns, AMF will provide, free of charge, warning labels and a safety pamphlet on children's bowling. Owners of bowling establishments using Sure-Pik ball returns should contact AMF at (800) 342-5263 for information on participating in this recall program. Announce Recall of Rattles WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Michael Friedman Corp. of Brooklyn, N.Y. is recalling about 2,000 rattles. Small parts can break off of the rattles, presenting choking and aspiration hazards to infants. CPSC has received one report of a rattle separating and releasing small plastic balls from inside. No injury was reported. The recalled rattles are sold under the "Hobby Horse" brand name. The rattles, measuring 5.25 inches high, look like roses. A green stem-like handle extends from the bottom of the pink or purple "rose" and bends upon itself in a somewhat circular fashion to form a handle. The words "Hong Kong" are embossed on the lower portion of the "rose." The rattles were packaged in clear plastic shrink wrap attached to a purple polka dotted bluish cardboard header, labeled "Hobby Horse...Baby Rattle." Small children's clothing and discount stores nationwide sold the rattles from March 1997 to May 1998 for about $1 to $2. Consumers should take the rattles away from infants immediately and discard or destroy them, or if possible, return the rattles to the store where purchased for a refund. However, the firm, Michael Friedman Corp., is out of business and cannot be contacted.

The skillets' handle could bend or break and cause the skillets' hot contents to spill onto consumers, creating a risk of injury. CPSC and EKCO are not aware of any injuries involving these skillets. There are two types of skillets being recalled: Eterna 12-inch stainless steel skillets and Endura 12-inch non-stick stainless steel skillets. The EKCO Eterna 12-inch stainless steel skillets have the following identification embossed on the bottom of each pan, "EKCO Eterna, EKCO Housewares, Inc., 18/10 Stainless Steel, Made in China." Kmart stores nationwide sold the Eterna skillets from April through May 1998 for about $30. Walmart stores nationwide sold the Endura skillets from September 1997 through May 1998 for about $26. Under normal scuba diving conditions, the hoses on these BCDs can separate from the jacket, and possibly cause drowning. Durapro systems is aware of three reports of these low-pressure inflator hoses separating from these BCDs. No injuries have been reported. These recalled Durapro Systems BCDs are the Cirrus, Stratus, Aruba, Slimline and Resort. The low-pressure hoses on the BCDs, part number 302, connects the first stage regulator to the BCD power inflator valve. These hoses are identified with the following markings: "PLIOVIC MULTI PURPOSE 1/4" 1/D (6.4 mm) 250 PSI WP (1.7 MPA)...MADE IN USA...GOODYEAR." Retail dive stores and a mail-order catalogue sold these BCDs from January 1996 through May 1998 for about $179 to $359. Consumers who purchased one of thesea Durapro Systems BCDs should stop using it immediately. The hose from the BCD should be returned to the dive store where purchased for a free replacement hose. The chains on these bicycles were produced with a malfunctioning chain assembly tool. These chains can break during use, which could result in loss of control, causing the rider to fall and be injured. Specialized has received 10 reports of chains breaking. No injuries have been reported. The recalled chains were sold on the following 1998 model year Specialized bicycles: Stumpjumper M2, Stumpjumper M2 Comp, Stumpjumper M2 Pro, S-Works M2, Ground Control FSR Elite, Ground Control FSR Pro, and Ground Control FSR Limited. Specialized Bicycle-authorized dealers nationwide sold these bicycles from January 1998 through May 1998 for $500 to $3,000, depending on the model. Consumers with recalled bicycles should go to the store where the bicycle was purchased for a free chain replacement. CPSC, Oscar Mayer Announce Recall to Replace Decals on Pedal Cars Because of Lead Hazard Washington D,C - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Oscar Mayer Foods Corp., of Madison, Wis., is recalling the decals on about 16,000 Oscar Mayer Wienermobile pedal cars. These decals contain high levels of lead. High levels of lead presents a poisoning hazard to young children if ingested. Oscar Mayer is not aware of any illnesses or injuries involving this product. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of illness or injury. These hot dog-shaped pedal cars are orange and yellow, and measure about 46 inches in length. They are intended for children 3 to 7 years of age. Decals on these cars are located on the front, back, sides and interior panels of the pedal cars. Grocery stores in the U.S. and Canada distributed many of these pedal cars through special promotions and also sold a small number by mail order from June 1995 through May 1998. The cars were not available for purchase in retail stores. Consumers should immediately stop children from playing with these pedal cars. Announce Recall of Bicycle Chains WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), SRAM Corp., of Chicago, Ill., is recalling about 25,000 Sachs bicycle chains. The chains can break, causing the rider to lose control of the bicycle, fall and be injured. SRAM Corp. has received nine reports of chains breaking resulting in two minor injuries, which occurred in the United Kingdom. The recalled chains are Sachs Power Chains (PC chains) with model numbers PC-41, PC-51, PC-61, PC-80R and PC-91, and are stamped with the date code "F." The model number and date code are stamped on each link of the chain, though are difficult to see. Consumers should have their chains inspected at a local bicycle dealer to determine if they are afffected by this recall. These chains were sold as part of various 1998 model Giant, Schwinn and Specialized Bicycles. Announce Recall of Super Clean Aerosol Foam WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Castrol North America Inc. of Wayne, N.J., is recalling about 338,500 cans of Super Clean aerosol foam. The defective cans could allow the cleaner to gradually leak out through the seams. Direct contact with the cleaner could burn or irritate consumers' eyes and skin. CPSC and Castrol have not received any reports of the cans leaking. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Only the 22-ounce aerosol cans of cleaner are being recalled. The can is mostly colored purple with a plastic purple cap. The labeling on the can reads in part, "Castrol Super Clean...Solubilizes Grease on Contact...Foam Tough Task Cleaner/Degreaser." Cautionary information on the back of the can advises consumers to "Wear gloves and eye protection." Large and small retail stores nationwide, including Advance Auto, Auto Zone, Chief Auto, CSK, Kmart, Pep Boys, Strauss Discount, Wal-Mart and Western Auto, sold the cleaner from January 1997 through March 1998 for about $3. Announce Recall of Floral Candles WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Amscan Inc., of Elmsford, N.Y., is recalling 6,000 floral candles. These candles' containers can break and allow hot wax to escape. The hot wax can cause burns and the broken candle container creates a potential fire hazard. Amscan Inc. received one report of the candle container breaking while in use. No injuries have been reported. These 2 1/2-inch-high, scented floral candles come in a container that resemble a flower pot. They were sold in assorted colors, including red, white, purple, pink and yellow. They were sold wrapped in plastic with a sticker on the bottom of the candle reading, "Made in China" along with the UPC symbol. Party supply stores nationwide sold the floral candles from January 1998 through March 1998 for about $2. Consumers should stop using the candles immediately and return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund. Announce Recall of Deluxe Grill Rocks WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Keanall Products Inc., of Ardmore, Tenn., is recalling approximately 4,200 packages of Deluxe Grill Rocks, used as replacement briquettes in gas grills. The rocks can break apart when heated, possibly causing pieces to be ejected from the grill, and resulting in burns to nearby consumers. Keanall Products is aware of seven incidents where these rocks fractured and pieces were ejected from the grill. One consumer sustained minor burns. The Deluxe Grill Rocks are pyramid shaped and reddish brown in color. The product is available for sale in a box containing approximately 54 pieces. The package reads, "GRILL Care gourmet series...DELUXE GRILL ROCKS...Continually cleans as you cook -- virtually maintenance free." Much of the wording on the package is in English, French and Spanish. The packages also show a photo of shrimp cooking on a grill. The Deluxe Grill Rocks being recalled were manufactured by CharmBrik & Stone Inc. in Mexico. Wal-Mart retail stores nationwide sold the Deluxe Grill Rocks between January 1998 and April 1998 for about $10. Consumers should stop using these Deluxe Grill Rocks immediately, and return them to the store where purchased for a refund, or call Keanall toll-free to return the product using the company's overnight mail account. The lighters do not meet the 1994 requirement for child-resistant mechanisms in violation of the Consumer Product Safety Act. This act requires amechanism on disposable and novelty lighters shown to prevent ignition of the lighters by most children under 5 years old. Each year, CPSC estimates 190 deaths are caused by children under 5 years old playing with lighters. CPSC and ERA Intermarketing are not aware of any injuries involving these cigarette lighters. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The Elite-2 lighters are made of clear plastic tinted in assorted colors. The metal top is labeled "ELITE," and the lighter label bears the bar code: "16229 12001" and the date code, "3/97." Small retailers sold the Elite-2 cigarette lighters nationwide from June 1997 to March 1998 for about $1. CPSC, Manufacturers Announce Recall Program to Replace Vent Pipes on Home Heating Systems WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a landmark action, virtually the entire furnace and boiler industry together with the manufacturers of high-temperature plastic vent (HTPV) pipes have joined with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to announce a recall program. This program will replace, free of charge, an estimated 250,000 HTPV pipe systems attached to gas or propane furnaces or boilers in consumers' homes. The HTPV pipes could crack or separate at the joints and leak carbon monoxide (CO), presenting a deadly threat to consumers. CO is a colorless, odorless gas produced by incomplete burning of carbon-based fuel, including natural gas and propane. The initial symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to the flu, and may include dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea and irregular breathing. High-level exposure to CO can cause death. To determine whether they have HTPV pipe systems that are subject to this program, consumers should first check the vent pipes attached to their natural gas or propane furnaces or boilers. Vent pipes subject to this recall program can be identified as follows: the vent pipes are plastic; the vent pipes are colored gray or black; and the vent pipes have the names "Plexvent ," "Plexvent II" or "Ultravent " stamped on the vent pipe or printed on stickers placed on pieces used to connect the vent pipes together. Consumers should now check the location of these vent pipes. For furnaces, only HTPV systems that have vent pipes that go through the sidewalls of structures (horizontal systems) are subject to this program. For boilers, all HTPV systems are subject to this program. Other plastic vent pipes, such as white PVC or CPVC, are not involved in this program. After checking the vent pipes, consumers should call the special toll-free number (800) 758-3688, available between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. EST seven days a week, to verify that their HTPV pipe systems are subject to this recall program. Consumers with eligible systems will receive new, professionally installed venting systems free of charge. Additionally, consumers who already have replaced their HTPV pipe systems may be eligible for reimbursement for some or all of the replacement costs. The program came about as a result of mediation among 27 participants manufacturers of HTPV pipes and manufacturers of natural gas or propane-fired boilers and mid-efficiency furnaces. This is the first time that CPSC has used a mediator to bring together all segments of an industry to implement a program for the benefit of consumers. All consumers should have their fuel-burning appliances inspected each year to check for cracks or separations in the vents that could allow CO to leak into the home. In addition, CPSC recommends that every home should have at least one CO detector that meets the requirements of the most recent Underwriters Laboratories 2034 standard or International Approval Services 6-96 standard.
