Hedstrom Offers Free Replacement For Wood Baby Swing Washington, D.C. -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Hedstrom Corporation, Bedford, Pennsylvania, voluntarily replaced approximately 6,562 Hedstrom and Sears brand wooden baby swings sold nationally from April through December 1987. Hedstrom was aware of four reported incidents in which the swings collapsed because glue failed to hold the joints between the slats and frame. One reported incident involved bruises suffered by a child in the swing. Affected units can be identified by the model identification label located on the swing side or seat. Affected models are Hedstrom brand 4-798 and Sears brand 512.70907. Consumers should immediately discontinue using this swing and discard or destroy it. Infant Socks with Plastic Ornaments Warning by Princeton Hosiery Mills NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 11, 1988 Release # 88-020 Princeton Hosiery Mills Issues Warning On Plastic Ornaments On Infant Socks WASHINGTON --- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Le-Roi, a division of Princeton Hosiery Mills, Princeton, Kentucky, issued a warning today to consumers concerning two styles of its infant socks because they may present a choking or aspiration hazard if the plastic ornaments which are small parts, detach from the socks. Neither CPSC or Le-Roi knows of any injuries involving these socks. One style is a white sock with a blue, pink, turquoise or yellow stripe that had three pastel plastic teddy bears attached to the ankle. The other style is a white anklet with a "pearl" bead affixed to a satin bow on the cuff. Princeton Hosiery Mills marketed these hosiery items under it own "LE-ROI" label as well as under the "MOTHER CARE" label for Mother Care, Inc., New York, NY. The socks are identified as style numbers 1928 and 2213, or 2188 and 2120 respectively. The socks with the teddy bear ornaments were not shipped by Le-Roi after October 1986, and the socks with the pearl bead were not shipped after April 1987. Consumers who purchased these hosiery items for children under three should immediately remove the teddy bears and/or pearl bead from the socks and discard these ornaments to eliminate potential choking hazards. Baby Buddy Pacifier Holder Recalled by Baby Buddies NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 03, 1988 Release # 88-013 Pacifier Holder Recalled Due to Possibility of Choking Hazard WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Baby Buddies Inc., 615 Jasmine Avenue North, Suite I, Tarpon Springs, Florida is recalling early models of Baby Buddy Clip-On pacifier holders because they present a potential choking hazard. While neither the Consumer Product Safety Commission nor Baby Buddies know of any injuries involving these pacifier holders, consumers are urged to take the pacifier holder away from babies immediately and return them for a replacement to the retail store where they were purchased or to Baby Buddies, Inc. The BABY BUDDIES pacifier holders involved in this recall include the following color combinations: Pink ribbon/white bear, baby blue ribbon/baby blue bear, yellow ribbon/brown bear, red ribbon/white bear (preen scarf around bear's neck) and red ribbon/brown bear (green scarf around bear's neck). The recalled models of the BABY BUDDY can be distinguished from the new model now being sold by looking at the back of the clip. The new model uses a clip with two round (l/4" diameter) holes in the back. The units being recalled have no holes in the clip. Approximately 9,000 of these pacifier holders were distributed nationwide from March 1986 through March 1987. The pacifier holders sell for approximately $3.95 each. Then CPSC tested these pacifier holders the small bear figure separated from the strap which in turn could present a potential choking hazard if swallowed by infants. Baby Cribs Recall by HBLA NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 25, 1987 Release # 87-076 Baby Cribs Recalled WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, HBLA Imports, Inc., Dallas, Texas, today announced a voluntary recall of their HBLA non-full size baby cribs imported in January 1985. The cribs, distributed in Arkansas; Texas; Oklahoma: Artesia, New Mexico; Pikeville, Kentucky; and Hammond, Louisiana, sell at retail for approximately $65.00. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has determined that this type of baby crib is banned because it fails to meet safety requirements with respect to hardware, spacing of crib spindles in slats decorative cutouts, assembly instructions, labeling, and mattress thickness. Potential hazards include falling from the crib, pinching, laceration, entrapment, and strangulation. The crib is available in white, pink, and blue with solid wood end panels, one wooden spindle fixed side rail, and one wooden spindle drop side rail. The crib is packaged in a cardboard carton labeled "HBLA Dallas made in Taiwan." The crib itself bears no labeling. A picture of children and rabbits is on each side of each end panel. Neither the Consumer Product Safety Commission nor the firm is aware of any injury associate with these cribs, but the recall is being made as a precaution. Owners of these cribs are urged to immediately remove these cribs from use and return them for a refund to the retailer where purchased. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Originally issued November 24, 1987; Revised October 29, 2002 Release # 87-073 Fisher-Price To Modify Strollers WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Fisher-Price, East Aurora, New York, today announced it is voluntarily making available to consumers a free modification kit for approximately 41,000 of its Model 9110, combination carriage/strollers manufactured prior to July 1, 1986. A child's head or body can fall through an opening in the stroller when the seat is reclined. Although no serious injuries have been reported to date, the firm is taking corrective action to prevent that possibility. The combination carriage/strollers involved have fabric canopy side panels attached to the seat back with fabric fasteners. The fasteners can detach, leaving an open space when the stroller back is reclined through which an infant's head or body can fall. Fisher-Price has received 17 complaints that children's heads or arms protruded through the opening. In two cases the infant fell from the stroller. Fisher-Price has corrected the problem and models produced after July 1, 1986 are not affected. These models have a fabric liner stitched in place. The strollers were distributed by Fisher-Price between April 1985 and May 1986 and sold for about $100 in retail stores nationwide. Strollers subject to this program can be identified by the date of manufacture printed on the label on the back of the seat. Only those strollers dated prior to July 15, 1986 are affected. Fisher-Price will provide a free modification kit that will close the opening and prevent the possibility of a child's head or body falling through. The modification kit will still allow use of the multi-position feature of the seat back. Consumers can obtain the free modification kit with complete installation instructions by calling 800-233-4004 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST or by writing to Fisher-Price Consumer Affairs, PO Box 16, East Aurora, New York 14052. Until owners receive and install the modification kit, the strollers should not be used with the seat back reclined. The firm has received reports that 6 children have suffered broken legs after getting a foot caught between the stroller's two footrests. To eliminate the potential for injury if a child places a foot in the space between the footrests of the stroller which is designed to carry two children side by side, stop using the product immediately. These strollers were distributed nationally and in Canada. Hedstrom model numbers affected are: 15-063 15-163 15-562 15-5623 15,662 15-763 15-862 15-963 Also affected are Sears, Roebuck and Co. units with model number: 36494 and Sears Canada, Inc., formerly Simpson Sears, model number 66068. Crib Soft Playgrounds Recalled by Shelcore NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 27, 1987 Release # 87-065 Voluntary Recall of Crib Soft Playgrounds Announced WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Shelcore, Inc., South Plainfield, New Jersey is voluntarily offering consumers a free replacement for their Crib Soft Playground, an activity center for use in cribs and playpens, which presents a potential strangulation hazard. The Commission and the firm are aware of the recent fatal strangulation of a 14 month old Minnesota boy who inserted his head between a loosely tied toy and the mesh on a playpen. The toy is meant to be attached to the sides of a solid structure crib or playpen by string at each of its four corners. The instructions do not advise consumers about proper string tightness or against use in a mesh-sided crib or mesh-sided playpen. When strings are not tied tightly or become loosened with use, the string between the toy and the crib may present a potential strangulation hazard if a child were to become entrapped between the toy and the crib or playpen side. The recalled activity centers measure about 11-l/2 by 14 inches. One version of the product labeled "SHELCORE CRIB SOFT Playground" was sold by a number of retailers since 1982. The other version was labeled "Winnie-the-Pooh Crib Soft Playground" and was sold by Sears, Roebuck and Co., during 1982 and 1983. Some of the activity centers were sold as part of a three-piece crib toy set (see attached sketch). Approximately 110,000 of these Crib Soft Playgrounds were imported from Taiwan and sold by retailers nationwide and in Canada. The product retails for about $9.50. Consumers should stop using the activity centers immediately and remove them from cribs and playpens. Shelcore, Inc., has redesigned the activity center using a velcro straps to secure the product close to the wooden crib or wooden playpen side and to prevent attachment to a mesh-sided crib or mesh-sided playpen. To obtain the new activity center free of charge, consumers should mail their old activity center, along with their name, address and telephone number to Shelcore, Inc., 3474 S. Clinton Ave., S. Plainfield, N.J. 07080. Postage costs will be reimbursed by the firm. Portable Crib Floorboard Replacement by North States Industries NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 29, 1987 Release # 87-057 CPSC Announces Voluntary Portable Crib Floorboard Replacement WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, North States Industries, Inc. of Minneapolis, Minnesota, today announced it is voluntarily replacing the floorboard on a portable crib distributed nationwide by Sears, Roebuck and Co. The portable crib involved has an adjustable floorboard that also allows the crib to function as a changing table. Some 14,500 affected cribs have been sold. The Commission and the firm are aware of an incident involving a young infant who received a fractured skull when the floorboard of her portable crib was dislodged causing her to fall and strike her head on the floor. The floorboard was in the upper "changing table" position when the infant's grandmother attempted to lower the drop side causing the floorboard to dislodge and the infant to fall. The only other reported incident did not result in injury to the infant occupant. The affected portable cribs are Sears model numbers 29-30691 (maple stain) and 293-0692 (varnish finish) distributed between March 1, 1986 and December 14, 1986. The product retails for about $70.00. The floorboard contains only one clip attached to the underside and is marked with the word "Front" on the upper surface close to one of the sides (see drawing). Consumers should stop using the portable cribs immediately and call North States Industries collect at 612-522-6505 to receive a free replacement floorboard. To prevent the drop side from being lowered while the crib is in the "changing table" position, North States has redesigned the floorboard. The redesigned floorboard can be identified by its six metal clips on the underside and a cautionary label advising against flowering the drop side when the floorboard is in the changing table position. Only consumers owning a floorboard with one clip attached to the underside are affected by this program. Signs advising consumers of the possible hazard and the availability of the redesigned floorboard were posted in Sears stores beginning in May. Infant Walkers Recalled by McCrory NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 1, 1987 Release # 87-028 INFANT WALKERS RECALLED WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, McCrory Stores today announced a voluntary recall of Baby Walker, Reference Number PHT417, made expressly for York Distribution Company, due to seat and strap designs which could result in injury to a child. Approximately 103,000 walkers have been imported nationwide since 1983. McCrory is recalling these walkers as a result of 30 incidents of crotch strap slippage or disengagement and tearing or stretching of the seat material, which could allow an infant to fall through the seat to -1 the floor and become caught or entangled. One incident of crotch strap slippage is known to have resulted in a broken collar bone. The walkers involved are round with a silver metal frame and yellow tray with three play dials, with multi-colored animal print vinyl padded seat and six yellow plastic wheels. The affected walkers contain a silver sticker under the tray listing Reference Number PHT417 and York Distribution Co. (see drawing) McCrory will provide a full refund to all owners of the Model PHT417.e The walkers were sold for approximately $15 at the following McCrory Company stores: McCrory, T.G. & Y, J.J. Newberry, McLellan, H.L. Green, Kress, Silver, Elmore, Britts, and Kittinger as well as other retail stores nationwide. Owners of affected walkers the place of purchase. Walkie Baby Walker Repair Program by Perego Products NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 15, 1987 Release # 87-024 CPSC & Perego Products Announce Repair Program WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Perego Products, Inc., of Lyndhurst, New Jersey, today announced a voluntary repair program involving its "Walkie" baby walker. The Walkie models involved were produced between March 1985 and June 1986. The Walkie walkers contain a plastic height adjustment mechanism for the seat which allows it to be raised and lowered. In at least five instances, the plastic height adjustment mechanism has fractured, collapsing the walker and allowing the infant in the walker to fall to the ground. The Commission is aware of one minor-injury to an infant using the-walker. Perego Products has corrected the problem and the Walkie models currently being distributed are not affected. The Commission believes that in excess of 40,000 walkers may be affected. The walkers sold for approximately $30.00 in retail stores nationwide and can be identified by the type of plastic height adjustment mechanism used. (See drawing). Perego Products will provide free to owners a repair kit which will prevent the collapse of the seat. Hi-Back "Kidde Kare" Baby Walkers Recalled by Service Merchandise NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 23, 1987 Release # 87-019 Baby Walker Recall WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Service Merchandise Company of Nashville, Tennessee, today announces a voluntary recall of 49,000 Hi-Back "Kidde Kare" Infant Walkers, Model 106 FLP, which were purchased in Service Merchandise Stores in 1984 and 1985. The models involved have a white vinyl binding tape on the edges of the crotch strap. The hazard involves slippage of the strap through the buckle which secures the front of the walker's seat to its deck. This slippage could result in infant entrapment or injury. The Commission and Service Merchandise are aware of at least 5 incidents involving seat strap slippage, one of which was associated with an infant death. Service Merchandise is offering a free replacement seat at no charge to the consumer and urges all owners of the Model 106 FLP walker to participate in the recall. Small Wonders Crib and Playpen Warning NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 11, 1987 Release # 87-008 Baby Furniture Outlet Baby Cribs and Playpens Present Hazard to Infants The Consumer Product Safety Commission today announced that Small Wonders full-size baby cribs imported from 1981 to 1986 by Baby Furniture Outlet Inc., Marathon, Florida are banned. The cribs, distributed nationwide, failed to meet one or more CPSC safety requirements with respect to dimensions, spacing of crib components, hardware, construction, and assembly instructions or labeling. Not all cribs present the same hazard but hazards, which may be present, include strangulation, head entrapment, pinching, laceration and falling. CPSC is aware of 19 incidents with the cribs, several involving bruises and 2 incidents involving the playpens. In addition, two playpens, "Small Wonders Play Yards Models 286 and 391," also sold nationwide during this same period, may have floors that collapse, or sharp staples that come loose or protrude. The playpen may trap children's arms or legs if the floor collapses and staples may cause laceration or choking hazards. Because of the hazard presented by these cribs and playpens, the Commission urges consumers to immediately discontinue their use. In those cases where the consumer chooses to dispose of the hazardous models of cribs and playpens, they should be disposed of in a manner which assures that they cannot be used in the future. Since Baby Furniture Outlet is currently involved in bankruptcy proceedings and liquidation, the company maintains that it is unable to bear the costs of recalling any cribs or playpens. Any consumers who have purchased a Small Wonders crib or playpen from a Baby Furniture Outlet retail store may call CPSC toll-free hotline number at 800-638-CPSC for advice as to what hazard may be present for a particular crib or playpen model and what corrections, if any, can be made. The Small Wonders full-size wood crib styles include - "Colonial" model numbers 2001, 370-O and 3707, "Jenny Lind" model numbers 2002, 2004, 3302 and 4302, "Wicker" model number 2207, "Bentwood" model number 2003 and "Gay Nineties" model number 2005. The Small Wonders non-full-size crib styles include "Jenny Lind" model number 281, "Colonial" model number 282, 'Bentwood" model 283, and model number 284 - and 285 (no style designations). Wooden cribs may be either white or natural finish.
Baby Rattles Recalled by U.S.Toy Company NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 3, 1986 Release # 86-067 Baby Rattles Recalled Because Of Choking Hazard Washington, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the U.S. Toy Company, Inc. of Grandview, Missouri, is recalling two models of baby rattles because they do not comply with safety requirements for rattles. When the CPSC tested these rattles they were found to have handles which are small enough to enter an infant's mouth and lodge in the throat causing a choking or suffocation hazard. The rattles are the "Berchet Bell Rattle" and "Sunny Smile Mirror rattle". The Berchet rattle is made of yellow plastic in the shape of bell with a red striker and is approximately 6 inches long. The words "JOUETS berchet MADE IN FRANCE Diefenbach Design C 1979 Berchet" are embossed on the rattle. The yellow and blue plastic Sunny Smile Mirror Rattle is approximately 5 inches long with a round handle 1 1/4 inches in diameter at one end and a round section 3 inches in diameter at the other end with a mirror on the blue side and a smiling face on the yellow side. The Sunny Smile Mirror Rattle has no labeling on it but was packaged in a clear plastic bag with a cardboard header labeled, "Sunny Smile Mirror Rattle". Approximately 480 of the Berchet Bell Rattles and 1,872 of the Sunny Smile Mirror Rattles were distributed nationwide over the past two years. While neither the Consumer Product Safety Commission nor U.S. Toy Co., Inc., know of any injuries involving these rattles, consumers are urged to take the rattles away from babies immediately and return them for a full refund to the retail store where they were purchased or to U.S. Toy Company, Inc., 1227 East 119th Street, Grandview, Missouri 64030. Johnson & Johnson Crib Toys Case Settled NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 23, 1986 Release # 86-065 Johnson & Johnson Crib Toys Case Settled Washington, DC -- The U.S. Consumer Product-Safety Commission and Johnson & Johnson Baby Products Company announced today that the company and the Commission staff had entered into a consent agreement resolving a pending CPSC action relating to three of the company's toys -- Soft Triplets, Piglet Crib Gym, and Triplets marching Band. These toys have a common design consisting of three cloth dolls held together by short pieces of elastic with a plastic ring at each end. In a complaint filed May 30, 1986, the Commission staff alleged that when the toys were used as crib toys, babies could get caught and possibly strangle themselves on the toys or on strings used to hang them across cribs and playpens. Baby Pumpkin Dolls Recalled by S & H NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 1, 1986 Release # 86-059 My Baby Pumpkin Dolls Recalled Because of Choking Hazard Washington, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, S & H Wholesale Corporation of East Syracuse, New York is recalling 2,400 "My Baby Pumpkin Dolls" sold in the Syracuse/Rochester, New York area between July 1985 and June 1986. Tests conducted by the CPSC showed that the dolls' hands detach and are small enough to be a choking hazard. To meet CPSC safety requirements, toys for children younger than three must not have any small parts. Each "My Baby Pumpkin Doll" is approximately seven inches tall with plastic head and hands and stuffed fabric torso, arms and legs. Some dolls have yarn hair in yellow, brown or tan, and others have no hair. There are boy and girl dolls dressed in a variety of outfits, some with hats. All dolls have blue eyes and freckles. There is a fabric label sewn into the body of each doll which says, "MADE IN HONG KONG BY H.K. CITY TOYS FTY LTD." and "ALL NEW MATERIALS CONTENTS: COTTON/POLYESTER FIBER ME 1015 OH PA 941 PA PA 941 MA T-533-M". Although the CPSC and S & H Wholesale have not received any reports of injuries involving this toy, consumers should take these dolls away from children immediately. September 15,1986Release #86-055 CPSC Warns of Dropside Mesh-Sided Crib Dangers Washington, DC -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and nine manufacturers of dropside mesh-sided cribs and playpens today renewed a warning to parents that these cribs and playpens present an asphyxiation and suffocation hazard when a child is left in one of these products with a side down. Beginning the second phase of an extensive publicity campaign to alert parents to the dangers of leaving infants in dropside mesh-sided cribs and playpens with a side down, the Commission cited 15 deaths of young children in the "side down" scenario since 1978. Seven of the victims were six weeks old or younger. The victims rolled or moved off the floor of the crib or playpen into the mesh pocket formed by the lowered side and suffocated. Children may be unable to cry out when caught in the mesh pocket because they cannot breathe. Children can also suffer other injuries such as brain damage as a result of becoming caught in the mesh pocket of the lowered side. The nine manufacturers in signing a Consent Agreement last year agreed to engage in a notice campaign. The program was initiated in August 1985. This announcement is part of the campaign which includes sending letters to households with children nine months of age or younger to warn of the "side down" hazard. The firms will also mail posters to pediatricians, obstetricians, and health officials; place a paid advertisement in Parents magazine, and seek space in other magazines aimed at families with young children. Firms signing the Consent Agreement and Participating in the safety program are Bilt-Rite Juvenile Product, Inc.; Century Products, Inc.; Pride-Trimble Corporation; Spalding and Even-Flo Companies, Inc. (successor to Questor Corporation); Strolee of California; and Welsh Company, Inc. July 31, 1986 Release # 86-047 Puck Children's Furniture Repairs Omar Crib Entrapment Hazards Washington D.C. -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Puck Children's Furniture, Inc., Miami, Florida, is voluntarily repairing its Omar Crib to eliminate a head and neck entrap- ment hazard which could result in suffocation, and a foot entrapment hazard. The top edge of the end panels of the Omar crib is an inverted "U" shape and these panels are adjustable in height. With either of the end panels in its lowest position, a V shaped opening between the end panel and-corner post creates an opening where a child's head and neck could be caught. In addition, when the mattress support is in its lowest position and the side rail is in its highest position, the bottom of the side rail is higher than the mattress support, creating a gap where a child's foot could be caught. Since October, 1983 a total of 1,137 Omar Model cribs have been distributed nationwide by Puck Children's Furniture. The crib retails for approximately $400. Neither the CPSC nor Puck Children's Furniture is aware of any reports of injuries involving this crib. The crib is available in both natural and white. Side rails and end panels are adjustable in height. The top of the slatted end panels is an inverted "U" shape, and there is a storage drawer under the mattres: support of the crib. Wheels are included with the crib. The crib is packaged in a carton labeled "Made in Italy - Puck Children's Furniture - Omar". The crib itself bears no labeling. Puck Children's Furniture has advised retailers to stop selling the Omar Cribs until they have been repaired. The repair kit includes a replacement stabilizer, wooden plugs and instructions for making the repairs. Bassinet Repaired by Badger Basket NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR RELEASE July 22, 1986 Release # 86-44 Repair Program To Prevent Injury From Bassinet Collapse Announced Washington, DC -- In cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, Badger Basket Company of Edgar, Wisconsin, announced a voluntary repair program for certain bassinets produced prior to 1982, due to the possible collapse of their leg braces. Bassinets produced after 1982 incorporate a leg brace of another design and are not affected. The Commission and Badger have investigated 7 instances in which the braces connecting the foldable legs to the bassinet collapsed. The Commission believes that serious injury can occur to an infant resting in the bassinet, if the leg brace were to collapse. The bassinets are wicker in style and the mattress pads may contain the name Badger Basket on the tag which says "Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law". Only those bassinets produced and sold prior to 1982 are affected. Satisfactory design changes were implemented by the firm in 1982. Additionally, production after 1983 contains a date code (indicating the month, day, and year of production) on the bottom of the bassinets which clearly distinguish the new-style leg brace from the old (See drawings below). An estimated 500,000 bassinets may have been produced from 1958 to 1982. While the staff does not believe all pose a risk injury, depending upon the amount of the use, the potential may exist for a leg brace failure. Owners of the Badger Bassinets are urged to take the following action: During use of the bassinet, ensure that leg braces are locked in the open position. Periodically check the leg braces especially if the bassinet has not been used for a time and has been folded up in storage. Consumers who own Badger Bassinets produced prior to 1982 should contact the Company for a free repair kit. Crib Toys Recalled by Johnson & Johnson NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 2, 1986 Release # 86-36 Issues Complaint Seeking Recall Of Johnson & Johnson Crib Toys Washington, D.C. -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today announced that its staff has issued a Complaint against Johnson & Johnson Baby Products Co., Inc. seeking a recall of over 1.6 million crib toys because of alleged strangulation hazards to infants. The Commission authorized issuance of the Complaint by a 3-l vote with Acting Chairman Graham and Commissioners Scanlon and.,Armstrong voting for the Complaint and Commissioner Dawson voting against it. Commissioner Statler recused himself from participating in this matter. The Complaint alleges two young children have strangled on the toys. A 10 month old boy died in Temple Hills, Maryland, in October, 1984, when he became entangled in the strings tying a Soft Triplet toy across his crib. A seven month old girl died in Coronado, California in December, 1985, when she was caught by the neck on top of a Triplet stretched across her crib. The Soft Triplet, Piglet Crib Gym, and Triplets Marching Band toys can be hung across cribs and playpens and used as crib gyms. Consumers use their own strings or cords to tie the Soft Triplets and Marching Band toys. Once children can raise their heads over the strings or over the toy, they can get caught and strangle. Over 1.6 million Soft Triplets were sold by mail order from 1979 to March of 1986 through magazines such as Parents, American Baby, and Baby Talk. About 62,000 Piglets and 3,000 Marching Band toys were sold through retail outlets nationwide, the Piglets from 1982 to 1984 and the Marching Band from 1985 to March to 1986. The toys consist of three soft doll-like figures held together with elastic and with plastic rings at each end and are advertised for use from birth to 24 months. The staff believes these toys are dangerous and should be removed from cribs and playpens immediately. While Johnson & Johnson is conducting a warning campaign against hanging the toys in cribs or playpens, the staff believes the toys should be recalled and removed from children's environments completely to prevent deaths and injuries.
