Bargain Wholesale, of City of Commerce, Calif., is recalling about 7,000 units of the Onika Steam/Dry Spray Iron. The unlabeled iron is made of gray plastic. Writing on the electric cord reads, in part, "CH0001708-91." The iron, along with a water measuring cup and a nap brush, is packaged in a red box labeled, in part, "Onika Steam/Dry Spray Iron ... ZQYD150g ... UL ... Made in Taiwan." Discount stores in the western U.S. sold these irons from January 1997 through June 1998 for about $4. PROBLEM: The irons have inappropriate size wiring, which can cause a fire. The plastic housings of the irons are not resistant to ignition. Additionally, the irons present a potential scald hazard during use. If they are tilted downward, a shower of hot water is unexpectedly emitted. WHAT TO DO: Consumers should immediately stop using this item and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Inc. Announce Recall to Repair Child Carriers WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Evenflo Co. Inc., of Piqua, Ohio, is recalling about 22,000 Hike 'N Roll child carriers for repair. Small children can slip sideways into the leg openings, creating a potential strangulation risk. Evenflo has received 16 reports of children slipping into the leg openings, with some reports of red marks on the child's neck. No serious injuries have been reported. Evenflo is offering a free seat insert to reduce the size of the leg openings and provide a more secure fit. The Hike 'N Roll carriers being recalled are model numbers 522101 and 522102. They were manufactured between June 1, 1996, and October 31, 1997. Both the model number and the manufacturing date are found on a white tag attached to the bottom of the carrier. These carriers are green and blue or blue and beige. They can be used both as a backpack carrier and as a stroller. "Evenflo" is printed on the front and back of the carrier. Juvenile product stores nationwide sold these carriers from June 1996 through June 1998 for about $65. CPSC, Century Announced Recall to Repair Fold-N-Go® Care Centers WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Century Products Co., of Macedonia, Ohio, voluntarily recalled about 50,000 Fold 'N Go Care Centers for repair. The care center's bassinet could have loose fabric, which can create a pocket near the floorboard in which an infant can become entrapped and suffocate. Century has received four reports of babies getting their head caught between the bassinet's mesh side and floorboard, including one child who reportedly required overnight hospitalization. The repair is no longer available. Consumers should destroy the product. Only Fold 'N Go Care Centers with model numbers 10-750 or 10-760 manufactured before September 1998 are being recalled. These portable, wheeled care centers include a playard, a changing table with a side storage compartment and a bassinet. Model 10-760 comes with a canopy. The model number and manufacture date are found on the tube supporting the underside of the playard. "Century" is imprinted on the side of the playard. Juvenile product stores nationwide sold these care centers from March 1998 through August 1998 for about $100 to $130. Consumers should stop using the bassinet immediately and destroy the product. Approximately 108,000 units remain with consumers. The units could contain a faulty transistor that can cause the unit to smoke, presenting a fire hazard to consumers. CPSC and AIWA America have received 100 reports of units smoking or emitting a burning odor and 3 reports of units catching on fire. No injuries were reported. The AIWA mini home audio systems subject to this recall have model number CX-NA303U on the back of the unit. The systems are silver and include a combination radio, tape and CD player, and speakers with black cloth grills. The CX-NA303U unit measures about 10 inches wide, 12 inches high and 13 inches long. Electronics, department and discount stores nationwide sold the systems from March 1998 through July 1998 for about $200 to $250. Consumers should stop using the systems immediately and call AIWA America toll-free at (888) 619-9353 between 6 a.m. and midnight EDT seven days a week for instructions on returning the systems for free repair. CPSC, Lexington Furniture Announce Recall of Wooden Bunk Beds WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Lexington Furniture Industries of Lexington, N.C., is recalling about 58,000 wooden bunk beds. If the top bunk bed is mis-assembled, there could be a space between the end of the mattress and the end of the bed on the top bunk. This space could be large enough for a child's body to fall through, but small enough to entrap a child's head. Lexington Furniture has received one report of a child falling through the space between the end of the mattress and the end of the bed when set up as a twin bed. No injury was reported. To determine whether there is a space large enough to entrap a child, consumers should slide the mattress to either end of the top bunk and measure the space between the end of the mattress and the end of the bed. There should be no space of 3-1/2 inches or more between the end of the mattress and the end of the bed. The recalled bunk beds are twin size with the following brand names: Lexington, Devan, Young-Hinkle, Dixie and Henry Link. In most cases the brand names are stenciled on the inside frame of the bed. Announces Recall of "Mulan" Backpacks and Rolling Luggage WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, (CPSC), Pyramid Accessories Inc., of New York, N.Y., is recalling about 3,700 of Mulan backpacks and about 1,800 units of Mulan rolling luggage. The backpacks' and rolling luggage's artwork contains paint with high levels of lead, which is toxic if ingested by children. CPSC and Pyramid Accessories are not aware of any illnesses or injuries involving these products. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of illness or injury. Two styles of the backpacks are involved in the recall, each bearing artwork depicting the Disney character Mulan. One style has a fan-shaped, exterior envelope that partially covers Mulan's face. The other has a rectangular, exterior envelope below a standing character. The backpacks were sold in two colors: pink and purple. The rolling luggage is pink, about 18 inches long and bears the standing image of Mulan. Retail stores nationwide sold these items from June 1998 through July 1998. The backpacks sold for about $12 and $14, and the luggage sold for about $25 to $30. Consumers should immediately take these items away from children and return them to the place of purchase for a refund. The lens can crack when struck by a paintball, presenting a potential eye injury hazard to the paintball player. CPSC and Brass Eagle have received eight reports of lenses cracking. No injuries have been reported. This recall involves the lenses of the Brass Eagle's "Xtreme Vision 280" paintball masks, sold before April 1998. The eagle logo is imprinted into the forehead of the mask, and "Z Leader" is printed on the lens. "Brass Eagle by Z Leader" is printed on the strap. Item no. 7472 appears on the bottom of the box, in which the mask was sold. Sporting goods and discount department stores nationwide sold the masks from July 1997 to April 1998 for about $55. Consumers should stop using these paintball masks immediately. Announce Recall of Inflatable Kiddie Boats WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Kmart Corporation of Troy, Mich., is conducting a recall of approximately 90,000 "Splash Club" Deluxe Inflatable Kiddie Boats. The seat of these pool toys can tear, causing small children to unexpectedly fall into the water and possibly drown. Kmart has received four reports of the boat's seats tearing and causing children to fall into the water. No injuries have been reported. The Deluxe Inflatable Kiddie Boats are vinyl and consist of an orange inflatable circular tube with blue handles and a seat in the middle. The boats also have an inflatable, clear plastic barbell with various colored balls inside attached to the front of the boat. Writing on the boat includes, "KIDDIE BOAT . . INTRODUCES YOUR CHILD TO WATER . . . SPLASH CLUB," and has a picture of a dolphin jumping through a hoop. The boxes in which the boats were packaged are labeled with UPC Code 016438897204 or 016438100205 and Kmart Code 372954-115. Kmart stores nationwide sold the kiddie boats from September 1996 through July 1998 for about $10. Consumers' fingers can become entrapped and injured in the ball return's belt. CPSC and AMF have received 14 reports of children's fingers becoming entrapped in these ball returns. Injuries range from bruises and lacerations, to partial amputations and fractures. Sure-Pik ball returns were manufactured by AMF Inc. between 1973 and 1980 and are in approximately 238 bowling establishments, including military installations, nationwide. Sure-Pik is written on the side of the ball returns. For AMF-owned establishments, AMF will install plastic guards on either side of the Sure-Pik ball returns to raise the sides around the moving belt. Large warning labels will be placed on the guards. These labels are colorful pictographs warning children to keep their hands and fingers out of the ball return. For non-AMF-owned establishments, AMF will offer each owner the option of either obtaining the repair kit at cost, plus shipping and handling, or receiving a trade-in allowance of $900 toward the purchase of a new AMF C-90 ball return. AMF also will make special lease financing available for qualified owners. For all establishments using Sure-Pik ball returns, AMF will provide, free of charge, warning labels and a safety pamphlet on children's bowling. Owners of bowling establishments using Sure-Pik ball returns should contact AMF at (800) 342-5263 for information on participating in this recall program. Announce Recall of Rattles WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Michael Friedman Corp. of Brooklyn, N.Y. is recalling about 2,000 rattles. Small parts can break off of the rattles, presenting choking and aspiration hazards to infants. CPSC has received one report of a rattle separating and releasing small plastic balls from inside. No injury was reported. The recalled rattles are sold under the "Hobby Horse" brand name. The rattles, measuring 5.25 inches high, look like roses. A green stem-like handle extends from the bottom of the pink or purple "rose" and bends upon itself in a somewhat circular fashion to form a handle. The words "Hong Kong" are embossed on the lower portion of the "rose." The rattles were packaged in clear plastic shrink wrap attached to a purple polka dotted bluish cardboard header, labeled "Hobby Horse...Baby Rattle." Small children's clothing and discount stores nationwide sold the rattles from March 1997 to May 1998 for about $1 to $2. Consumers should take the rattles away from infants immediately and discard or destroy them, or if possible, return the rattles to the store where purchased for a refund. However, the firm, Michael Friedman Corp., is out of business and cannot be contacted.

There are two types of skillets being recalled: Eterna 12-inch stainless steel skillets and Endura 12-inch non-stick stainless steel skillets. These lighters have on/off switches that could be defective, allowing them to be ignited in the off position, and can stay lit after the ignition switch is released, possibly causing burns and unintentional fires. CPSC and Rite Aid are not aware of any injuries involving these butane lighters. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The recalled butane lighter, item number 4731589-V111, is approximately 11 inches long, has a black plastic base with red plastic trim and a metal igniter shaft. Writing on the lighter's side reads, "MADE IN CHINA." A red sticker on the lighter reads, "SUPER." The item number is written on the bottom of the packaging's cardboard backing. Rite Aid stores nationwide sold the lighters from March 1998 to May 1998 for about $2. Consumers with a recalled lighter should stop using it immediately and return it to any Rite Aid store for a full refund. Under normal scuba diving conditions, the hoses on these BCDs can separate from the jacket, and possibly cause drowning. Durapro systems is aware of three reports of these low-pressure inflator hoses separating from these BCDs. No injuries have been reported. These recalled Durapro Systems BCDs are the Cirrus, Stratus, Aruba, Slimline and Resort. The low-pressure hoses on the BCDs, part number 302, connects the first stage regulator to the BCD power inflator valve. These hoses are identified with the following markings: "PLIOVIC MULTI PURPOSE 1/4" 1/D (6.4 mm) 250 PSI WP (1.7 MPA)...MADE IN USA...GOODYEAR." Retail dive stores and a mail-order catalogue sold these BCDs from January 1996 through May 1998 for about $179 to $359. Consumers who purchased one of thesea Durapro Systems BCDs should stop using it immediately. The hose from the BCD should be returned to the dive store where purchased for a free replacement hose. The anoraks have paint on the zipper pull that contains an unacceptable level of lead. While exposure to the defective zippers presents no immediate health danger, exposure to high levels of lead over an extended period of time presents a potential poisoning hazard to young children if ingested. After several customers returned anoraks to the stores, GapKids determined that the zippers were not as originally specified to the manufacturer. GapKids is not aware of any illnesses or injuries involving this product. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of illness or injury. The anoraks being recalled have a "Made in Russia" label. They come in the following colors: white, yellow, pink, light blue, purple, red, navy, green and multi-colored. They come in a variety of children's sizes. A zippered travel pouch accompanies the jacket. The defective anoraks were sold in GapKids stores from January 1998 to June 2, 1998 throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. The recall does not include anoraks sold before January 1998. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of illness or injury. These hot dog-shaped pedal cars are orange and yellow, and measure about 46 inches in length. Grocery stores in the U.S. and Canada distributed many of these pedal cars through special promotions and also sold a small number by mail order from June 1995 through May 1998. The fuel canister assembly can cause the bamboo pole to ignite. Conros is aware of three incidents in Ontario, Canada, in which the bamboo pole caught on fire. No injuries or property damage was reported. The recall involves only those "Summer Lights" torches equipped with a refillable plastic fuel canister with a metal flame guard attached by a spring. "Summer Lights Torch...Refillable Fuel Canister," is written on the front of the plastic fuel canister. Consumers fill the fuel canisters with citronella and place them into a bamboo pole. Mass merchandise stores nationwide sold the torches from April through May 1998 for about $5. The purses contain a petroleum distillate, used as a decorative liquid in the purse flap, that could be harmful or fatal if ingested. CPSC and Payless are not aware of any injuries involving these purses. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The purses are made of clear plastic and measure about 5 inches long by 5 inches wide. The purses' flaps contain two bright colored liquids, glitter and decorative foil confetti. The purses were available with liquids in green and yellow, pink and orange, and purple and blue. Inside the purse are two tags: a warning label regarding the hazardous liquid in the purse, and a tag with the products' identification number, "3659," and the words, "Made in China." The purses were sold at Payless ShoeSource stores nationwide from Feb 1998 through May 1998 for about $8. Announce Recall of Bicycle Chains WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), SRAM Corp., of Chicago, Ill., is recalling about 25,000 Sachs bicycle chains. The chains can break, causing the rider to lose control of the bicycle, fall and be injured. SRAM Corp. has received nine reports of chains breaking resulting in two minor injuries, which occurred in the United Kingdom. The recalled chains are Sachs Power Chains (PC chains) with model numbers PC-41, PC-51, PC-61, PC-80R and PC-91, and are stamped with the date code "F." The model number and date code are stamped on each link of the chain, though are difficult to see. Consumers should have their chains inspected at a local bicycle dealer to determine if they are afffected by this recall. These chains were sold as part of various 1998 model Giant, Schwinn and Specialized Bicycles. Announce Recall of Super Clean Aerosol Foam WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Castrol North America Inc. of Wayne, N.J., is recalling about 338,500 cans of Super Clean aerosol foam. The defective cans could allow the cleaner to gradually leak out through the seams. Direct contact with the cleaner could burn or irritate consumers' eyes and skin. CPSC and Castrol have not received any reports of the cans leaking. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Only the 22-ounce aerosol cans of cleaner are being recalled. The can is mostly colored purple with a plastic purple cap. The labeling on the can reads in part, "Castrol Super Clean...Solubilizes Grease on Contact...Foam Tough Task Cleaner/Degreaser." Cautionary information on the back of the can advises consumers to "Wear gloves and eye protection." Large and small retail stores nationwide, including Advance Auto, Auto Zone, Chief Auto, CSK, Kmart, Pep Boys, Strauss Discount, Wal-Mart and Western Auto, sold the cleaner from January 1997 through March 1998 for about $3. These boilers' gas control valves, made by White-Rodgers, could have gas pressure settings that are too high. Incorrect gas pressure can cause the boiler to produce dangerous carbon monoxide, which can then leak, causing serious injury or death. Weil-McLain has received three reports of carbon monoxide detectors alarming due to the release of carbon monoxide from these boilers. No injuries or deaths have been reported. The Weil-McLain model GV gas boilers subject to this recall are equipped with certain White-Rodgers model 36C98-303 gas control valves with date codes 9621 through 9723. The date code and model number can be found on the unit's gas control valve, which is located at the front and center section of the boiler under the jacket. Also, all Weil-McLain GV boilers located at elevations more than 7,000 feet above sea level are being recalled. These boilers have "WEIL-McLAIN GOLD GV" written on the boiler jacket. Heating and cooling companies and contractors sold these boilers nationwide from June 1996 to November 1997 for about $1,500 to $3,000. Approximately 1,000 GV boilers were installed from June 1990 to January 1998 at locations above 7,000 feet elevation. Consumers should immediately check to see if they have a Weil-McLain GV boiler affected by this recall. For assistance in checking the boiler's gas valve model and date code, or for other additional information, consumers should call Weil-McLain at (219) 879-6561. If a consumer has an affected boiler, Weil-McLain will arrange for a free adjustment of the gas control valves' pressure setting.
