WASHINGTON, DC -- CPSC, General Sportcraft Ltd. and Foremost Sports Company, both of Bergenfield, NJ, are recalling a children's baseball practice stand called the "Batting Tee." The General Sportcraft labeled product was sold under the "Sportcraft" name and the Foremost labeled product was sold under the "Wilson" name. The Batting Tee game consists of a plastic batting stand that fits into a rubber base. A ball is tethered to an elastic cord. Attached to the other end of the cord is a 1-1/4-inch metal washer. The elastic cord passes through a slit in the rubber base and the washer fits into a recess in the underside of the base. The washer that holds the cord to the base may suddenly fly out of the slit when a child pulls on the ball or cord during normal use, striking a nearby player. CPSC has one report that a child was rendered legally blind in one eye after being struck by the washer from a Batting Tee. MARCH 15, 1993 Release # 93-048 PRODUCT: French Fry Cutters, item 11010403 sold in 450 Odd Lots/Big Lots stores and All for One stores. PROBLEM: Eight razor sharp cutting blades in the device are insecurely attached and present a laceration hazard. WHAT TO DO: Return the French Fry Cutter to any Odd Lots/Big Lots store or All For One store for a refund. WASHINGTON, DC -- CPSC, Consolidated Stores Corporation, of Columbus, OH is voluntarily recalling 37,656 manual French Fry Cutters. The cutting blades of the device are not securely attached and may present a laceration hazard. The French Fry Cutter consists of a plastic frame measuring four inches long and 2-3/4 inches wide. Eight razor sharp cutting blades are mounted in the frame. The person using the cutter places it on top of a raw potato and presses down on the sides of the cutter's plastic frame, causing the cutting blades to slice through the potato. The cutting blades are not securely attached on the bottom of the frame, and if the device is used upside down, the cutting blades will be driven out of the frame and into the user's hands as the cutter is pushed down onto the potato. The cutter is not marked to indicate which side is up. There have been five reported injuries associated with the French Fry Cutters. The injuries were hand lacerations. One injury reportedly required 11 stitches to close. The CPSC learned of the problem through a consumer complaint to its toll- free hotline. The French Fry Cutter sold in 450 Odd Lots/Big Lots stores and All For One stores in March and April of 1992. These stores were located east of the Mississippi River and in Missouri. The French Fry Cutters were sold attached to a blister card that was marked on the back of the card, "Dist. by: Midwestern Home Products, Inc., Wilmington, Delaware 19803 item No. 11010403 Made in Taiwan." There were no labels or markings on the cutters. The French Fry Cutters sold for $1.00. The French Fry Cutter may have been sold by a number of other retailers throughout the United States, however, they would not have borne the name "Midwestern Home Products". Consumers are urged to stop using the French Fry Cutters and return any bearing the name "Midwestern Home Products" to any Odd Lots/Big Lots store and any All For One store for a refund. FEBRUARY 15, 1993 Release # 93-042 PRODUCT: Sears Kenmore dishwashers sold after February 1990. PROBLEM: The dishwasher's timer may catch fire. There have been 30 reports of timer failures due to shorting out and overheating. Four units have developed fires resulting in smoke damage to the surrounding countertops and cabinets. WHAT TO DO: Consumers with affected dishwashers should immediately stop using them and call 1-800-998-8470 to arrange for free repair. WASHINGTON,DC -- CPSC, Sears Merchandise Group is voluntarily contacting customers regarding 21 Kenmore dishwasher models sold in the last three years that could experience a timer failure that may result in a fire hazard. Sears is providing free service to correct the problem. Currently, 30 units of about 400,000 units sold have experienced timer failures due to shorting out and overheating. To date, four units have developed fires which resulted in smoke damage to the surrounding countertop and cabinets. Sears has no reports of injuries due to the fires or timer failures. Sears said it is working closely with its source, Frigidaire Company, the manufacturer of the dishwasher and the supplier of the necessary new parts, to respond as quickly as possible to customer requests. Sears will be using additional technicians for service calls. On February 6, Sears began sending letters to more than 300,000 customers who purchased one of the affected Kenmore dishwasher models made between February 1990 and October 1992. Sears is asking customers who have not yet received letters to check the model of their dishwasher against the list below. Under certain circumstances, an overheated timer can cause a fire. To correct the problem, a Sears service technician will install new parts and inspect and replace other components as needed in the dishwasher door. Service will be done at no cost to the customer. The Halloween items are not equipped with child-resistant closures and the required warning labels are inconspicuous or absent. These products are all fuel burning lamps, intended for use as stand alone decorative lamps or as lamps to be placed inside carved pumpkins, contain liquid combustible petroleum distillates which can cause serious illness or death if ingested by a child. The model number 934 lamp is orange with black markings circling the orange container. An orange-colored chimney with black stars and jack-o-lantern around the circumference fits on the top of the container and is approximately the same diameter and height as the lamp. The model number 935 lamp is also orange in color and comes with a solid orange-colored and ribbed chimney. The lamp is decorated with black figures of bats, stars and carved pumpkins. Both lamps hold approximately 12 fluid ounces of petroleum distillate fuel. The model number 940 votive light is a solid orange color hard plastic container with no design on the container. Each votive light contains two fluid ounces of liquid petroleum distillate fuel. These lites are intended to be burned inside carved pumpkin jack-o-lanterns. None of the caps on these three styles of lamps is child- resistant as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. A warning label to alert consumers of the ingestion hazard and combustibility of the lamp fuel is required under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. The CPSC enforces the requirement that any prepackaged, low viscosity, liquid kindling fuels or illumination preparations, such as fuel for decorative or functional lanterns which contain 10 percent or more by weight of petroleum distillates, must be supplied with child-resistant packaging. CPSC became aware of this packaging problem as a result of its ongoing hazardous substances and poison prevention packaging inspection programs. Consumers should immediately return these products to the store where purchased for a refund of the purchase price. Approximately 55,000 of these three models of lamps were sold to retail, discount and chain stores nationwide in 1991 and 1992. The lamps are labeled with either "Janelle Products, Inc." or "Wisconsin Pharmacal Company, Inc." on the bottom of the container or on attached labels. Most of the lamps and votive lights have hazardous substance warning labels on the side of the container, but some warning labels may not be visible due to lack of contrasting coloring or may be missing altogether. Wisconsin Parmacal Company, Inc. initiated the recall of these lamps because of the potential hazard to children from drinking the liquid in the lamps dueto the lack of child- resistant packaging. Neither the recalling firm nor the Commission is aware of any ingestion or poisoning incidents due to the Sundown brand liquid candles. The Commission is aware of several ingestions and at least one death since 1990 from similar products
October 15, 1992 Release # 93-003 PRODUCT: Dial Manufacturing, Incorporated's model D5500 all blue evaporative water cooler pumps sold in 1990 and 1991 with "1990 Taiwan" inscribed on bottom. PROBLEM: Some of the pumps may have misaligned motor bearings that cause the pumps to fail and under certain conditions, catch fire. WHAT TO DO: Call 1-800-350-3425 and ask for the returned goods department or write to Dial Manufacturing, Inc., 2252 Grand Av., Phoenix, Arizona 85009 for a free replacement. WASHINGTON, DC -- Dial Manufacturing, Inc. of Phoenix, AZ, CPSC, has voluntarily initiated a replacement program for 150,000 Model D5500 evaporative water cooler pumps sold in 1990 and 1991. Some of the pumps may have misaligned motor bearings that could cause the pumps to fail and, under certain conditions, catch fire. A total of 119 pump fires have been reported to Dial since 1990. Ninety-eight of the fires reported occurred in the El Paso, Texas area. Most of the fires resulted in property damage to the cooler cabinets and/or home roofs. No injuries were reported. Evaporative coolers, commonly known as swamp coolers, are designed to blow moist cool air through ducts into a residence. They are generally found in the drier climates of the western and southwestern United States. The box shaped evaporative cooler cabinets are constructed of plastic or metal and are often installed on top of house roofs. A water cooler pump such as the Dial D5500 model is located inside the cooler cabinet. The pump functions to draw supplied water from the reservoir at the bottom of the cabinet to the distribution system at the top. Water then saturates the cooling pads located vertically inside the vented cabinet. Outside air is cooled and humidified as it is pulled through the pads by the cabinet blower. The blower then forces the moist cool air into the house. Because of the corrosive nature of the cooler environment, economy pumps such as the D5500 reportedly last only one season. However, some of these pumps are still in service. The 1990 Dial D5500 cooler pump has a blue plastic housing and has "1990 Taiwan" inscribed on the base plate. Consumers who identify this blue cooler pump should stop using their evaporative coolers until the pump is replaced. Dial will replace any 1990 blue D5500 cooler pump free of charge with a new 1991 red and white D5500 pump or a 1992 red and white D5000 pump. Consumers should call Dial toll free at 1-800-350-3425 and ask for the returned goods department or write to Dial at 2252 Grand Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona 85009. CPSC is announcing this replacement program as part of its mission to protect the public from the unreasonable risks of injury and death associated with consumer products. The Commission's objective is to reduce the estimated 28.5 million injuries and 21,600 deaths associated each year with the 15,000 different types of consumer products under CPSC's jurisdiction

The slides involved are on the "Hedstrom Big T" swing sets and on Sears brand T-style gym sets manufactured by Hedstrom. Guards are not available for any of these slides since all of these firms are out of business. If you own any of these products, stop using and discard them immediately. The Hedstrom Corporation received a report that a three year- old-girl strangled when her mitten strings, which were strung through her coat, caught at the point where the handrail attaches to the Big T slide. In addition, the Commission is aware of a hood string of a child's jacket that became entangled in the handrail attachment area of an older, similarly-designed slide whose brand could not be identified.
