CPSC, Fisher-Price Announce Recall of Basketball Sets WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Fisher-Price, of East Aurora, N.Y., is recalling about 55,000 basketball sets to replace the nets. Some of the nets have enlarged openings. If children put their heads into these enlarged openings, the net can get tangled around their necks and they could strangle. Fisher-Price has not received any reports of injuries. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries. The recalled Grow-to-Pro Basketball set has a black pole that adjusts from 3 to 6 feet. A nylon net with an orange plastic hoop is attached to the pole, along with a gray backboard. The Fisher-Price logo is on the front of the backboard; and the model number, 72408, along with the words, "Made in U.S.A." are on the other side of the backboard. Toy, mass merchandise and discount stores sold these toys nationwide from January 2001 through May 2001 for about $30. Consumers should stop using the basketball set immediately. Announce Recall to Replace Padlocks and Cable Gun Locks WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Sturm, Ruger & Co. Inc., of Southport, Conn. is voluntarily recalling 1.2 million padlocks and 800,000 cable gun locks that bear the "Ruger" name. The padlocks can be opened using keys other than those originally provided with the locks and the cable locks can be opened if struck with force potentially allowing unauthorized access to a firearm. Ruger is aware of three incidents where a consumer was able to open a padlock without the use of its designated key. No injuries have been reported. Lockable boxes using these padlocks were shipped by Ruger with its pistols and revolvers from 1987 until 1995. The red cable locks were shipped with Ruger rifles and shotguns from 1998 until March 2001. These locks were distributed nationwide. Ruger began its voluntary lock replacement program in March 2001. CPSC, Vermont Castings, Majestic Products Announce Recall of Space Heaters WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Vermont Castings, Majestic Products (VCMP), of Ontario, Canada, recalled about 3,900 space heaters. Overheating inside the space heaters can cause the exterior to become extremely hot, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers. VCMP had received three reports of the space heaters overheating, resulting in scorched floors and wall coverings. No injuries have been reported The recalled heaters are white with a silver grill cover. The vent-less heaters have the name "Vermont Castings" on the label directly below the grill. The heater model numbers start with the letters VBVH or VPVH and can be found on a rating plate on the left side of the heater. Independent retailers in the southeastern U.S. sold these recalled heaters from August 2000 to January 2001 for $200 to $400. Consumers should stop using the heaters immediately and discard or destroy them. The company is no longer in business and a remedy is no longer available.

Liquid can enter the indicator light and can cause sparking and flaming in the light, presenting a fire hazard to consumers. Maytag has received fifteen reports of flames in the indicator lights. No injuries have been reported. The recalled electric ranges are 30-inch free-standing units with the control panel in the front between the door panel and main top. The Crosley brand name ranges have model numbers CE35000AAW or CE35000AAT, and the Magic Chef brand name ranges have model numbers CER1110AAT or CER1110AAH. The brand names can be found on the control panel or the back guard panel and the model number can be located by opening the storage drawer and looking at the tag on the left side. Appliance stores and distributors nationwide sold the ranges from January 2000 through March 2001 for between $270 and $290. Consumers should stop using their electric ranges immediately and disconnect power to them. Announce Recall of Notebook Computer Batteries WASHINGTON, D.C.- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Dell Computer Corp., of Austin, Texas, is voluntarily recalling about 284,000 batteries used in notebook-style personal computers. These batteries can overcharge, causing them to become very hot, release smoke, and possibly catch fire. Dell has received one report of a battery overcharging, resulting in minor property damage. No injuries have been reported. The recalled batteries were sold in Dell Inspiron 5000 and 5000e notebook computers and sold separately for use in both of these systems. The words, "DELL," "MADE IN JAPAN," and "Inspiron 5000 Battery Module" are printed on the top of the batteries. An identification number is written on a colored sticker at the rear of the battery. Those batteries that have colored stickers containing either the number "99" or the series "00 51" or less, and the letter "P" in the first line, are being recalled. Dell sold these batteries nationwide through catalogs and over the Internet from January 2000 through March 2001. The computers with these batteries were sold for between $2,100 and $3,100, and individual batteries were sold for between $100 and $130. The pedals on these bicycles can loosen and fall off while riding, resulting in serious injury to the rider. Dynacraft and CPSC have received 31 reports of pedals falling off, causing the riders to fall. Injuries to riders include a concussion, broken bones, sprains, abrasions, a laceration and muscle strain. These are men's and women's Magna Equator mountain bicycles. The 26- inch, 18-speed bicycles have the model names "Magna" and "Equator" written on the green-colored women's and red-colored men's bicycle frames in black lettering. Only women's bicycles with model numbers 8546-84 and men's bicycles with model number 8547-19, both of which were manufactured from December 1999 through May 2000, are included in the recall. A label affixed to the frame near the crank housing shows the model, month and year of manufacture. Toys R Us stores nationwide sold these bicycles from January 2000 through mid-April 2001 for about $69. Consumers should stop using these bicycles immediately, and call Dynacraft to receive a free replacement pedal/crank set and to arrange for free installation. The overpressure valve can stick in the open position, presenting a drowning hazard to divers. Sheico has received one report of a valve sticking open. No injuries have been reported. Inc., of Vandalia, Ohio, is recalling about 3.4 million Joyride® infant car seats/carriers. When the seat is used as an infant carrier, the handle can unexpectedly release, causing the seat to flip forward. When this happens, an infant inside the carrier can fall to the ground and suffer serious injuries. There have been 240 reports, in the United States, of handles unexpectedly releasing, resulting in 97 injuries. These reports include skull fractures, concussions, a broken leg, and numerous scratches and bruises."Evenflo is offering a free repair to prevent the seat from flipping forward," said CPSC Chairman Ann Brown. "It's an easy repair to make, and it is designed to protect your baby from a very serious injury.""Riding in a car seat in the vehicle's rear seat is the safest way to transport young children in a motor vehicle," said NHTSA Executive Director Bob Shelton. "The recall announced today is related to only using the seat as a carrier and not to how the seat performs while in a car. Boiling water can be expelled from the kettle's spout, presenting a burn hazard to consumers. Kmart has received 14 reports of boiling water being expelled, resulting in three minor burn injuries. The recalled tea kettles were sold under the MARTHA STEWART EVERYDAY brand name, and are stainless steel or white, sage, or slate colored porcelain. The words, "MSE Thailand" are printed on the knob attached to the lid of the kettle. Kmart sold the tea kettles nationwide from October 2000 through March 2001 for about $25 to $30. Consumers should stop using these tea kettles immediately and return them to any Kmart store for a refund. Creative Consumer Concepts Inc. manufactured these toys, which were distributed with kids' meals at Whataburger Restaurants. The clear, plastic lens covers on these compass toys can come off and pose a choking hazard to young children.Creative Consumer Concepts, Inc. has received four reports of the lens covers of the compass toys coming off. No injuries have been reported.The "Whatagear" compass is a plastic toy with a compass in its center. The toys have varied features, such as flashlights, magnifying lenses or tools. They come in various solid colors. The back of the compass reads, "WHATAGEAR" and "WHATABURGER."Whataburger Restaurants in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas distributed the toys from March 2001 through April 2001.Parents should take these toys away from children immediately, and return the toy to any Whataburger Restaurant for a free replacement toy. The front-suspension forks on these bicycles can break during use, resulting in serious injury.Dynacraft has received 33 reports of the front-suspension forks on these bicycles breaking, resulting in 32 injuries that included a blood clot in the brain, broken bones, cuts, bruises and chipped teeth.These 20-inch, 21-speed, dual-suspension bicycles have the model name "NEXT SHOCKZONE" written on their orange frame in black lettering. A label on the frame near the crank housing reads, "Distributed by Dynacraft Industries" and "Made in China." Only the orange bicycles with model number 8536-33 are included in this recall. The model number is written on another label on the frame near the crank housing.Wal-Mart stores sold these bicycles nationwide from September 1999 through March 2001 for about $130.Consumers should stop using these bicycles immediately, and call Dynacraft to receive a free replacement fork and to arrange for free installation. The plastic protective shell of these guards can break when it is hit against a hard surface, resulting in impact injuries to the wrestler's head.ASICS TIGER Corp. has received 10 reports of the plastic shells of these guards breaking, resulting in three injuries. The injuries reported include cuts and abrasions to the side of the head and ear.The recall involves ASIC Gel Wrestling Ear Guard with Neoprene. The guard includes two plastic ear pieces covered with neoprene nylon. The ASICS red logo is on a label on the guard's strap. A gold label inside the guard reads, "MADE IN CHINA." A date code can be found written on the neoprene nylon underneath the outer rim of the ear piece. The recalled guards have date codes beginning with "98" or "99." The guards are white, red, purple, black, navy blue, royal blue, green or gold.Sports specialty and team sport stores, and team sport catalogs sold these guards nationwide from June 1998 through March 2001 for about $25.Consumers should stop using these ear guards immediately, and return them to the store where purchased or to the firm for a free replacement. Fabric used in these costumes can ignite readily and presents a serious risk of burn injuries in violation of the Federal Flammable Fabrics Act.CPSC and Disney are aware of two reports of costumes igniting, resulting in one burn injury to a 4-year-old girl.The Princess Ariel costume has a green skirt with two layers of netting on top and a sequined purple metallic bodice with a picture of Ariel. The costumes were sold in youth sizes 2-4, 4-6X and 8-10. The neckline labels read "The Disney Store."The Disney Store sold the costumes for Halloween from July 2000 through October 2000. These dehumidifiers have an internal electrical connection that can overheat, presenting a potential fire hazard to consumers.LG Electronics has received seven reports of dehumidifiers overheating, including four reports of fire within the units, with smoke damage to surrounding objects. No injuries have been reported. The recalled dehumidifiers are white, with a red auto shut off button, and regulators for fan speed and humidity control. The dehumidifiers were manufactured between November 1998 and May 1999, and have the following brand names and model numbers: Goldstar DH2510, DH4010 and DH5010; General Electric AHG25LAG1, AHG40LAG1 and AHG50LAG1; and Sears Kenmore 580.59600890 (60-pint model only). The brand name is located to the left of the control unit. The model number is located behind the condensate bucket, on a sticker on the left hand side.Mass merchandise and department stores nationwide sold the dehumidifiers from January 1999 through December 1999 for between $100 and $200.Consumers should stop using the dehumidifiers immediately and call LG Electronics toll-free (800) 651-1602 anytime for a free repair. Cable Light Switches - Light Tech, of Grand Rapids, Mich., is recalling about 350,000 on/off switches that were included in cable lights packages. "Cable lights," also known as rope lights, are lights inside a plastic cord used for decorative lighting. The on/off switches for the cable lights were included as an optional accessory for consumers to attach to the power cords. They consist of a rectangular white plastic box about 1¼ inches long. The box contains a wheel-type switch through the middle that rotates to turn the power on and off. The switches were included in 36-inch and 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24-foot lengths in power pack kits, which are designed for use with bulk cable lights. The cable lights are clear and have the words "Cable LightsTM" written on the plastic tubing. Home center stores, including Home Depot, Lowe's, and other lighting showrooms, sold these cable light and power cord kits nationwide from September 1997 through October 2000 for about $12 to $65 for the Cable Lights and $7 to $9 for the power cord kits.
