Announce Recall to Repair Side Rails on Baby Cribs WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), C & T International Inc. of Palisades Park, N.J., is recalling about 800 full-size wooden baby cribs to repair their side rails. The side rails can loosen and separate, creating a space greater than 2-3/8 inches between the slats. Babies could be strangled if their heads become entrapped between the slats. In addition, babies could be seriously injured if they fall out of the crib. CPSC is aware of five reports where the cribs' side rails were missing or loose. No injuries have been reported. There are two crib models being recalled. The Tracy model (item 800) is a wooden sleigh crib available in a white, natural, whitewash, or cognac finish. The Christine model (item 210) is a wooden rocker crib available in a white, natural, or whitewash finish. The manufacturer's identification, which includes the item number, is located on the inside headboard of the crib. Juvenile product stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and Florida sold the cribs from February 1994 through March 1996 for about $350. Consumers should stop using the cribs immediately and call C & T toll-free at (888) 470-1260 between 9 a.m and 5 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday for free replacement rails.

Announce Teddy Bear Recall WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), The Mazel Co. of Solon, Ohio, is voluntarily recalling about 835 Teddy Precious Indian girl and boy stuffed bears. The bears' Native American style clothing has beads on the headband and at the waist or neck. The beads can detach and young children can choke on the beads or inhale them into their lungs, which could lead to death. CPSC is not aware of any injuries involving these toys. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The light brown bears, measuring approximately 18 inches in length, each wear a brown vinyl dress or shirt and pants trimmed with Native American embroidery and a headband patterned with matching embroidery. A label sewn to each bear's foot reads, "Teddy Precious ." The bears each have a sewn-in tag that reads in part, "DANDEE INTERNATIONAL LIMITED...MADE IN CHINA." Some tags also include "SKU # 089318" (girl) or "SKU # 089334" (boy). Independent discount and 50-Off stores sold the bears nationwide from July 1996 through December 1996 for about $13. Consumers should take the bears away from young children immediately and return the bears to the store where purchased for a full refund or a replacement toy. Announce Recall to Replace Food Dehydrators WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), K-Tel International (USA) Inc. of Plymouth, Minn., announced a replacement program for 75,000 food dehydrators. The food dehydrator can overheat, presenting a fire hazard. K-Tel is aware of nine incidents resulting in seven fires. One person was injured by smoke inhalation. The recall program involved the Deluxe Dehydrator with Fan, model no. 80043. The round, white plastic appliance measures 13 inches in diameter with a 3-inch thick base and a gray plastic lid. The base is labeled in part, "K-TEL...Style No. LD 1010..." The base is stacked with five trays with holes in the center. Each tray contains a gray plastic tray on which fruit, vegetables, or meat can be dried. Retail stores and telemarketers sold the dehydrators nationwide from October 1993 to December 1995 for $30 to $40. Consumers who own the K-Tel Food Dehydrator with Fan, model no. 80043, should stop using it immediately. The company is out of business, and cannot be contacted. Please destroy or discard the product. K-Tel has already notified consumers who purchased the recalled food dehydrator through telemarketing. This notice is being issued to inform consumers who purchased the food dehydrator at retail stores about the recall program.

Announce Novelty Product Recalls WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Shelby Ltd., Division of Wang's International, of Memphis, Tenn., recalled about 40,000 paperweights and pens because they contain kerosene or other petroleum distillates and many were sold to children. If the paperweights or pens break and leak, the liquid can be hazardous if inhaled into the lungs or swallowed. The liquid could also be combustible, presenting a flammability hazard. Shelby Ltd. has received at least 10 reports of the paperweights breaking and releasing their contents. No injuries have been reported. The plastic paperweights came in the following five styles: Ocean In The Box, Floating Eye, Antique Car, Magic Diamond, and Water Timer. The paperweights were individually packaged in cardboard boxes bearing the name of the style. The pen, which is clear plastic with an eyeball in the middle, is packaged in a cellophane wrap and bears no labeling. The paperweights and pen were sold nationwide through school stores to children from kindergarten through the sixth grade from October through December 1996 for about $4 to $5. Consumers should take the paperweights and pens away from children immediately, and discard or destroy them. The firm is out of business and cannot be contacted.

Announce Hair Dryer Recall WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Best International Corp. of Long Island City, N.Y., is recalling approximately 5,000 hand held hair dryers. Since these dryers do not have a full immersion protection plug, they present a risk of electrocution if dropped in water while the dryer is in the "on" position. The hair dryers also present a fire hazard due to inadequate wiring. Before the use of immersion protection devices, there were an average of 18 electrocutions involving hand-held hair dryers each year. Since the introduction of immersion protection devices for hand-held hair dryers, the number decreased to two electrocution deaths in 1992. The current voluntary industry standard, which has been in effect since January 1, 1991, requires hand-held hair dryers to provide full immersion protection when either in the "on" or "off" position. The recalled dryers do not have this protection. CPSC and Best International Corp. are not aware of any injuries involving these hair dryers. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The white colored plastic hair dryers come with dryer attachments in a box labelled, "International Hair Styling Set with 7 Attachments...HD-868." The hair dryer has the words "Professional Styler Asbestos Free" printed on it. Retailers in the metropolitan New York area, such as bargain, discount, and $.99 stores, sold these hair dryers from November 1995 to May 1996 for $9.99. Consumers should stop using the recalled hair dryers immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund. For more information, consumers should call Best International Corp. at (718) 472-0860 from 1 to 5 p.m. EST. When buying a hair dryer, consumers should look for a large, rectangular-shaped plug at the end of the cord. The certification mark of a recognized testing laboratory should also be visible on the hair dryer or on the hair dryer's packaging. However, even with this improved protection, under no circumstances should consumers use a hair dryer where it could come in contact with water. Electricity and water are a potentially deadly combination.

This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The brown or white extension cords were available in a variety of lengths, including a brown 6-foot model no. 441, a brown 9-foot model no. 442, a brown 12-foot model no. 443, a brown 20-foot model no. 445, a white 9-foot model no. 447, and a white 12-foot model no. 448. The lighters do not have safety devices that prevent young children from igniting the lighters. CPSC and Paik International are not aware of any injuries involving these cigarette lighters. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The non-refillable disposable cigarette lighters have red, yellow, green, blue, or purple plastic bodies. A paper label on the lighter reads, "CAUTION...MADE IN CHINA." Convenience and retail stores in New York sold these cigarette lighters from June 1995 to April 1996 for less than $1 each. Consumers should stop using the cigarette lighters immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund. CPSC's standard for child-resistant lighters, which went into effect on July 12, 1994, is intended to reduce the 150 deaths, 1,000 injuries, and more than 5,000 residential fires caused annually by children under the age of five playing with lighters. The cord's wires are undersized, making them unsuitable for use as extension cords because they cannot carry the same load as properly constructed extension cords. The recalled cords present a fire, shock and electrocution hazard. In addition, the cords are made with a plastic that, once ignited, continues to burn and spread flames. CPSC and Sprint International, Inc. are not aware of any injuries involving these extension cords. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The brown or white extension cords measure 6 feet (item AC-67-6), 12 feet (item AC-67-12), 15 feet (item AC-67-15), or 20 feet (item AC-67-20). The cords are labelled in part, "SPT-2 ... 18AWGX2C." March 25, 1996 Release # 96-085 WASHINGTON, D.C. - CPSC, Bill's Dollar Stores of Jackson, Miss., is recalling approximately 12,000 hand-held hair dryers that do not contain an immersion protection plug, which can prevent electrocution if the dryers are dropped in water.Each year, between 15 and 20 people are electrocuted by hand-held hair dryers. Most of these deaths occurred when a hair dryer was immersed in water while the victim was bathing. About half of the electrocutions involved children under ten years old.The current voluntary industry standard, which has been in effect since January 1, 1991, requires hand-held hair dryers to provide full immersion protection when in either the "on" or "off" position. The recalled dryers do not have this protection.Bill's Dollar Stores sold the hand-held hair dryers throughout the southern United States between May 1995 and February 1996 for $5 each. The hair dryers were labeled either "International Professional Styler" or "Acesonic Professional Styler." Consumers who own the hair dryers should stop using them and return the dryers to any Bill's Dollar Store for an exchange or refund.When buying a hair dryer, consumers should look for a large, rectangular-shaped plug at the end of the cord. September 6, 1995 Release # 95-162 WASHINGTON, D.C. - CPSC and 17 importers announced today the stop sale and recall of 375,000 dangerously flammable sheer rayon scarves. This is the largest clothing recall CPSC has ever conducted under the Flammable Fabrics Act. The sale of these scarves violates the federal Flammable Fabrics Act and the scarves present a serious risk of burn injuries. In fact, these scarves typically burn faster than newspaper.The scarves, which were made in India and sold nationwide, are long, flowing, sheer rayon chiffon scarves. The scarves, sold for between $2 and $28 at nearly 2,000 large chain stores and small boutiques nationwide, including those listed in this release. The majority of the scarves bear the "Fashionique II" label, although not all rayon scarves with this label are violative of the law. All of the violative scarves are labeled "Made in India" and "100 percent rayon" or "65 percent rayon/35 percent metallic."CPSC is working with a number of importers and retailers to recall these scarves. In addition, where appropriate, CPSC staff will seek penalties against importers or retailers who knowingly violated the Flammable Fabrics Act. Although CPSC has not received any reports of injuries from these scarves to date, the agency is issuing this safety notice and recalling the scarves to prevent injuries from these dangerous products.CPSC urges consumers to immediately stop wearing scarves they believe may be involved in this recall. These flammable, sheer, rayon chiffon scarves should be returned to the retailers where they were purchased. Retailers taking part in this recall will provide a refund, credit or information on returning the scarf for a replacement.Any sheer, rayon chiffon scarf with the following description and general label information may be involved in this recall: General Label Information: - "Made in India." - "100 percent rayon" or "65 percent rayon/35 percent metallic". - "Fashionique II" brand name. December 1, 1994 Release # 95-034 WASHINGTON, D.C. - CPSC, Big Save International Corp., of Los Angeles, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 1,000 toy trucks.The toy truck was identified during a joint CPSC and U.S. Customs surveillance at the port of Long Beach, Calif. CPSC testing found that the toy contained small parts that present a potential choking hazards to young children.The multicolored plastic truck is approximately 8 inches long with a removable drive and passenger seat set. The truck is equipped with a plastic hammer, screw driver, and wrench and plastic screws, bolts, and nails. A decal on each side of the truck reads, "Play Tool Truck." The underside of the truck is embossed with "No. 3009" and "Made in China." The truck is packaged in a cardboard container labeled in part, "... Educational Play Tool Truck... NO. 3009... MADE IN CHINA." The toy was imported from China and sold in Indiana and Alabama from August 1994 to November 1994 at independent toy and retail stores for $3.95. The toy should be taken away from young children immediately and destroyed, discarded, or if possible, returned to the store where purchased for a full refund. March 3, 1994 Release # 94-042 PRODUCT: Approximately 2,000 one-pint bottles of "Beef-Iron and Wine" liquid dietary supplement distributed through health food and nutrition stores nationwide from January 1, 1993 through December 1, 1993 by Metro International Distributors, Inc. PROBLEM: The recalled bottles lack child-resistant packaging. A child could accidentally ingest too much iron at one time, leading to serious illness or death. WHAT TO DO: Return unused portions of the recalled product to the place of purchase for a replacement bottle with child-resistant packaging or for a full refund. Approximately 2,000 bottles of the recalled iron product were sold to consumers through retail health food and nutrition stores nationwide between January 1, 1993 and December 1, 1993. The "Baby Bunny" is approximately six inches tall and is held in the arms of Ma Bunny. The toy was purchased as part of an Easter basket, model number BK101. The Easter baskets also included a variety of candy and novelty items and were sold nationwide by retail gift and specialty stores during the 1988 and 1989 Easter seasons. The "Ma and Baby Bunny" toy was not included with Easter baskets sold during the 1990 Easter season and will not be included in Easter baskets sold during the 1991 Easter season. Recalls Musical Ice Cream Vans And Lovely Dolls WASHINGTON, DC -- TAI TUNG INTERNATIONAL, INC. of Los Angeles, CA is voluntarily recalling its Musical Ice Cream Vans, Model #TT-28A and Lovely Dolls, Models D13/3 and C1372 because of small parts that could break off the toys if a child drops them. These small parts could be a fatal choking hazard to young children. Some of the small parts also have sharp points that could cause puncture or laceration injuries to children. This recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Musical Ice Cream Car - Model TT-28A (made in China) resembles a large toy delivery van. It is bright red in color with brightly colored decals pasted on the front, sides, back, and top of the vehicle depicting ice cream treats and identifying the toy as a "Musical Ice Cream Car". In the rear of the van is a crank mechanism to wind-up a moving scene which is displayed through a clear plastic window on the driver's side of the van and the music box which plays as the van moves along the floor. The toy is also equipped with a pull cord that is stored in a compartment under the vehicle. Embossed on the bottom of the van is "1984, U.K. REG. NO. 1022370, U.S. PATENT PENDING..." The body of these plastic vehicles will break if dropped causing small parts with sharp points posing a serious choking and/or laceration hazard to young children. Approximately 48,210 Musical Ice Cream Cars have been sold nationwide for $12.00 each since May 1987. Lovely Doll - Model D13/3 (made in China) consists of three five- inch plastic female dolls with rooted nylon hair (either blond or dark brown in color) with painted-on eyes. They are wearing one- piece brightly colored fabric dresses and plain panties. The set comes with a brush and comb and is sold in a soft plastic see- through bag with fabric handle and trim. The arms of these dolls come off easily and could present a fatal choking hazard to young children.Lovely Doll - Model C1372 (made in China) consists of two dolls (one five inches and one 10-1/2 inches tall) with rooted hair. The larger doll has eyes that open and close and cries when it is tipped over. These dolls are clothed in pastel-colored one-piece fabric dresses with plain white panties and socks. The smaller doll has painted-on eyes and is clothed in a brightly colored one-piece fabric dress with plain white panties and no socks. The dolls are sold in soft plastic see-through bags with plastic carrying straps and come with a plastic comb and brush set. A tag attached to one of the dolls in the package identifies them as "Lovely Dolls" along with the model number. The arms of the small dolls come off easily and could present a fatal choking hazard to young children. Approximately 7,560 Lovely Doll Model D13/3 and 29,376 Lovely Doll Model C1372 have been sold nationwide since February 1989. Both models sold for under $3.00 each. Neither the CPSC nor the company is aware of any injuries involving these products. This voluntary recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. May 10, 1990 Release # 90-093 O'Brien Recalls Pro Flow Water Ski Bindings On Selected 1989 Skis Washington, D.C.-- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), O'Brien International of Redmond WA has announced a product recall of Pro Flow waterski bindings sold after September 1, 1988 and before December 31, 1989. The Pro Flow bindings are on O'Brien TRC, Competitor X, Pro Circuit and Splendor slalom models skis. Five skiers have reported injuries associated with Pro Flow binding which pulled apart and exposed sharp screws which caused foot lacerations. The Pro Flow waterski bindings have a high wrap, open toe boot design. The words "Pro Flow" and the O'Brien trademark "O" are located above the three horizontal white stripes on the heel of the binding. Only those O'Brien bindings with the white stripes on the boots are involved. Consumers who have this model O'Brien waterski binding should call O'Brien's consumer recall action line (1-800-284-SKIS) with questions and for repair instructions. The consumer will be provided with a repair kit and instructions to fix the potential problem or the owner can have the bindings repaired by a local authorized dealer or O'Brien International. May 9, 1990 Release # 90-094 Toy Public Telephone Recalled By Goldwell International WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Goldwell International, Inc., Los Angeles, CA is voluntarily recalling 13,583 Public Telephone toys because of small parts (coins and push buttons) that could pose a fatal choking hazard to young children. The plastic toy telephone, Model #WM-3922, is constructed to resemble a coin-operated pay telephone with a gold dial on the front and a receiver on the side. A coin return lever is located on the front left side. A cord is attached to the top so that the unit can be hung on a wall. In the middle of the dial is a picture of a telephone receiver and the word "HELLO." There are three coin slots at the top indicating 25, 10 and 5 cents. There are three multi-colored push buttons located in the lower front which activate a squeaker. The toy comes with plastic coins in a variety of sizes and colors. Embossed on the back of the unit are the words "MADE IN KOREA." The Public Telephones were sold nationwide since March 1989 for $9.99. The box was age labeled for children under three years. Neither the CPSC nor the company is aware of any injuries involving this product. This voluntary recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury.
