CONTACT: April 18, 1990 (301) 504-7908 Release # 90-075 Henry Gordy International Recalls Eggscavators Toy Trucks WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Henry Gordy International, Plainfield, New Jersey is voluntarily recalling 40,000 Eggscavators Toy Trucks because the mixer on the cement truck may detach posing a choking hazard to young children. The product known as "Eggscavators" (Item Number 187) is a set of three plastic construction vehicles. Each set includes one of each of the following (colors may vary): - A dump truck with blue wheels, blue body and yellow dumper. - A cement truck with blue wheels, red body and yellow mixer. - A bulldozer with blue wheels, yellow body and red dumper and steering wheel. Embossed on the bottom of each vehicle are the words "MADE IN HONGKONG". The cement and dump trucks have white sticker labels on them that read "EGGScavators". Each vehicle is two inches wide and two and one-half inches long. These egg-shaped construction trucks have been sold nationwide since 1987 for under $2.00 a set. Neither the CPSC nor the company is aware of any injuries involving this product. This voluntary recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Consumers are urged to take these toys away from young children immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. These potentially hazardous toys were reported to CPSC by the Oregon State Public Interest Reseach Group

March 26, 1990 Release # 90-056 International Marketing Source, Inc. Recalls 600 Alphabet Block Sets WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), International Marketing Source, Inc., Franklin Park, Illinois, is voluntarily recalling 600 alphabet block sets because the set's frame may separate and result in small parts that could present a fatal choking hazard to young children. The wood toy from China was distributed primarily in the midwestern states during 1989 for about $5.00 each. The product consists of 30 blocks in rows of six with painted pictures, letters, and numbers on each side mounted on a frame with dowels. Plastic ring/washers separate each block. Red letters on the top of the frame read "Learn The Alphabet". Neither the CPSC nor the company is aware of any injuries involving this product. This voluntary recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Consumers are urged to take these toys away from young children and return them to the store where purchased for a refund of the purchase price. Heartline Recalls Kensington Bear NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 19, 1989 Release # 89-087 Heartline Recalls Kensington Bear WASHINGTON, DC. -- Heartline, a division of Graphics International, Inc., Kansas City, MO is recalling the "Kensington Bear," Model S7417. The 14-inch stuffed bear, sold in gift and other speciality stores, may pose a potential choking hazard for children under age three because of heart-shaped buttons which may detach from the bear's dress. There have been no reports of injury. The brown bear, part of the Kensington Bear collection, is wearing a maroon print dress with white lace bloomers and a straw hat with a pink bow. Three heart-shaped buttons are sewn on the front of the bear's dress. Pink and blue ribbon also trims the bottom of the dress. There is no stock number attached to the bear. The hang tag attached to the product reads "The Kensington Bears". If consumers wish to keep the bear, they can eliminate the potential hazard by removing and disposing of the buttons. Consumers who want to return the bear to Heartline for a full refund may call toll-free 1-800-821-7200 to receive a return mailing label or request additional information about this recall. Approximately 1,800 bears have been sold to retailers Nationwide since January 1988.

Recalls Fruit Drink Because Of Potential Choking Hazards WASHINGTON, DC -- The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Mackie International Inc. of Paramount, California is voluntarily recalling their plastic toy gun, "Chilly Bang Bang Fruit Drink" because it may pose a potential choking hazard to young children. The opening tab at the end of the gun barrel separates and is a small part which could be ingested by small children and cause choking. Approximately 30,000 toy guns were sold in retail stores nationwide from April through May 1989 for approximately $.30 each. The toy guns should be taken away from children immediately and returned to the retail store where purchased for a full refund. The possible small parts problem was brought to the Commission's and the company's attention by the Empire State Consumer Association. The Hazardous Product Task Force of the New York Attorney General's office worked together with the CPSC and the company on the corrective action plan. While neither the CPSC nor Mackie International, Inc. is aware of any injuries associated with the toy gun, the recall is undertaken as a preventive measure.

Rattle Caps For Baby Soap & Cologne Recalled by Orion NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 15, 1989 Release # 89-055 Choking Hazard Firm Recalls Rattle Caps For Baby Soap, Cologne WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Bottle caps designed as rattles on containers of "Para Mi Bebe" bath soap and cologne for infants are being voluntarily recalled because of a potential choking hazard to infants. Testing showed that the plastic caps could shatter and release small beads and plastic pieces. A replacement is being offered by Orion International Corporation of Miami, Florida, in cooperaticn with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Neither the CPSC nor Orion International is aware of injuries associated with the rattle-style caps. Sold from November 1987 through October 5, 1988 as screw-an caps for Baby Cologne #30618, Baby Bath #30619, and Baby Set #30633, the ballshaped "rattle" caps came in colors of blue and pink, with a gold band around the diameter. Small beads inside the rattle generate noise. Approximately 22,248 pieces of the Baby Cologne, #30618, 1,104 pieces of the Baby Bath #30619, and 1,992 pieces of the Baby Set #30633 were sold in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Florida, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Washington, D.C. Consumers should not allow infants to use the rattle bottle caps of "Para Mi Bebe" soap and cologne. The caps should be removed. They can be exchanged at the store of purchase for nonrattle caps. U.S. Customs Service identified the hazardous rattle caps at the Part of Miami, Florida, as part of the "Operation Toyland" surveillance program conducted last year with CPSC.

June 13, 1989 Release # 89-054 American International Recalling Doll Because Of Potential Choking Hazard WASHINGTON, D.C. -- American International of Brooklyn, New York is voluntarily recalling a toy baby doll because removable arms and legs may pose a potential choking hazard to young children.The product being recalled is a baby doll about six inches in height packaged in a clear carrying case with a smaller doll and a bottle, Item No. 2065PVC. The arms on both dolls are moveable, but the arms on the smaller doll can also come off and may be hazardous.Approximately 960 of these dolls were sold in the New York City area during October 1988 through December 1988 for approximately $1.99 each.Neither the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission nor American International is aware of any injuries associated with these dolls.Consumers having these dolls should take them away from children and return them to the retailer where purchased for a full refund of the purchase price. Bultina Disposable Lighters Recalled By Paulshin International NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 10, 1988 Release # 88-94 Bultina Disposable Lighters Recalled By Paulshin International WASHINGTON - Paulshin International, Inc. of Chicago, Illinois is voluntarily recalling approximately 400,000 disposable lighters in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The lighter may flare-up unexpectedly or may fail to extinguish when the control level is released. The models involved are 700LT and 701LT and were imported since 1987. Laboratory testing found that some of the lighters may have been mis-assembled during manufacturing. There has been one reported serious burn injury associated with this product. These disposable 3-1/2 inches in length with transparent plastic bodies which are either red, green, clear, or yellow/orange in color. The silver colored metal windguards are labeled "Bultina" and Korea". The lighters were sold either loose or blister packed under the name Red-Match. Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the lighters and return them to the place of purchase for a refund. These dolls have arms which may be pulled off and present a choking hazard to young children. Neither CPSC nor Wang's International know of any injuries involving these craft dolls. Wang's International packaged these unclothed soft plastic dolls in clear plastic bags with labels. One doll is a 4 1/2-inch Cupid doll #PDT 3538. The other is a 5 1/2-inch doll #PDT631D, which has red hair, freckles and red painted-on shoes. The identification numbers only appear on the package labels and not on the dolls themselves. These craft dolls were sold through craft stores nationwide, retailing for approximately $1.00 each. July 14, 1988 Release # 88-051 Importer Recalls Water Toys; Toy Snake WASHINGTON, DC - Beachcombers International Inc. of Fort Myers, Florida is voluntarily recalling water toys and a squeaking toy snake because they may pose choking and lead poisoning hazards to young children. The imported toys recalled by Beachcombers International are: - "Big Mouth Fish, Hippo, and Frog," plastic wind-up water toys labeled "MASUDAYA 1976 Made in Hong Kong;" some 8,000 toys were sold nationally for about $2 each. - "Devil Fish," an eight-inch wind-up toy in the shape of a fish which was imported from Hong Kong and sold for $2 in New Jersey and Virginia. - "Lively Squeaking Snake," a plastic cobra snake some 21 inches long from China which sold nationally for $1. Consumers should immediately take the toys away from children and return them to the retail store for a refund of the purchase price. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said both water toys have small parts, which may present a choking hazard to young children; the toy snake contains an excessive amount of lead in the surface coating. The violations were discovered by U.S. Customs' agents and CPSC inspectors during routine import surveillance at the Port of Miami. Dry Suit AC Valve Recalled by DUI NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 20, 1988 Release # 88-042 DUI Dry Suit AC Valve Recalled WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Diving Unlimited International, Inc. (DUI) of San Diego, California is announcing a recall of its AC (air control) dry suit valve because the valve malfunctions. The DUI AC valve is used on SCUBA diving dry suits. The DUI AC valve deflates or inflates the diving dry suit to allow the diver to equalize air pressure while ascending or descending in the water by pressing on the valve. The AC valve differs from the standard 2-valve system commonly used in dry suits, where air intake and outflow are controlled by two separate valves. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is aware of incidents involving 16 divers which are associated with AC valve malfunction. The valve may free-flow causing air to fill the dry suit resulting in the diver rising rapidly to the surface or failing to provide sufficient air to maintain buoyancy. The possibility exists of serious injury and/or death, especially if appropriate emergency procedures are not followed. Owners of dry suits with AC valves attached should immediately stop using the dry suits. DUI asks that all divers return their suits (at DUI's expense) and have the AC valve replaced at no charge. All dry suits returned to DUI will be tested and DUI will fix any leaks in the suit (except for seals) at no additional charge. Further, if the diver wishes to upgrade the valve system, this will be done at the manufacturer's cost of the valves only. Circus America Playpens Modification by C&T International NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 23, 1988 Release # 88-030 Playpens to be Modified Because of Hazards to Children WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, C&T International, Inc., Moonachie, New Jersey, today announced it is voluntarily making available to consumers a free modification kit for its mesh-sided playpen with drop sides, model number 585, "Circus America." Some of the playpens fail to warn users of a potential suffocation hazard if an infant is left in the playpen with one of the sides down. All of the playpens present a finger crushing hazard at two locations in the drop side locking system. In addition, when the playpens are folded for storage, it is possible for a child to remove the plastic feet which may present a choking hazard. The Commission is aware of a number of deaths and injuries involving mesh-sided playpens with drop sides produced by firms other than C&T. Eleven infants are known to have died when left unattended in playpens with a drop side down. These children suffocated when they rolled into a mesh pocket created by the lowered drop side. The Commission is also aware of several incidents in which children's fingers were crushed when they attempted to climb into a playpen grasping the folded drop side locking system. The playpens involved in these incidents were not manufactured by C&T; however, some of the playpens sold by C&T are similar to the playpens involved in the incidents and present the same hazards. The affected collapsible mesh-sided playpens may be identified by a self-adhesive label on the floorboard which states: Art. 585, CIRCUS AMERICA EX. The playpens measure 39 by 39 by 33 inches and contain a removable foam floor pad. The product has four plastic rings about three inches in diameter on the inside which can be used by a child to pull up on. Four hinges made of plastic must be pushed up in order to fold the playpen. The product, which is imported from Italy, retails for about $89.99. The "Circus Polo" playpen model number 582 is not affected by this action. Approximately, 2,500 playpens have been distributed nationwide since November 1984. Although some of the playpens have the suffocation hazard warning label, all of the playpens present a finger crushing hazard in the folded drop side locking system and a choking hazard in the removable plastic feet. C&T International will provide a free modification kit to consumers who call l-800-537-1922. New Jersey residents call 201-896-2555. The kit contains a Safety Alert warning of the potential suffocation hazard, plastic inserts to prevent the possibility of finger crushing incidents in the folded drop side locking system, and replacement plastic feet which can not be removed by young children. Children should never be left in playpens with the drop sides down. Until owners receive and install the modification kit, the plastic feet should be removed and discarded.

LP Gas-Fired Cabinet Heaters Recalled by Valor NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 1, 1986 Release # 86-058 CPSC Warns of LP Gas-Fired Cabinet Heaters Dangers Washington, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Valor International Limited, an English manufacturer, is issuing a safety notice concerning approximately 3,000 LP gas-fired cabinet heaters which may create a potential fire and explosion hazard due to gas leakage. The heaters are "Cosy-Glo" Model 177 and "Valorette" Model 378. They were imported and sold by Valor America Heating, Inc., Ottsville, Pennsylvania, an independent U.S. firm that has gone out of business. The cabinet heaters were sold primarily in Iowa, Minnesota, Pennsyl vania and Wisconsin from 1980 to 1982 for approximately $250. The Commission is aware of 5 fire/explosion incidents involving the Cosy-Glo or Valorette heaters. In all 5 incidents property damage and/or injuries were reported. The heaters were designed to be used with a 20 pound LP gas cylinder stored inside the cabinet, although no LP gas cylinder was sold with the heater and all available LP gas cylinders are intended for outdoor use. Use of the heaters connected to an LP gas cylinder located indoors may create a potential fire and explosion hazard due to gas leakage at the connector valve or pressure regulator. In addition, an LP gas cylinder intended for use outdoors may vent gas into the environment due to the expansion of gas if it is over-filled. Consumers should discontinue use of the heater and contact 11 their local gas company for assistance in connecting the heater to an outside gas source. Approximately 8,000 of these toys were distributed by the firm from 1984 to 1986. This toy has previously been recalled by other companies who have marketed it. The toy has been imported by many firms and CPSC is involved in contacting each of these firms as quickly as they can be identified. CPSC has investigated accidents in which this toy has been responsible for serious eye injuries and facial lacerations not only to children but adults as well. The "Flying Copter", being recalled by Reeves International Inc., retailed for about $3.00 and is a 7 1/2 inch plastic flying toy helicopter with a hand launching device. The helicopter is mostly white with three red plastic rotor blades. The launching handle is green. Assembly is required before the toy can be flown. It is this assembly which is difficult and if done improperly could allow the rotor blades to come off and strike the user or bystander. Consumers are urged to discontinue use and to return the toy helicopter to the store where it was purchased for a full refund. Approximately 15,000 "Flying Copters" were distributed by the firm between March of 1984 and October 1985. This toy has previously been recalled by other companies who have marketed it. The toy has been imported by many firms and CPSC is involved in contacting each of these firms as quickly as they can be identified. CPSC has investigated accidents in which this toy has been responsible for serious eye injuries and facial lacerations not only to children but adults as well. Woodworks Lace Up Horses Recalled By Reeves International NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 24, 1986 Release # 86-21 Wooden Toy Horses Recalled Because Of Lead Poisoning Hazard WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Reeves International, Pequannock, New Jersey, today announced a voluntary recall of the Woodworks Lace Up Horse, item #203, because of the danger of lead poisoning to children. Since 1983, approximately 550 of these wooden toy horses have been sold for approximately $5.00 each through stores nationwide. The Woodworks Lace Up Horses were sampled and tested for lead in the paint by the State of Connecticut's Department of Consumer Protection as part of a cooperative program with CPSC. Testing indicated that the paint on these toys contained 6.8% lead. The Woodworks Lace Up Horses are banned by CPSC's Lead in Paint Requirement which limits the amount of lead in paint to 0.06%. Neither CPSC nor Reeves know of any injuries or deaths associated with this product. The Woodworks Lace Up Horses, Item #203, is a wood horse painted green with a red shoelace laced through the holes. The wooden horse measures approximately 5½" by 4" and is sold attached to a blister package labeled in part "High gloss lacquer finish; non-toxic paint, Made in Taiwan." Consumers should stop using the Woodworks Lace Up Horse and discard it or return it to the retailer where purchased for a full refund. Retailers should remove the Woodworks Lace Up Horses from sale immediately and return them to Reeves International Inc., 14 Industrial Road, Pequannock, New Jersey 07440. Sweatshirts Recalled by TMR International NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 19, 1986 Release # 86-17 Sweatshirts Recalled Because Of Possible Choking Hazard Washington, DC -- In cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and the New York Attorney General's office, TMR International, Ltd. (TMR) of New York, NY today announced a voluntary recall of its Young Rascals "American Dream," "Bomber" and "Ship" sweatshirts because of a potential choking hazard presented by LED lights and button-size batteries on a removable velcro strip. When these sweatshirts were tested for compliance with CPSC safety requirements, the LED lights and disc-battery components separated from the velcro strip. The involved "American Dream," "Bomber" and "Ship" sweatshirts subject to this recall program are limited to sizes 2, 3 and 4 (Toddler). TMR imported approximately 2,400 units of these sweatshirts from Taiwan and distributed them nationwide between 9/15/85 and 11/15/85. The sweatshirts were sold for approximately $15.00 each. TMR doe not want garments that may be dangerous to be used. Consumers should stop using these sweatshirts immediately. Consumers have the option of returning the sweatshirts to TMR for a full refund or to return the velcro strip and keep the sweatshirt for a partial refund of $5.00. Stuffed Teddy Bear Toys Recalled by Far East International NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 27, 1981 Release # 81-009 Stuffed Teddy Bear Toy Animals Recalled To Eliminate Safety Hazards WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 27) -- An estimated 23,000 children's stuffed teddy bears distributed nationwide by a New York importer are being recalled by the importer in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission because the toys may present safety hazards which could injure young children. Testing of the toy animals by CPSC showed that a substantial percentage of the noses and eyes of the teddy bears could be pulled off easily, thus posing a potential choking hazard. The tests, simulating normal use and abuse of the toys by a young child, were performed on a random sample of the teddy bears; they have been determined to be "banned hazardous substances" under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. The teddy bears were manufactured in Korea and distributed nationwide to toy stores by Far East International, Inc., of New York City. Product code tags on the potentially hazardous toys are numbered 202-50, 202-94, 202-95 or 202-219. Another label sewn to the leg of each teddy bear reads "Sunkyung Limited. Made in Korea." Consumers are being urged to mail their children's teddy bears directly to Far East International at 1182 Broadway, Room 901, New York, New York, 10001. The company will provide full refunds or another toy animal of comparable value and will reimburse consumers for mailing costs. The importer also will alert each of its retail customers to the safety hazards and to the procedures to be followed in carrying out the recall. The company has stopped making further shipments of these teddy bears.

Hair Dryers Repaired by Andis & National Presto NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 22, 1980 Release # 80-016 Additional Hair Dryers Made With Asbestos To Be Repaired By Their Two Manufacturers WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 22, 1980) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today announced the recall of more than one-half million hair dryers and styling combs which were manufactured with asbestos. The recall includes professional hand-held hair dryers sold for use in barber shops and hair salons. The recalls are being conducted voluntarily by the Andis Company, of Racine, Wisconsin, and by National Presto Industries, Inc., of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Under voluntary corrective programs approved by the Commission, the two firms have agreed to replace the asbestos linings in the dryers and stylers with non-asbestos materials. The Andis Company is recalling tens of thousands of hand-held dryers sold to professional barbers and beauticians since 1973. Some salons may have resold the dryers directly to consumers, CPSC staff reports. The recall applies to the following Andis hair dryer styles and models: Electra Dryer, model ED, Electra Dryer 11, model ED2; Ultra 1200, model U-12; Elite 1500, model 480-EL; and Elite 1250, model E-12. Professional hair stylists should return these dryers to the supply distributor where purchased for free repairs. Consumers who own one of the dryers can obtain the location of the nearest repair center by contacting Andis at its toll-free number l-800-558-9441. Hundreds of thousands of bonnet and hood-type hair dryers and styling combs are being recalled by National Presto Industries. These hair products were sold to consumers as early as 1965 through a variety of independent retail stores nationwide. The following Presto brand dryers and stylers are eligible for free repairs: Elastic Bonnet, models LP04 and PPlOA; Professional Hood, model PP18A; Mist Hood, models PP19A and PP19B; Styling Comb, model PP24A; and Mist Styling Comb, model PP25A. Consumers should mail the dryers and stylers for free repairs to National Presto Industries, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 54701.
